SHORT BACKGROUND/HISTORY OF AN ATOM
Around 450 B.C., the Greek philosopher
Democritus introduced the idea of the atom.
He proposed the Greek word atomos,
which means uncuttable.

However, the idea was essentially forgotten for more than

2000 years.

In 1800, John Dalton re-introduced the atom. He provided

evidence for atoms and developed atomic theory.
The idea that everything is made of atoms was
pioneered by John Dalton (1766-1844) in a book
he published in 1808.

MINERAL RESOURCES in Davao de Oro https://nro11.neda.gov.ph/davao-region/davao-de-oro/

The province has rich deposits of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources.

Metallic resources include gold, silver, copper and iron among others with both large and
small-scale mining operations present.

Total revenues of (Php) 98,495,748.55 million pesos was generated from these mineral
resources as of 2015. Small-scale mining is more on gold and silver extraction and or
exploration.

Due to the huge reserves of gold in its municipalities, the Mines and GeoSciences Bureau
(MGB) declared Davao de Oro Province as the Gold District in the Davao Region.

Mining comes second to agriculture that has substantial contribution to the economy of the
province.

https://www.apexmines.com/home/our-business/maco-gold-mine/

Apex Mining Co., Inc. (AMCI) is a proudly Philippine-owned company, run by

Filipinos, with origins in the Maco Gold Mine in Davao de Oro, Province of
Mindanao in the Southern Philippines.

Maco Gold Mine was formerly known as Masara, situated in the municipalities of
Maco and Mabini, but the name change was effected in recognition of the entire
municipality where mining occurs, rather than one particular village near the mine
site.

Its original inhabitants came from several ethnic tribes such as the Mansaka,
Mandaya, Manobo, Mangguangan, Dibabawaon, Aeta, Kamayo, Davaweño and
Kalagan.

Gold discovery and mining rush[edit]

In September 1983, gold was discovered by a Lumad in the creeks of Mount Diwata, leading to gold rush causing the
population to rise rapidly to 125,000, who were mostly miners living in shanties along the 2 km logging road where the gold
mine valcanoic veins are located.

Mount Diwata, also locally unofficially nicknamed Diwalwal, is a remote 1,261-metre (4,137 ft) high range of
volcanic mountain and biodiversity area in Davao Region on eastern part of Mindanao island of Philippines.[2] Rich in gold
and copper ores and mines, it is spread across the 3 municipalities: (a) Monkayo in the province of Davao de Oro; as well
as (b) Cateel and (c) Boston in the province of Davao Oriental.[3][4][1] Laguna Copperplate Inscription, the oldest written
document in Philippines dated to 900 CE,[5] refers to Mount Diwata.

Environmental concerns[edit]
Illegal and unsafe mining practices have resulted in pollution of water, mercury poisoning, silting of Noboc river, deaths of human,
[18][3][7]
destruction of flora and fauna. Thousands of miner, including children, are at risk of air and water pollution and mercury
poisoning.[9]
