DIRECTIONS: Determine whether the following statements or situations use

inductive or deductive reasoning and explain why. (2 POINTS EACH)

1. I have had spicy food for breakfast and lunch this day. All the dishes in
this town are spicy indeed.
Answer: Inductive Reasoning
The statement is inductive because of the specific details given in the statement;
we can see that there is a connection between the first and second sentences
which helped generalize the entire idea of the statement. This statement leads to
a conclusion. In the first sentence, they stated that "I had spicy food for breakfast
and lunch this day.'' It's specific as they said what food they ate for breakfast and
lunch exactly tasted like; in the second sentence, "All the dishes in this town are
spicy indeed." We can tell that it is a generalized statement, as they had already
concluded that "all" the dishes in that town are "indeed" spicy, without even
tasting all the dishes in there to make such a strong conclusion. As quoted in the
previous sentence, the word "all" generalized the subject and the word "indeed"
made the statement strong. The sentence begins with a specific idea, then it
changes to a generalized idea in the second part.

2. All snicker bars have nuts. I am allergic to nuts. Therefore, I should not
eat snicker bars.
Answer: Deductive Reasoning

This is a deductive kind of reasoning. We can read that, before they came to the
specific conclusion that they shouldn't eat snicker bars, they started with a
general idea first which is, "All snicker bars have nuts." then to a known fact
that, "I am allergic to nuts" in the second part. Finally, they concluded that, since
snicker bars have nuts and they are allergic to nuts; "They shouldn't eat snicker
bars." Deductive reasoning starts with a general idea to a more specific one.
These statements show it all. We could see the connection in between those
statements. Hence, the premises are true, so the conclusion is too.

3. For the past three Fridays, a 3-D movie has come out in theaters.
Joshua concluded that this Friday, a 3-D movie will come out in the
theaters.
Answer: Inductive Reasoning

According to the material that I’ve read: "Inductive reasoning involves drawing
conclusions and using logic; it involves widening specific premises.". It is where
the premises are used to form a conclusion. The statement started in an
observation, and ended with a conclusion. As from what Joshua observed these
past three Fridays, 3-D movies have come out in theaters. Joshua used that
observation as basis to conclude that this coming Friday a 3-D movie will come
out in the theaters. His conclusion might not be certain, but it's probable–might be
right or wrong. Therefore, we are certain that it's an Inductive Reasoning.
4. All cookies are made with sugar. Oreo is a cookie, so I know that
Oreo is “made with sugar.
Answer: Deductive Reasoning

This statement is a deductive reasoning, because it begins with an assumption; it

progresses from a broad idea to a specific one. In the first statement, "all" cookies
are generalized to be made with sugar. And then, it's specified to the fact that
Oreo is a cookie. Therefore, they conclude that Oreo is also made with sugar. We
can see the connection there that supports each statement, however since the first
statement that "All cookies are made with sugar.", is false; the conclusion about,
"Oreo is made with sugar too.", is false as well. Even if all the cookies are made
with sugar, it doesn’t mean that oreo is also made with sugar. Some brands make
cookies that are sugar-free, like Oreo.

5. Our school has a family meeting on Friday. Tomorrow is Friday.

Answer: Deductive Reasoning

This is deductive reasoning, because of its logical approach; where you proceed
from general ideas to specific conclusions. The premise: "Our school has a family
meeting on Friday'' is true, then the next premise: "Tomorrow is Friday." is true.
Using these premises we could conclude that Tomorrow is their school's family
meeting, because tomorrow is Friday. These statements are deductive since they
employ logic and observation to prove the conclusion. It also uses facts or
definitions to reach a logical conclusion.
