mainstream Modernisme, culminating in an
organic style inspired by nature. Gaudí rarely
drew detailed plans of his works, instead
preferring to create them as three-
dimensional scale models and molding the
details as he was conceiving them.
 Gaudí’s Roman Catholic faith intensified
during his life and religious images permeate
his work. This earned him the nickname

signature approach in which simplified
exterior decoration was determined by a
building's structure.
 "Modern forms," Wagner
declared, "must
correspond to new
materials, contemporary
needs, if they are to be
found suitable for
mankind today."
 The Post sparkasse (Post
Office Savings Bank,
1904-6) and the Kirche
am St einhof (St. Leopold's Church, 1905) were among his last buildings,

ArcStudio+
Refresher for HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE

B. ST. PETER’S BASILICA

 Pope Julius declared a competition for St. Peter’s

Basilica and was won by DONATO BRAMANTE
with a plan of a Greek Cross

 Bramante was replaced with GUILIANO DA

SANGALLO, FRA GIACONDO and RAPHAEL -
Sangallo and Fra Giocondo both died in 1515 -
The main change in Raphael's plan is the nave of five bays, with a
row of complex apsidal chapels off the aisles on either side

 Raphael's plan for the chancel and transepts

made the squareness of the exterior walls more
definite by reducing the size of the towers, and
the semi-circular apses more clearly defined by
encircling each with an ambulatory

 BALDASSARE PERUZZI replaced Raphael and

maintained changes that Raphael had
proposed to the internal arrangement of the
three main apses, but otherwise reverted to the
Greek Cross plan and other features of
Bramante
ArcStudio+
Refresher for HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE

 ANTONIO da SANGALLO the Younger submitted a plan which

combines features of Peruzzi, Raphael and Bramante in its design
and extends the building into a short nave with a wide façade and
portico of dynamic projection

 MICHAELANGELO BUONAROTTI took over a

building site at which four piers, enormous
beyond any constructed since the days of
Ancient Rome, were rising behind the remaining
nave of the old basilica

 Michelangelo recognized the essential quality of

Bramante's original design and he reverted to the
Greek Cross plan

 CARLO MADERNO lengthened the nave and is now the existing

plan of the St. Peter’s Basilica and designed the facade on
travertine stone, with a giant order of Corinthian columns and a
central pediment rising in front of a tall attic surmounted by thirteen
statues

 GIANLORENZO BERNINI
designed the baldachino
and added the 284 Ionic
column at piazza

 Michaelangelo died and

the work continued under
his assistant JACOPO
BAROZZI da VIGNOLA with
GIORGIO VASARI
appointed by Pope Pius V as a supervisor to make sure that
Michelangelo's plans were carried out exactly

 Pope Sixtus appointed GIACOMO della PORTA who was to be

assisted by DOMENICO FONTANA

 Giacomo della Porta and Fontana brought the dome to
