Research Topic
An Investigation into the high turnover rate of bottled water at the CTS Canteen.
Objectives
Analyse two possible factors in the demand for water at CTS during the period
Determine if the storage capacity at CTS during the first school term of the 2018-2019
school year was sufficient to hold the average amount of water needed per student.
Explain two pricing mechanisms used at CTS in the pricing of water throughout the first
term.
Determine and discuss the preferred and most economical brands of water sold at CTS

Background/ Overview
Chippy’s Tutoring Service (C.T.S) is a private school that was established in the
September of 2009 by Mr. Damion Chippy. The institution provides both day school and extra
lessons during the week and on weekends. The Day School comprises of students who have
difficulties fitting into the traditional public-school system. While the Extra Lessons deals with
students who need help preparing for various CSEC Examinations, across the Kingston and St.
A variety of beverages are sold at the canteen, however, bottled water is one of, if not,
the, major drink beverage(s) sold. In this study we will be examining the high turn over rate of
water, which is essentially the ratio of the amount of water that had to be replaced during the
given time period, to the average amount of water, in the C.T.S canteen. The goal of seeking to
undertake this investigation was due to the noticeably high volume of empty water bottles in the
garbage and throughout the premises left by students at the end of the classes
This research will therefore help the proprietor to make critical decisions in order to save
money, such as whether or not to expand on storage space and/ or to increase the size of the
transport vehicle , buy more water in bulk at one time and/ or to make decisions as to what brand

Methodology.
Our research utilizes data mainly from primary sources, these being; interviews with the
proprietors of C.T.S, to understand and relate information to the way in which the canteen’s
water sales are managed; observations of the habits of the students as it pertains to the
consumption of water; and a Questionnaire which was used to collect data, from the students of
C.T.S, specific to this research which was suitable because it was aimed at the students who
mainly purchase water at C.T.S, which primarily contributes to the high turn-over rate of water.
We also drew up a separate series of appropriate questions to ask Mr. Chippy (The primary
proprietor) and Ms. Mac (The Administrator) in relation to how often bottled water is
replenished in the canteen. Both were interviewed separately, and their responses were recorded
and analyzed on paper.
The results from the questionnaire and the calculations that follow will help to determine the
factors responsible for the rapid depletion of water in the C.T.S canteen
In conclusion the research was both qualitative, measurable and quantifiable in the sense that
accurate statistics were used and all sources were found appropriate for this research, however
we did have one limitation as it pertains to the number of students that took the survey because
some were not available and/ or willing to participate in the survey

Presentation And Analysis Of Data
For our data collection, 40 students were issued questionnaires, and these were the results
obtained:
18; 45%
22; 55%
55%, or 22, of the students selected the Health Reasons option and the remaining 45%, or 18
students selected Availability.
Int the interview we conducted with Mr. Chippy and Ms. Mac we were told the storage area
reserved for the cases of water was a 3x3 square foot section of the 10x10 square foot kitchen
which would have multiple cases of water stacked on top of each other.
The average number of cases stored here at a given time according to the interview answers is 5
cases at the start of each week. The average amount needed per week to accommodate 40
students is:

Interview Results
Affordability- According to Mr. Chippy, the students who attend C.T.S come from a range of
various demographic backgrounds, while taking this into consideration water is priced to allow
for students from each end of the spectrum to afford water given their fixed weekly school
allowances.
Profitability- The main goal of any entity is to make a profit in order to continue to operate. At
the current price of water Mr. Chippy makes approximately $63.33, giving him a total profit of
$3039.84 from each case of water sold. Through this further expansion is allowed.

Conclusion
Based on our findings it is evident that out of the forty students the two main factors influencing
the demand for water were its health benefits, which was the option chosen by 55%, or 22, of the
students and its availability, which was the option selected by the remaining 45%, or 18.
We also found evidence that the storage capacity of C.T.S is insufficient compared to the
approximate demand for water which is 9.33 cases a week versus a limit of 5 cases that can be
The pricing mechanisms used are based off of profitability and affordability
Recommendations
-Increasing storage space to lessen to cost of transporting the water from the store to CTS.
- Obtaining a recycling bin, in order to lessen to amount of plastic on/around the compound and
