Introduction
My Classroom Management Portfolio captures so many
aspects that I will incorporate into my classroom. Many
ideas come from what I’ve experienced as a student and
an observer. I wish to include procedures, expectations, and
activities that make my feel students feel respected, loved,
and most importantly, safe. I want my students to know that
they are welcome to completely be themselves and that I
am there to support them and guide them to a successful
future. I built this plan around the idea of my fifth-grade
general classroom. I know some fifth graders tend to switch
classes; however, I didn’t plan for a switch class in my
specific class. Regardless, this plan can easily be altered to
benefit any type of student at any school. I know as my
experience grows and improves, so will this plan, but as of
now I am very excited for what I have created and to be
able to use this when building my future classroom.

3
Philosophical Statement
My philosophy of education incorporates what I’ve learned in my
education classes so far into the core fundamentals I was raised
around. My family always placed a significant importance around
respect. Some people just demand they should be respected
because of the position they old or because of their age, I strongly
disagree with this idea. The only way to receive respect is to give it,
and I plan to show my students respect and trust from the first
moment they walk into the classroom. I want them to know that yes,
I am the teacher and have the ultimate say in things. However, I
never want to have to use that type of authority. I want to work with
my students in order to ensure that my classroom is always a safe
space for them to express themselves freely. I think children will be
able to learn easier in a space where they know they are loved and
that their education and success is the number one priority. My
students will understand that an assessment is not just to fail them
and make them feel worthless, but for them and myself to observe
how much they have been able to achieve and learn in my
classroom. They will know and understand that everything we do in
class is to build them up and make them stronger for their futures.

Dancing Name Game
The purpose of this game is to serve as a fun icebreaker to help the
students learn each other’s names as well as help the teacher to
learn their students’ names. Correlating a dance move with a
specific person’s name will help with memorizing other people’s
names. It’s meant to get challenging the further you go, and the
hardest part is for the teacher to complete.

Directions:
- Students and teacher will stand in a circle
- The person to the left of the teacher will begin by thinking of a
simple, yet fun dance move they can do to the syllables of their
name
- Once they think of a dance move, they will do it while saying
their name out loud
- The student to the left of the first student will then begin by
stating the name and doing the dance move of the student
before them
- Once they do that, then they can think of their own dance
move and perform it while saying their name
- Each student in the circle will start by doing the dance move
and stating the name of all of the students that went before
them and then create their own dance move to perform to
their name.
- The last person to go should be the teacher who will have to
recreate each student’s dance move while also reciting each
of their names
- Have fun!

Classroom Newsletter
and Student Survey

Each week I plan to create a classroom newsletter using the website

Smore.com. This website will allow me to easily create a digital
newsletter that will be accessible to anyone whoever has the link.
Additionally, I will send home printout copies of my newsletter in my
students’ daily take home folders to ensure everyone has access to
it. I think this will serve as a key communication tool between myself
and the parents of my students as it will contain information
regarding upcoming important dates, classroom wish list, volunteer
sign-up sheets, my contact information, and teacher conference
hours. This specific newsletter that will be posted and given out
during the first week of school contains a survey for my students to fill
out with the help of their parents. This survey will allow me to get to
know my students and be able to adjust my lesson plans
accordingly.

9
10
Classroom Constitution
I plan to introduce the idea of creating a classroom constitution to
my students after I have made it clear to them what my classroom
expectations are. Using what they know about what I expect from
them and what they expect from each other, they will make up,
write down, and execute their own rules. I will facilitate and make
sure the rules are applicable and coherent. I want the rules to focus
on what the students expect from each other and how they are
expected to act. If they want to include rules on how I should treat,
that would be acceptable as well. Once they have finished creating
their rules, they will each sign the bottom of the constitution and will
be expected to follow through with these rules for the rest of the
school year. The main point of this activity is to let the students know
that I trust them enough to create their own rules for the classroom.
Hopefully, creating their own rules and signing the bottom of the
constitution will create a sense of responsibility to enforce and follow
these rules considering they were written and chosen by them.
Overall, I think it is a very important and necessary activity that will
create a bond between teacher and students and between the
students themselves.

Classroom Layout
Regular Instruction

This classroom layout depicts how my classroom will be set up on the

first day of school and throughout most of the year. I have grouped
my students in order to encourage group collaboration during
activities and assignments. I have also made sure that each student
will be able to clearly see the board as that is where the class
PowerPoint will be displayed and where I will be standing during a
lesson if I am not walking around. There is adequate space for my
students and myself to move around without bumping into anything
or tripping. The classroom library is in a corner so that it will be cozier.

13
Classroom Layout
Socratic Seminar

I designed this classroom layout specifically for days when I have a

class discussion or Socratic seminar planned. The students’ desks are
in a complete circle so that everyone will be able to look at each
other when discussing topics. There is also a space for me to sit as I
plan to be actively engaged in all discussions. The board will not
necessarily be in use for a lesson these days so it’s okay that some
students have their backs to the board.

14
Classroom Layout
Testing Days

For testing days, I wanted to ensure that the students’ desks were far
enough apart to prevent them from being able to cheat. I want my
tests to be accurate representations of what each student is
comprehending, and this will not be possible if they are copying off
one another. All of the desks are facing my desk that way if I am at
my desk, I will be able to keep an eye on each student. There is also
plenty of space between the desks to ensure I can walk around
throughout the entirety of the test.

15
Book Nook
A hobby of mine I have always adored is reading. Something I wish
to instill in my student is that same admiration for reading. I plan to
make this possible by creating a positive reading environment in my
own classroom. I want to have a classroom library with books that I
love and popular movies that were based on books. For the library, I
will have a class check-out which will allow students to check out a
book they’re interested in and keep in their desks until they finish
reading it. The movies will be available to check out and take home
only after students have read the corresponding book. The
classroom library will surround a very cozy, comfy, and inviting
reading space. There will be bean bags, and places for students to
read the book they have just checked out from the school library or
my own classroom library.

18
Turn-in-Tray
The turn-in-tray serves as one place where students know to turn in all
paper assignments/activities while also keeping everything
organized. Unlike the picture, my turn in tray will have separate trays
for homework assignments, late assignments, in-class assignments,
permission slips, and make-up work rather than subjects. This will
prevent my desk from becoming cluttered with assignments and
paper. It also is very clear to students about what needs to be
placed where. I think this will be very beneficial especially after a
long day when I have to grade assignments, I’ll know exactly which
tray to pull assignments from.

Attention Grabber
Hey-Ho

The attention grabber I wish to use the entire school year is

the Hey-Ho attention grabber. This will be practiced the very
first day and will be used to get my student’s attention and
quiet them down. If they are every getting too loud or not
paying attention to me during a lesson, I will say “Heyyy”,
and in response they will be expected to say “Ho” and
immediately quiet down and turn all of their attention on
me. I also plan to use this attention grabber at recess to let
my students know when it is time to line up and go back to
the classroom. I don’t want to overuse this as I think
overtime it can get annoying and the more I use it the less
students will respond. Overuse of this and any attention
grabber could result in the students no longer responding to
or following the expectations of the attention grabber.

20
CHAMPS
I came across the idea of CHAMPS from one of the examples and I
immediately fell in love with the idea. The light board is something
that I have never seen in a classroom before and I think it will be
intriguing enough to get the students’ attention as well as coerce
them into following what the board says. The letters in CHAMP stand
for:
- C = Communication
- H = Help
- A = Activity
- M = Movement
- P = Participation
Under each letter will be levels that describe the expectations of the
students during an activity or assignment. Which level will be lit
depends on what activity or assignment we are completing at that
time. This will provide a clear representation of what’s expected from
my students.

Classroom Expectations
The Big Five Respects

1. Respect your classmates’ and teacher’s feelings and emotions

2. Respect your classmates’ and teacher’s belongings
3. Respect your classmates’ and teacher’s culture and ideologies
4. Respect your classmates’ and teacher’s physical space
5. Respect your classmates’ and teacher’s opinions

The number one characteristic I want my classroom to be centered

around is respect. This of course goes back to the Golden Rule, “Do
unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Everyone wants
to be respected and the only way to receive respect is to give it. This
idea will be introduced to my students on the very first day and will
be implemented every day after. I also want to implement the idea
that if anyone ever feels disrespected, then they should express this
issue starting by saying “I feel disrespected because ...” I think
encouraging open conversation about respect will allow my
students to express their emotions verbally in a calm manner. I hope
it will encourage conversation for them to grow from rather than
fights.

23
Daily Take Home Folder
The daily take home folder will serve many important roles in my
classroom. Regarding discipline, the folder will contain a calendar
and every morning I will collect all of my student’s folders and keep
track of their behavior. I will put any forms for parents, graded
assignments, and progress/report cards inside of the folders
throughout the day. At the end of the day they will receive either a
green, yellow, or red sticker on that day of the calendar and this
color will correspond to their behavior that day. Green will mean
they behaved accordingly to classroom guidelines and to the
classroom constitution. Yellow will mean they could have behaved
better, and Red will mean they completely disregarding the
classroom constitution and/or the classroom guidelines. The students
will be given their folders at the end of the day and will be required
to get their folders signed by their parents and return them to me the
next day. The reason I want the folders to be signed every night is
because I want to ensure that the parents are aware of their child’s
behavior in my classroom. I also want to ensure that any important
paperwork or documents I provide in the folders are directly
received by the parents. I think this is a way to make sure that any
discipline that occurs is privately handled through myself, the
student, and the student’s parents.

Think Sheet
I wanted to create a form that will be given to students during Lunch
Detention. Students in lunch detention will have to eat their lunch
with me and reflect on their behavior. They will be given this sheet to
fill out and turn in to me. After I have read through the sheet, we will
discuss the child’s answers and how we can work together to
improve their behavior.

Disciplinary Hierarchy Chart

Level 1: This level will consist of three verbal warnings. If a student

receives three verbal warning for the same offense, level 2 disciplinary
actions will be followed.

Level 2: Level 2 consists of lunch detention and the think sheet. Lunch
detention allows the opportunity for the student and I to have private
discussion about their behavior and how we can work together to
improve it.

Level 3: If the student continues to commit the same offense after

three verbal warnings and after lunch detention, then their parents will
receive a call home in order to schedule a parent-teacher
conference.

Level 4: This is the final level and will result in involving the
administration. At this level, communication with the child is no
longer effective and further discipline from administration is
necessary.

Classroom Currency
and Treasure Box

My classroom currency is going to serve as a reward system and

motivation for my students to engage in classroom activities and
good behavior. Some acts that my students will do that will allow
them to earn classroom currency will be:
- Volunteering to answer questions I ask during class
- Engaging in classroom discussion
- Assists me in a task
- Performs an outstanding act
- Completes their Classroom Helper assignment for the day
- Any other act I may deem deserves positive reinforcement
This will instill a sense of responsibility when it comes to saving their
currency for the most worthwhile item or event. There will be items for
purchase in the treasure box as well as special events I will host
throughout the school year where entry can be bought with the
currency. Also, students will have to take into consideration the
expiration dates for the currency as I’d like to motivate students to
keep up their good behavior throughout the entire year, not just
when they are saving up for something.

29
Fun Extra Credit Opportunities
Something that I remember significantly from elementary
school was one of my teachers hosting after school
activities that were worth extra credit towards our grades.
Sometimes we could receive extra credit for being involved
in extracurricular activities. Specifically, I want to offer Movie
Nights and Book Clubs for my classroom to have the
opportunity to earn extra credit. The movies I show can
include those of which that were made based off of book
we are reading in class, movies that contain an important
message that students can learn from, or anything that
make my students think and cause a discussion. The Movie
Night will begin shortly after school lets out on a Friday
afternoon and will end when the movie ends. Then, students
will have to write a paper on what they learned from the
film. The Book Club will be exactly what it sounds like. We will
read books that challenge my students and teach them an
important lesson and instead of papers, they will receive
extra credit based off of their involvement in discussion of
the chosen book. I hope these will encourage students to
become involved in activities that interest them while also
spending some fun time learning without them actually
realizing they are learning.

31
Fun Apps
I want to incorporate technology into my classrooms as much as I
am possible. I think ignoring the importance of technology will only
cause students to fall behind to the other children their age. I want
to use fun apps to also engage my students. Apps like Kahoot! will
allow me to check ensure my students are comprehending topics
discussed in class. Other apps like Class Dojo will randomly call on
students and will act as an engaging way to be involved.

32
Classroom Helpers
My classroom helpers will be a great way to not only make things
easier on me but to also show my students that I trust them to be
responsible with jobs around the classroom. I also hope it allows them
to build a sense of pride when it comes to completing a specific task
or job because their classmates and teacher are on depending
them to do a good job. Helper jobs I have in mind are:
- Mailperson: student in charge of taking attendance/delivering
papers or items to somewhere else in the school
- Timekeeper: student will keep track of when time is up for an
assignment or when it is five minutes until lunch/recess/specials
- Book nook librarian: student when be in charge of book/movie
check-sin or check-outs
- Classroom organizer: student will overlook classroom after it has
been cleaned to ensure it has been cleaned and organized
properly
- Lunch box bin carriers: two students will be in charge of
carrying the lunch box bin to and from lunch
- Paper collector/distributor: student will collect
papers/assignments from students to turn in to me and will also
help pass out papers
