What is it/Discussion of the Topic

When a man decides to build a house, does not he draws first the blue print
before he will start to do the work? Same with the conduct of research, the blueprint for
the collection, measurement, and data analysis is drawn as a pattern to follow.
Furthermore, research designs enable the researcher to obtain a more valid more valid,
objective, reliable, and accurate answers to the research questions.

Research design is defined as the logical and coherent overall strategy that the
researcher uses to integrate all the components of the research study (Barrot, 2017, p
102). In order to find meaning in the overall process of doing your research study, a
step-by-step process will be helpful to you.

Types of Quantitative Research Design

• Descriptive - Is utilized to accurately portray a population that has been chosen. Also
used to describe the extent or direction of attitudes and behaviors. In some books,
descriptive may be classified into descriptive-survey, descriptive-correlational,
descriptive-comparative

• Correlational - Used to investigate the direction and magnitude of relationships among

variables in a population.

• Ex Post Facto - If the objective of the study is to measure a cause from a pre-existing
effects, then Ex Post Facto research design is more appropriate to use.

• True Experimental - True experiment exists if there is manipulation of experimental

variables/or the treatment of the study, divides the two participants into control and
experimental groups and participants were randomly selected.

• Quasi Experimental - A design which either has no control groups or the participants
are not randomly selected

One needs to choose a specific design appropriate for such study. Here is a
concept map that will guide you in identifying the specific research design of the study
based on purpose.

Data Gathering Instruments

Quantitative:

Questionnaire: Allows us to collect the most complete and accurate data in a logical flow.

Interview: Conversation with a purpose (Interview Types: Structured interview, Semi-

structured interview, In-depth interview and focused group discussion)

Surveys: List of closed or multiple choice questions that is distributed to a sample

(online, in person, or over the phone).

Experiments: Situation in which variables are controlled and manipulated to establish

cause-and-effect relationships.

Observations: Observing subjects in a natural environment where variables can’t be

controlled.

Qualitative:

Interviews: explores individual experiences perspective or practices in rich detail

Observation: learns about behaviours in natural setting; learns about cultural aspect of
setting context.

Focus Group Discussion: generates insights into shared experiences and social norms
through group discussion.

Textual data: various data collection such as surveys, stories, diaries, documents.
