Activity No. 5
Monohybrid Cross: Complete Dominance
Problems:

1. In peas, green seed color is dominant to white. In the following experiments, parents with known
phenotypes produced the listed progeny:

Parents Progeny Genotype

Green White
a. Green x white 82 78 Gg x gg
b. Green x green 118 39 Gg x Gg
c. White x white 0 50 gg x gg
d. Green x white 74 0 GG x gg
e. Green x green 90 0 GG x GG

Using the letter G for the green gene and g for white, give the most probable genotype of each
parent.

2. A downward pointed frontal hairline (widow’s peak) in human beings is a heritable trait. A person
with widow’s peak always has at least one parent who also has this trait, whereas with a straight
frontal hairline may occur in families in which one or even both parents have widow’s peak. When
both parents have a straight frontal hairline, all children also have a straight hairline. Using W and w
to symbolize genes for this trait, what is the genotype of an individual without widow’s peak?

If our dominant trait is straight frontal hairline and our recessive trait is downward pointed
frontal hairline or with widow’s peak then,
W – Dominant (Straight frontal hairline)
w – Recessive (Downward pointed frontal hairline).
The genotype of an individual without window’s peak would either be WW or Ww.

3. Some individuals have whorl of hair on the back of the head, whereas others have two. In the
following pedigree shaded shapes represent one whorl, unshaded shapes two:

Using the first letter of the alphabet, give the probable genotype of the following:

a. F1 5 F110 P2 P4 F213 F2 15
b. What should be the phenotypic ratio of the progeny produced by the marriage of F18 x F1 9 ,
assuming a large family?
Answers:
a. F1 5 = aa
F110 = aa
P2 = aa
P4 = Aa
F213 = aa
F2 15 = Aa
b. 2:2
