Lighting in our workspaces and houses are very important, we may not think of its importance most of the
time but it can really affect our daily lives and the decision we make when designing or building something.
Taking into consideration the lighting can affect how a room is designed, the activities that will be done in that
particular room can also be based from the lighting. Losses in one’s business of company can also be affected by
lighting, it can also affect the health of an individual. That’s how big lighting affect our lives. Without proper
lighting and control of it, these devices will not be very efficient therefore will yield tremendous losses
technically and financially.

Mr. Abel Oliquiono talked about what makes a lighting control effective, and he told us that there are
several things to consider; Eliminates waste while providing a productive visual environment, provide the right
amount of light where it’s needed, and also the proper judgement of when to use the light. When we talk about the
right amount of light, control must be able to adapt spaces to uses it, provide the ability to users the control over
light levels, and support visual needs while eliminating waste. When taking into account the “when” of effective
light control we need to know and understand 3 things: If the occupancy of the space is predictable we use
Scheduling, if it is not we use Occupancy Sensors, and if daylight is available we use daylight harvesting.
Occupancy Sensors, these are electronic devices that senses the presence of someone in a given area, it can be
used to control HVAC and lighting. Mr. Oliquino discussed 3 sensors during the presentation, the Passive Infrared
Sensor, Ultrasonic Sensor, and Multi-technology or the combination of the first two. Passive infrared senses the
difference of the heat of human in motion and the human in background, it requires a line of sight and can detect
motion in its field of view, and it cannot see through obstacles. An ultrasonic sensor on the other hand emits
ultrasonic frequencies to monitor the occupancy through the changes in the signal it receives from the transmitted
frequencies, it does not require a line of sight, and is more sensitive. Lastly multi-technology this is the
combination of Passive Infrared and Ultrasonic the Passive infrared is the one that triggers the on the light and the
ultrasonic sensor is the one that is keeping the light on. This sensor eliminates the disadvantages of the two
sensors individually. Daylight harvesting is an automated control strategy that maximizes the use of natural light
and minimizes the use of lighting in a given space. Lastly an effective lighting control, control zones establish
control granularity.

Lighting control plays a big part in our life right now, it helps in the conservation of energy, the
protection of our environment, and the decrease in power consumption and losses. As a future engineer I think
that we should continue using and developing this technology to lessen our power consumption even more, and
maybe someday e can find an even more efficient way of lighting our facilities and homes.
