Letter of Intent

I am writing to apply for the master’s degree program of Turkish Burslari. It is so exciting to take master’s
degree from an international and prestigious university like Turkish universities, additionally it is a good
opportunity to make a remarkable progress in my educational field and thus to serve my downtrodden people. I
am a bachelor in water supply and environmental engineering. Afghanistan in my native country but I was born
in Iran, during immigration. After returning to my hometown, I faced with a lot of problems and also challenges
that made me who I am today. Since I was a 10th class student, besides my studying I have worked as a
teacher in some private academic centers and this helped me to develop my communication and presentation
skills. During my undergraduate studies, many times I stood out among the other students in many
presentations and seminars. In my professional experiences, I have worked as mechanical engineer in a
private engineering company. It did not take a long time that I got the Implementer Engineer position in
mechanical affairs and the distinguished project that I have done was the Fire Sprinkler System at AUAF
Dormitory and it tested and commissioned as well and without problems. In every step of my life I have got a lot
of experiences and faced with a lot of challenges, fortunately they made me ripe person, but these are not
enough. In conclusion, I would like to say that I am eager to gain new experiences, improve my skills and
broaden my understanding of the environmental engineering, and I persuaded that studying in the Turkish
universities would contribute to my development as a specialist of international level in the best possible way.

Environmental Technology

Solid Waste Management in Kabul City

2- Working Title (Up to 15 words)(Please write in short and concise terms the title of your work as a thesis or an article title.)

It is almost true that everyone creates waste; some people are very environmentally conscious and create very
little waste, likewise some countries like Turkey are so green and they do very good job in producing and
generating less waste and managing or recycling the rest as well. But the others are making some huge
environmental problems for the people and animals, and Afghanistan is one of them. The estimated solid waste
generation rate in Kabul city ranged between 0.31 and 0.43 kg/capita/day, the total solid waste generation in
Kabul on average reaches to 1702 Tons per day, of which 70% is organic materials. Increasing population and
urban growth is also causing to add problems. Despite increasing population, the wrong management of solid
waste materials which are no longer useful can lead to lots of environmental pollution (air pollution, water
pollution, and etc.) and outbreaks of vector-borne disease (Malaria, Tuberculosis, Cholera, Typhoid, and
Dysentery). By using a good solid waste management all environmental problems in Kabul will be prevented
and objective of this study will be to find out effective ways of solid waste management such as recycling,
reusing and reducing.

This study will be based on both primary and secondary data sources. Different secondary data sources on the
theme of solid waste management will be consulted. These include various textbooks, legal documents
(Municipality law), rules, written policies, published research papers, surveys, written reports by both National
and International agencies, previous interviews, news articles, unpublished papers, video clips and other
possible evidences and sources. The information obtained from these secondary sources will be used to
describe the situation of SWM in Kabul. Primary data will be collected from field visits to landfill sites, waste
collection points, composting plants, waste recycling hubs; transect walks in the streets. Different
questionnaires and surveys will be organized with different layers (citizens and municipality workers/staff) of the
community to collect reliable quantitative and qualitative data and have a clear understanding of SWM in Kabul.
Focused Group Discussion with people, civil society activists, and interaction with experts, government officials,
municipality workers, staffs and people from different layers and parts of the city were conducted. For the
intention of a better analysis of the collected data during the surveys different software such as MS Excel, and
MS Project will be used to represent data to make the research more understandable and unambiguous for the
readers. All the collected information will be presented in the form of maps, charts, figures, photos, tables and
graphs in the body of the Thesis.

The overall research will be broken down into six chapters. The first chapter will include a brief background of
the study, problem formulation, and the significance of the study. Chapter two will include the introduction of the
study area, and the methodology applied in the study. Chapter three will describe the existing situation,
practices and challenges in solid waste management in the study area. Chapter four will include Framework
and Strategy for Solid Waste Management Planning for Kabul City. Chapter five of the study will discuss about
Implementation Plan for Solid Waste Management of Kabul city. Chapter six will focus on the recommendations
and conclusion for improving the solid waste management system.

My academic field is Water Supply and Environmental Engineering, and solid waste management is the most
important issue in the Environmental Engineering, because solid waste is the main source environmental
problems such as water pollution, air pollution, and disease outbreaks. Studying about SWM in Kabul city and
research about it, will improve my knowledge certainly in the environmental field. By working on this issue, my
practical knowledge will be improved too. At my undergraduate studies, I have studied only some lines in the
books and textbooks, it is a good opportunity to gain practical knowledge in my interesting issue.
6- Academic Contribution of the Study (minimum 75, maximum 300 words) (Explain how this study will contribute to your academic field.)

Solid Waste Management is an increasingly complex issue in Kabul; many National and International NGOs
have conducted researches on it. The first academic and systematic research about SWM in the country was
started before 1978 by (Kabul Environmental Engineering Department). Unfortunately, their studies were not
ended that the war started. After that up to the establishment of a new government in Afghanistan till 2001 no
researches have been done on SWM in Kabul and overall the country. After 2001 and establishment of Hamid
Karzai’s government, due to its importance, efforts were started in all aspects such as creation of National
Waste Management Policy, revision of Municipality law and Environmental law in 2007 by NEPA as a
legislative agency of the government. Different organizations have published their reports and articles,
according to WB report as a result of more than two decades of conflict, exodus of trained professional, low
salary, and lack of incentives to new approaches, generally the institutional capacity of Kabul Municipality &
Directorates of Sanitation is weak & needs to be developed to make them able to manage the generated
wastes of Kabul city (World Bank, 2007). As per the research conducted by UNEP, “Despite low levels of
consumption and production, weak management of solid waste is already one of the country’s most glaring
environmental problems. If rapid population growth, refugee returns and urbanization continue as predicted, the
situation of SWM in the country will be worse (UNEP, 2002). The collection and proper disposal of solid waste
falls well short of the amount being produced, resulting in a situation in which solid waste is polluting the land
and water ecosystems in those areas, Promoting and designing sustainable waste collection and disposal is
very important to reduce pollution and also improve health conditions of the citizens (UN-Habitat, 2015).

To show my best version, just I need a chance as I got in my high school studies, such I graduated with 93%
scores, and in my professional career, whereas I had just graduated from university, upon employment of me in
a private engineering company I could get the implementer engineer position, but during my undergraduate
studies because of some Ethnic prejudices I could not do my best as I wanted.
