Fundamentals of Martial Arts

TOPIC 3: INTRODUCTION OF KARATE and BASIC TRAINING

A. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the topic you should be able to:
1. sustain interest in karate as a sport and self defense
2. demonstrate the techniques correctly.

B. LECTURE:
1. ACTUAL BASIC TRAINING
A) Flexibility Training
1. Review all exercises in Topic 2 (10 times each side)
2. Floor exercises;
A) Feet together forward bend (10 times)
B) Feet apart forward bend (10 times each side)
C) Feet apart side bend (10 times each side)
D) Close feet toes point back (20 counts)
E) Close feet toes point outside (20 counts)

B) Introduction of new Basic Techniques;


NOTE: In forward stance position always observed the proper distribution of body weight which is 70% at the
Front leg and 30% at the back leg.

1. Inside block and Outside block – a technique used to protect the body level.
2. Downward block in forward stance position. (10 times each side)
3. Hip Twisting / Rotation – exercise between the thigh bone and the hip level. (10 times each side)
4. Reverse punch – is a strike out of a close fist hand. (10 times each side)
DIRECTION: Punch with the right hand, left leg at the front position.
Punch with the left hand, right leg at the front position.
5. Front kick snap in forward stance position. (10 times each side)
DIRECTION: After executing a kick, always pull back the kicking leg before dropping to the floor/ground.
6. Side Stomping kick in forward stance position, knee level (10 times each side)
7. Crescent kick – is a strike out of the face of the foot, it can be used in striking or blocking.
8. Straddle or Horse Riding stance – each leg carries 50% of body weight.
9. Cat stance – the front leg carries 15% body weight and back leg carries 85%.
10. Jab punch – is a strike out of closed fist hand particular target is face level.
