1. SCADA CENTRAL STATION:

a. Introduction

SCADA is ‘Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition’. The major function of

SCADA is for acquiring data from remote devices such as valves, pumps,
transmitters etc. and providing overall control remotely from a SCADA software
platform.

This provides process control locally so that these devices turn on and off at
the right time, supporting your control strategy and a remote method of
capturing data and events (alarms) for monitoring these processes. SCADA
platforms also provide functions for graphical displays, alarming, trending and
historical storage of data.

Instrumentation, ICA PLC control works at the following pumping stations and

There are three additional pump stations which will be operating along with the
above mentioned pumping stations. They are included under the scope of this
Kirlupone Project. They are as follows:
11. Kalinga Mawatha Pump Station

12. Thalakotuwa Pump Station

13. S-8 Pump station

Refer to system configuration drawing No LE150572-I-WW-SW-CR-MAD-5002, R - B

Following equipment’s are considered in the Centre control room at

Maligakanda for monitoring the individual Pumping station operations,

i) Instruments are provided at each pumping station as indicated in the

P&ID
ii) ICA (Instrumentation, Control and Automation) panel with control PLC
and HMI (Touch Panel) at each pumping station
iii) GSM modems (ELPRO) at each pump station and at central control
room for two way data communication between all stations with suitable
accessories.
iv) Central control room equipment including,
a) Two work stations facilitating operator log-in and Engineer log-in
with user pass word control.
b) Laptop computer configured as Portable Engineering Station with
suitable SCADA software / PLC Programming software and HMI
Configuration software.
c) Asset management computer with access to the printers.

e) One 52 inch wall mounted LED screen for demonstrations.

f) Three printer, one dot matrix type, one color (A3) one laser jet.

2. ICA PLC PANEL (ICA)

ICA PLC is the main component in HMI system that has a direct connection with
Transmitters, valves and motors associated with a control device.

These ICA’s are nothing but real-time programmable logic controllers

(PLCs) which are responsible for properly converting remote station information
to digital form for GSM modem to transmit the data and also converts the
received signals from master unit in order to control the process equipment.

3. GSM MODEM

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) router is considered at each

pumping station and at central control room for two way data communication
between all stations with suitable accessories.
