The virtual plant tour talks about how a coal fired thermal power station produces electricity or
works as a whole, before proceeding; A coal fired thermal power plant station or power plant is a facility
that burns coal to produce steam that drives the turbine to generate electricity. A coal fired thermal
power station undergoes a long process in order for it to produce its product, electricity. The process is
made up of minor and major systems, the first of the major systems is the coal it is the fuel that we use
to heat up water to produce steam that will make the turbines work and so on.

The long process starts when the coal is delivered by the ship and is unloaded to the stacker, and
is spread in coal yard or its storage wherein it will be harvested or collected once again by the re-claimer
and be fed to the day silo and into the pulverizer where the coal will be turned into fine dust. The coal
dust is then dried with a pre-heated air from the combustion, the same air that will blow the coal into the
boiler. In the boiler the boil will be burned and combustion begins. Fuels that can be used in the boiler
may differ depending on its type, the fuel can either be coal oil fuels, or natural gas. The widely used
type of boiler is water tube boiler system it can pressurized the water high and also produces a lot of
steam, this boilers systems are big it ranges from 40-60 meters in height.

Now, moving to the next part of the process. We know that water is being brought to the boiler
to be heated it starts with a water inlet then water is then fed to the deaerator to be processed since
unprocessed water from rivers or any bodies of water won’t work because it will cause corrosion and
other problems in the equipment. The water being delivered into deaerator is already filtered out to
remove floating particles that maybe in the water and when the water is inside, the oxygen and CO 2 is
then being reduced from the water. The processed water will move next to the boiler feedwater pump.
The Pump will increase the pressure of the feedwater that will be delivered into the economizer, the part
of the system where we pre-heat water before moving to the main water tube broiler. Pre-heating the
water prevents the water from causing damage into the tube such cracks etc., after being preheated it is
then moved into the main boiler tubes.

Steam is then produced, steam has 3 types, wet steam, dry steam, and a superheated steam. A wet
stream is the most common type of steam that we normally see, it contains many water molecules with it
and if it is super dry it has no water molecules in it. A steam is colorless and odorless. The steam drum
separates the moisture of the steam from it through the use of steam cyclones or series of baffles or a
combination of both. Wet steam is then moved to a super heater to be really heated up, the superheated
steam is then moved to a high pressure turbine that it will drive. Some of the steam that passed through
the turbine is then delivered back to the boiler to be reheated, after reheating, the steam is then delivered
to the intermediate pressure turbine next to a low pressure turbine. After passing through all these
turbines the steam has already lost a lot of heat and already served all its purpose.

The next system will be the cooling system, after the steam has served its, purpose it is then
cooled and being brought back to the deaerator to be processed and sent to the boiler once again. We
cool the heated steam through the use of a cooling tower, a cooling tower has large reservoir from
which we suck out water this water is then used to reject the heat from the heated steam. The rejected
heat is then released to the atmosphere then the cooled steam will then drop down to the reservoir and be
delivered to the condenser which will deliver water for another cycle of heating and cooling.
