ROI-S04605 FUNCTIONAL OPERATION

2. FUNCTIONAL OPERATION
This chapter describes the functional operation of the ODU which
comprises of transmitter section, receiver section, and alarm and control
section. A functional block diagram is shown in Fig. 2-1.

2.1 Transmitter Section

This section describes Engineering Orderwire (EOW) signal demodulation
and IF-to-RF conversion.

The 850 MHz IF signal which comprises an EOW signal, monitor (MON)
signal, alarm and control signals and DC component from the IDU is
separated through the MPX circuit. The EOW signal is processed at the
CPU and fed to the RX LEV MON jack. The DC component is applied to
the PS module to produce regulated DC voltages which are used in the
ODU. The 850 MHz IF signal enters the mixer (MIX) through the AGC
AMP which compensate for any input IF signal level variations.

The MIX mixes the incoming 850 MHz IF signal with a [ ] GHz band local
signal generated by the synthesized RF local oscillator to produce the
specified transmit RF signal.

The transmit RF signal enters a BPF which eliminates undesired

components generated in the IF-to-RF conversion. The filtered RF signal
goes to the RF amplifier where it is amplified to the required level by an
automatic level control (ALC) circuit. The amplified RF signal is then fed
to the antenna through the Duplexer.

The automatic transmitter power control (ATPC) function automatically

varies the TX output power according to path conditions. Fading exerts
heavy influences on propagation, causing the receive signal level at the
opposite station to vary. The ATPC function operates by controlling the
transmitter output power of the local station according to the variation of
the received signal level at the opposite station. The received signal level
variation at the opposite station is informed to the local station using the
ATPC bits in the overhead.

Normally, the ATPC function is used as ATPC-ATPC mode between two

stations. However, different mode such a MTPC-ATPC mode can be used
also.

When the ATPC function is used, setting of the RX threshold level is

required on the setting menu with the PC (refer to 3.4 Equipment Setting
and Monitoring in Section III MDP Equipment Description). The relations
of ATPC and RX threshold level are as follows:

The ATPC range can be set within 30 dB, from −30 (MIN) to 0 dB
(MAX), and the RX threshold level can be selected from −80 to −30 dBm.

2-1
FUNCTIONAL OPERATION ROI-S04605

The ATPC operates with the RX hysteresis characteristics of 5 dB (fixed)

in UP, DOWN and HOLD modes.

In UP mode:operates when the RX received level has fallen less than RX

threshold level. (selected MAX is limited UP level.)

In DOWN mode:operates when the RX received level has risen more than
RX threshold with hysteresis level. (selected MIN is
limited DOWN level.)

In HOLD mode:operates when the RX received level is within RX

threshold level with hysteresis level and RX threshold
level. Or under FSYNC ALM condition.

For example, when the MAX is set to 0 dB, MIN is set to −10 dB in the
ATPC TX power range, and the RX threshold is set to −60 dBm. In this
case, if RX received level has fallen lower than −60 dBm, the TX output
rises in 1 dB step in UP mode of the ATPC control by comparing the RX
received level with the RX threshold level in 1 dB step. Then, the RX
received level has risen within −60 to −55 dBm, the TX power is
maintained in the HOLD mode.

−55 dBm (−75 to −25 dBm)

RX
Hysteresis RX Received Level
5 dB Fixed

RX Threshold Level
Time −60 dBm (−80 to −30 dBm settable)

The ATPC operates under the ODU alarm conditions are described as
follows:

When the ATPC MAX PWR control is continuously activated more than
90 sec., the MAX PWR ALM is generated under the frame synchronized
conditions. But, it does not counting during the FSYNC ALM condition.

When the FSYNC ALM condition is continued more than 90 sec..

The MAX PWR ALM is released when the ATPC becomes DOWN mode,
manual switchover control is performed for standby channel in HS system,
or control setting of CW, MUTE, ATPC manual ctrl, FE/NE loop back or
TX SW ctrl in HS system is performed in MAINT mode, or changing the
setting of MTPC, TX/RX frequency, BIT rate.

The following is an example of MTPC-ATPC mode operation between

two stations.

2-2
ROI-S04605 FUNCTIONAL OPERATION

STATION A RX TX STATION B

MTPC ATPC
(Tx power is fixed at MTPC level.)
(RX threshold level is set to −50 dBm)

The transmitting level of station B is controlled so that the receiving level

of station A reaches the RX threshold set level (−50 dBm) which is set in
station A. This method is used in station A for reducing the level of
interference to other route. As station A is set in the MTPC mode, the
transmitting level is kept unchanged.

Then an example of using MTPC-ATPC is shown below. As shown in the

figure, in the master station communicating with many substations and
when the RX received level fell, the TX power rises, diffraction signal
interfere with other route. Therefore, set to MTPC mode to keep constant
TX level in master station. The substations must be set ATPC mode to
minimize the diffraction (interference) to other routes at the master station
while the receiving level is down in propagation at individual substations.
In substations, there is little possibility of occurrence of the diffraction;
therefore, the master station can be set in the MTPC mode to permit
transmission at a constant level.

A constant transmit output power in both MTPC and ATPC is maintained

using the ALC function which is provided in the RF CKT module. The
ALC circuit detect the transmit output power using a diode to obtain a DC
voltage proportional to the transmit power. The gain of the RF amplifier is
controlled inversely with this detected DC voltage to maintain the transmit
output power within the specified limits.

2.2 Receiver Section

This part describes RF-to-IF conversion, IF-to-IF conversion and EOW
signal modulation.

An RF signal received from the antenna are filtered by the BPF and enters
the first MIX. The first MIX mixes the applied RF signal with an local
signal which is generated by a synthesized RF local oscillator to produce a
first IF signal. Then, the IF signal is fed to the second MIX through the
BPF which eliminates undesired components. The second MIX mixes the
1st IF signal with a local signal generated by a synthesized IF local
oscillator to produce a 70 MHz IF signal.

The 70 MHz IF signal passes a 70 MHz BPF which eliminates undesired

components. The filtered 70 MHz IF signal goes to the main IF amplifier
(MAIN IF AMP). The IF signal amplified by the MAIN IF AMP with
automatic gain control (AGC) passes through the MPX circuit.

The MPX circuit combines alarm, monitoring and response signals which
are processed at the CPU in the ODU and the EOW signal with the IF
signal. These signals are fed to the IDU from the MPX circuit.

2.3 Alarm and Control Section

Alarm and control functions of the ODU are described here. Fault
detection circuits are provided in the ODU. The detected alarm signals are
gathered into the CPU which processes the alarm signals to be sent to the
IDU. Here, the TX PWR ALM signal is produced by the T PWR MON
signal issued from the RF AMP circuit and the IF INPUT ALM signal is
produced by the TX IF LEV MON signal issued from the IF amplifier with
AGC AMP circuit. The RX LEV ALM is also produced by the RX IF LEV
MON signal issued from the MAIN IF AMP circuit. The initiated alarm
signals are sent to the IDU combined with the IF signal through the MPX
circuit. Fault in the ODU can be monitored with alarm indicators on the
IDU. The received RF signal level can be monitored at the RX LEV MON
jack of the ODU by connecting the OW/RX LEV Monitor (optional) or
digital voltmeter.

In addition, the following operating condition of the ODU are monitored at

the IDU by connecting the personal computer.

• Transmitter output power

• Received signal level

• DC voltage

2-5
FUNCTIONAL OPERATION ROI-S04605

The setting of the radio frequency and TX output power are performed
from the IDU using personal computer. The TX output power can be
controlled by a control command signal (T PWR CTRL) from the IDU.

To communicate with the opposite station or with the IDU using

orderwire, an optional OW/RX LEV monitor unit is necessary, the HEAD
SET jack is provided on the OW/RX LEV Monitor. Therefore, connect the
OW/RX LEV Monitor to the RX LEV MON jack on the ODU.

ROI-S04605 MAINTENANCE

4. MAINTENANCE
This chapter provides instructions for periodic maintenance and corrective
maintenance of the ODU. Also included is information on precautions,
test equipment and accessories.

4.1 Precautions
The following precautions must be carefully observed during
maintenance.

1. The −43 V DC power is superimposed on the centre conductor

of the coaxial cable between the IDU and ODU. Connecting a
measurement set directly to this port may damage the test
equipment and touching the coaxial cable core may cause
electrical shock. So, power down IDU before disconnection or
connection of cable.

2. To protect the internal circuits against electrostatic discharge,

engineers are requested to wear a wrist band and connect it to
the Frame Ground (FG) terminal for Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD) before detaching the shield cover (see Fig. 4-1).

3. Before the start of maintenance, including operation of the

OPR SEL SW on the front panel of the equipment, select the
equipment to maintenance mode using the LCT.

4. After all operation for maintenance have been completed,

perform MAINT OFF setting.

Do not turn on the power of the IDU leaving cable connection

between the PC and RA PORT of the IDU.

5. It is recommended that you connect the IDU to ODU after the

TX/RX frequency and TX power control setting has been set on
the IDU.

6. This process is most important for the following ODUs that may
be emitted TX power if you set the channel number to "0ch"
which is not defined (excepting 13/26/38 GHz band) by the
Radio Frequency Assignment.

Code No. of Corresponding ODU:

4.5 Corrective Maintenance

This chapter describes the corrective maintenance in the field. Corrective
maintenance in the field covers fault isolation, replacement and alignment.
The procedures describes equipment-level fault isolation. Therefore if an
ODU is found faulty, it should be replaced with a spare and aligned.

During corrective maintenance, carefully observe the precautions given in

chapter 4.1 until alignment is completed.

4.5.1 Fault Isolation

Alarm conditions are identified through:

• Red alarm (ODU LED) indication on the IDU or

• Notification from external equipment

During alarm conditions, red ODU indicator on the IDU is lit except when
there is a power supply failure. Faults can be isolated as shown in Fig. 4-4.

Also, refer to Chapter 4 Maintenance in the Section III MDP Equipment

Description for Fault Isolation Flow Chart.
