I. CONCEPTS TO BE LEARNED

The variable is the central idea of a quantitative research. It measures attributes or characteristics that can vary
for different cases. Variables serves as basis for collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing and interpreting
data in a quantitative research.

KINDS OF VARIABLES

Independent variable or change variable Dependent variable or outcome variable

The independent variable is the cause. Its value is The dependent variable is the effect. Its value
independent of other variables in your study. depends on changes in the independent variable.

USES OF VARIABLES IN A QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

A. CLASSIFYING
Through variables, we describe the phenomenon or population we are studying. By classifying your data,
you are providing all necessary details that maybe critical to your argument and study.

B. MEASURING
Variables allows us to measure the frequency, magnitude, and impact among others of a particular subject
or concept.

C. EXPLAINING
Variables allow one to identify the meaning, purpose, and use of social phenomena. By identifying
particular variables and choosing appropriate indicators, you can explain particular phenomenon.

D. ASSESING RELATIONSHIP
Quantitative research test theories through assessing the relationships between variables. Variables are
critical elements of a relationship between subject and phenomenon you are investigating. Through
hypothesis testing, we can examine which variables are related to which and how these are related to one
another.
