Introduction

Before we touch on to this lesson, let’s


differentiate first these terms:

Artist and Artisan


What is an Artist?
Artist are the one who
produced any manifestation of
artistic arts.

The unique specialty of artists is to


visualize the unpredictable
imaginations that only some person
can do in a form of artistic works.
What is Artisan?
- They are skilled workers that
involved in skilled trade using
their bare hands in making things
or materials.

- An artisan is able to produce


something that has a functional
value.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853

famous artists and artisans and their
medium and technique used in creating
artworks. Some players involve in
production of an art work will be recognize
their roles as well.

- Gothic cathedrals and other massive st
ructures that were built in Europe during
Middle Ages.

- Craftsmen and builders during this era ar


e not well-educated like architects and e
ngineers now a days but they accomplis
hed the roles as draftsman, architect, eng
ineer and even as the builder.

- The only thing that the artisans have was
a sense on how materials behaved, how t
he environment, light and weather patter
ns affected structures and other strategie
s in creation.

- Gothic cathedrals together with other stru


ctures inspired by its architectural tenets
have survive through time.
- In Germany, one of the great examples of
early Gothic architecture was Cologne
Cathedral. The best account or reference
for this was the famous mason master
Gerhard Ryle when he started the project
in 1248 but it was finished in 600 years,
claiming the record as one of the longest
construction project in history.
