Different Types of Art

with a short description of each

1. Painting

Ernest Concepcion’s “OMG Christ”

Painting is a method of expressing your artistic vision through the use of

paint as the primary medium. A painter is an artist who works primarily in this
medium and creates art by applying different colored paints to a solid surface,
usually a canvas, to create a work of art. Paints are typically oil, acrylic, or
watercolor, but pigments, dyes, and inks, as well as other materials, can be
used. Painting is one of the oldest forms of art, dating back to prehistoric cave
paintings.

2. Sculpture

Napoleon Abueva’s “Sandugo (Blood Compact)”

The sculpture is another ancient form of visual art that dates back to
prehistoric times. The sculpture is the creation of three-dimensional visual
images using materials such as clay, stone, ceramics, metals, or wood. Modern
sculptors can use almost any object to make a sculpture, including metals,
plastics, glass, or found objects while Contemporary sculptors can also use a
wider range of techniques, such as welding, carving, assembling, or modeling.
Sculptures were usually commissioned by kings or religious and political leaders
and displayed in public spaces, usually as symbols of wealth, power, religion, or
politics. Many ancient cities, including Athens, Jerusalem, Istanbul, and Rome,
have impressive public sculpture collections.

3. Literature

Bob Ong’s “ABNKKBSNPLAKo?!”

Literature is an art form that shares stories. It is an art form of language

and can be read or spoken. Poetry, essays, plays, biographies, fiction, non-
fiction, satires, and other written works are all considered literature. Writers
make art with literature by arranging words in a pleasing order, and while
reading is delightful, those words are frequently social criticisms. Many of
the famous authors used language and the written word to criticize or express an
opinion on society such as the “Stupid Is Forever” of late-Senator Miriam
Defensor-Santiago.

4. Architecture
Populous’ “Philippine Arena” which is the world’s largest indoor arena

Architecture is an art form that you see every day without understanding
it or enjoying it completely. Architecture is the art of building structures, and it
can be traced back to when man first built a shelter. Architecture provides a
practical purpose, but it also represents man's ambition to construct significant
buildings throughout history. Architecture is both a practical need and a work of
art, and it is accessible to the public as sculpture.

5. Music

Ryan Cayabyab as National Artist for Music.

Music is the art of blending melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre to

create a musical composition from audible sounds and vibrations. The human
voice, instruments, or both can be used in music. When the sounds created by
the vocal cords and numerous instruments are mixed, the beauty of emotion
may be expressed. Before the creation of speech, vocal sounds are thought to
have played an important part in human communication. Our forefathers made
musical instruments out of wood, bones, stones, and other natural elements,
according to archaeological data. Music is divided into genres and styles, and
there are far too many to mention. Classical through gospel, rock, pop, hip-hop,
rap, electronic, blues, country, reggae, indie, trap, reggaeton, folk, metal, punk,
soul, funk, techno, and more are all popular music genres.

6. Theater

Lea Salonga and Jett Pangan in their “Sweeney Todd” musical theater.

The theater is a type of art in which the artist incorporates both visual and
dramatic elements. The concept of theatre has evolved throughout time to
encompass performance art. It often encompasses a variety of art genres in
which the artists show their work on a stage. Since then, the theater has grown
in popularity as a popular form of entertainment. Theater and dance, music,
opera, circus arts, musicals, magic or illusion, mime, spoken word, puppets, and
performance art are all examples of the performing arts. Theater frequently
includes the other seven forms of art into its entire package, with aspects such
as music, stage design, and literature being incorporated in theater productions.
Costume creation and other ornamental arts also contribute to the whole
experience.

7. Cinema and Film

“Ang Pangarap Kong Holdap” (My Dream Robbery) is a 2018 Philippine comedy
heist film.

Cinema is the newest form is among art genres. It was created a little
over a century ago, but it improved after many years have passed, and it may
not have been as long as the history of the other art forms, but it has fast grown
in popularity. Movies are a two-dimensional representation of a three-
dimensional reality, an art form that involves both our hearing and visual senses.
Movies, like literature, convey a story through a combination of spoken word,
visual art, and other elements. Special effects, animation, makeup, costumes,
screenplay, scene design, soundtrack, acting, directing, and other aspects of the
film industry employ well-skilled artisans. Even though cinematic art creation
needs a large number of trained artisans, the master artist is frequently referred
to as the film director. Lavrente Diaz, Brillante Mendoza, Erik Matti, and Chito S.
Rono are some of the most well-known directors in the Philippines.
