Experiment 1: Transformers

I. Objectives
1. Use a power Multisim to measure AC voltage, current, and power.
2. Understand transformer principles, connections, polarity, and power efficiency.
3. Make measurements using single-phase transformer and observe the output of the
transformer and analyze.
II. Materials:
Laptop/desktop
Multisim
Other related simulator software
III. Discussion
An electrical transformer is a passive electromagnetic element that is used to convert AC
voltages from one level to another. As a passive element, the output power is equal to or
less than the input power, so a transformer that steps-up the voltage will necessarily step
down the current, and vice versa. The efficiency of the transformer is the ratio of the
output power to the input power.

IV. Procedure
1. Draw the circuit using Multisim and simulate.
2. The circuit will have a transformer with a 110V primary and a 25V secondary. The
primary side will voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter. The secondary will have another
voltmeter, ammeter and wattmeter and a variable resistive load. WITH THE POWER
OFF, carefully examine the circuit and draw a complete schematic diagram of the
devices and the cables, including the power wattmeter connections. Tabulate you
results, and;

3. Examine the labeling on the transformer. What are the current designations on the
primary (110V) and the secondary (25V) sides?
Primary (high voltage side) rating for current: Iprimary = _____
Secondary (low voltage side) rating for current: Isecondary = ______
4. Graph your result using excel.
V. Observation
The activity shows the transformer principles, connections, polarity, and power efficiency. And according
to the data or gathered measurements voltages Vin and Vout are constant, Current in primary and
secondary are constant if they have load.
VI. Conclusion
I conclude that using this multisim makes it easier to check if the connections is right.
