CHAPTER III: Research Methodology

Research design

In this study, the researcher will use quantitative research,

making use of the previously discussed quantitative methodology.

Research is a critical, careful, scholarly, positive, organized and

systematic inquiry of factor answers to questions and solutions to the

problem. Quantitative research design is aimed at discovering how

many people think, act or feel in a specific way. Quantitative research

concerns the quantifying of relationships that exist between

variables. In the case of descriptive quantitative research, no

changes are made to behaviors or conditions; research is conducted

to examine variables as they exist (Hopkins, 2000; Wiersma, 1991).

Creswell (2002) noted that quantitative research is the process of

collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and writing the results of a study,

while qualitative research is the approach to data collection, analysis,

and report writing differing from the traditional, quantitative

approaches.

The main goal of this research is to know the effectiveness of

the development of vertical hydroponic gardening and organic

nutrient solution in Angono National High School. Observation will be

conducted by the researchers to identify the technique utilized in

quantitative research.

Setting of the Study

The investigation will be carried out within the premises of

Angono National High School, a prominent educational institution

nestled along Lt. Col. Aguinaldo Street, within Barangay Kalayaan in

Angono, Rizal. Spanning an extensive land area of 36,000 square

meters, the school embodies a thriving educational environment.

The focal point of this research was the utilization of the school's

dedicated garden area, known as “Gulayan sa Paaralan”,

strategically positioned adjacent to the cookery building. This choice

serves as an ideal setting to implement and evaluate the efficacy of

Hydroponic Gardening Techniques applied to recently cultivated

crops.

The study aims not only to apply innovative Hydroponic

Gardening Techniques but also to examine the effects of organic

nutrient solutions on the growth and development of these crops. The

selection of diverse organic solutions seeks to assess their impact

on plant health and overall yield. The researchers will make an effort
to compile full information on the performance of these solutions by

carefully recording the procedure and monitoring the crops' reaction

to the nutrient solution. This data collection process is intended to

provide valuable insights into optimizing plant growth and fostering

sustainable agricultural practices within educational settings.

Subject of the Study

The survey will be conducted by the researcher themselves.

The researchers will use a specific criterion to know if the

questionnaire was qualified to provide information needed to achieve

the objectives of the study.

The sampling method that will be used is purposive sampling,

wherein the staff personnel and teacher participants of Angono

National High School will be selected based on their expertise in

vertical hydroponic gardening and in using organic liquid solutions.

Because of the difference in their levels of expertise, purposive

sampling was chosen to help the researchers obtain trustworthy data

from individuals with varying levels of expertise with organic and

vertical hydroponic solutions. The researchers will guarantee the

confidentiality of the responses they will provide on the questionnaire

checklist.
Procedure of the Study

Vertical Post using a 6-liter Plastic Bottles

To create a hand-crafted vertical garden, first assemble

three 6-liter plastic bottles into a vertical pole. Next, use a soldering

iron to make sixteen holes in the post at regular intervals. Use the

bottom of a bottled water container to create a sprinkler for the top

of the post by poking holes on either side with a soldering iron.

Then, make a pot out of sand and cement combined with any

excess cloth, and allow it to set for two days. Take a 25-inch length

of PVC pipe and cut it in half. Connect the two halves with a tee

pipe and place a hose underneath. Create a planting container by

cutting a slit in a Styrofoam cup and filling it with coco fiber.

Organic Liquid Fertilizer

The first step in making a natural fertilizer is to gather

eggshells and banana peels. Sun-dry the eggshells for a day before

crushing 800 grams of them. Next, weigh one kilogram of banana

peels and cut them into little pieces. Put the crushed eggshells and

diced banana peels in a 3-liter container of water, cover it, and let it

sit for two days. After this time, filter the mixture to separate and

extract the nutrient-rich water, which may be used to fertilize plants.

Instrumentation of the Study

Questionnaire checklist made by the researchers will be used

to gather numerical data from the answers of the respondents about

the Developed Vertical Hydroponics. The researchers will ask the

assistance of research experts in validating and modifying the survey

checklist to become aligned with their research.

The checklist is composed of two parts that aims to answer

the acceptability and effectiveness of the developed product. The

first part of the checklist focused on the product’s appearance,

materials, and cost, while the second part is all about the growth rate

and sustainability of the product.

Statistical Treatment

In order to systematically interpret the data that will be

gathered from the study, the following statistical tools will be used.

The researchers will use the percentage distribution, weighted

mean, rank, and age, sex, occupation of the respondents in

determining their demographic profile.

The researchers will employ descriptive statistics in order to

determine the acceptability of the Vertical Hydroponic and Organic

Fertilizer.

To be able to determine the significant relationship between

the perception of the respondents about the Vertical Hydroponics

and Organic Fertilizer, t-test will be used.

The formula that will be applied are:

Percentage Difference:

(P) = F x 100

Where:

P = Percentage

F = Frequency

N = Total number of respondents

Weighted Mean:

WM = TWF/N

Where:

WM = Weighted Mean

WF = Weighted Frequency

N = Total number of respondents

Ethical Considerations

In conducting the research, the researchers will consider the

ethical dilemmas that they will encounter. It is the researcher's

responsibility to consider the respondents' rights and values as they

will be using a questionnaire checklist to collect data. Hence, the

succeeding ethical considerations that need to be followed are:

a. To conduct the study, the researchers will get permission from

the principal of the school and research experts.

b. Before collecting the necessary data, the researchers will

provide the respondents with an explanation of their goals in a

consent letter that will be signed by the research adviser.

c. The researchers will guarantee through the letter of consent

that the participant’s identity and response will be treated with utmost

confidentiality.
