Research design is defined as the logical and coherent overall strategy that the
researcher uses to integrate all the components of the research study (Barrot, 2017, p
102). In order to find meaning in the overall process of doing your research study, a
step-by-step process will be helpful to you.
• Descriptive - Is utilized to accurately portray a population that has been chosen. Also
used to describe the extent or direction of attitudes and behaviors. In some books,
descriptive may be classified into descriptive-survey, descriptive-correlational,
descriptive-comparative
• Ex Post Facto - If the objective of the study is to measure a cause from a pre-existing
effects, then Ex Post Facto research design is more appropriate to use.
• Quasi Experimental - A design which either has no control groups or the participants
are not randomly selected
One needs to choose a specific design appropriate for such study. Here is a
concept map that will guide you in identifying the specific research design of the study
based on purpose.
Quantitative:
Questionnaire: Allows us to collect the most complete and accurate data in a logical flow.
Qualitative:
Observation: learns about behaviours in natural setting; learns about cultural aspect of
setting context.
Focus Group Discussion: generates insights into shared experiences and social norms
through group discussion.
Textual data: various data collection such as surveys, stories, diaries, documents.
B. Directions: List three (3) commonly used data gathering instruments. Then describe
each briefly. Write your answer on the space provided.
