Assignment 1 (15%)
Design a gravity flow sanitary sewer system for the residential district shown in figure 1
below. The future average saturation population density is estimated to be 40 persons/ha.
The average flow rate of residential wastewater is estimated to be 300 L/c/ d. Use figure 2 to
estimate the peak wastewater flow. Use curve B of Figure 3 to estimate the maximum rate
of groundwater infiltration.

The minimum size of sewer pipe is 200 mm (8 in). The wall thickness of the 200-mm pipe is
20 mm (0.8 in). The minimum velocity of flow in the sewer when full is 0.6 m/s. A value of
0.75 m/s is more desirable if it can be achieved without unnecessary cost. Use Manning's
equation with an n value of 0.013 to determine the capacity of the sewers. Because the
homes in this area have basements, the minimum depth below the street surface to the top
of the sewers is 2.75 m. In areas where basements are not usually constructed, the depth of
cover to the top of the sewer may be less. To simplify the hydraulic design computation, you
can use the Nomogram on figure 4.

The numbers given in figure 1 are ground elevation in meters.
