Introduction
In this tutorial there will be step by step instructions on how to set a raster analysis extent, perform a
krig, create a slope surface, symbolize a slope surface, create an aspect, and customize the aspect
legend.

Set Raster Analysis Extent


1. Click “Geoprocessing”
2. Select “Environments…”

A new popup window will appear (Figure 1)

3. Scroll and select “Raster Analysis”

4. Input the boundary you want the
Raster to stay on when you perform
the process under “Mask”
5. Click OK Figure 1

Perform a Krig
1. Click Ctrl F on your keyboard
OR
Click “Search” on the right-hand side of
your screen beside catalog
2. Type in “Kriging”
3. Click search
OR
Click enter on your keyboard
4. Select “Kriging (Spatial Analysis) (Tool)”

A popup window will appear as seen in Figure 2

5. Select the point feature class that you want to rasterize and put it in the input
6. Choose what value you want to create the raster (elevation for example)
7. Select where you want to save the raster you will create and name it (preferably in a
geodatabase)
8. Type in the output cell size you want for your raster (example 100).
9. Click OK

Create a Slope Surface
1. Click Ctrl F on your keyboard
OR
Click “Search” on the right-hand side
of your screen beside catalog
2. Type in “Slope”
3. Click search
OR
Click enter on your keyboard
4. Select “Slope (Spatial Analysis)
(Tool)”

A new popup window will appear as seen in

5. Chose your krig or raster you want to create a raster slope for for input
6. Select where you want to save the new raster and name it
7. Chose if you want the output measurement in degrees or percent
8. Click OK

Symbolize the Slope Surface


1. Right-click on the slope feature class in the table
of contents
2. Click properties
3. Click on the symbology tab (Figure 4)
4. Click on the drop box beside classes to select how
many classes you want it to be divided by.
5. Click “Classify” to change how the data is broken
into the classes or to manually select what
number each class switches at.
6. Click on the Color ramp drop down box to chose
what color scheme you want.

Double click on the color box beside each range
to manually select a color
7. Double click on the area under Label in the table and you can type in a label for each class
8. Click OK or Apply

Create an Aspect Surface
1. Click Ctrl F on your keyboard
OR
Click “Search” on the right-hand side
of your screen beside catalog
2. Type in “Aspect”
3. Click search
OR
Click enter on your keyboard
4. Select “Aspect (Spatial Analysis)
(Tool)”

5. Chose your krig or raster you want to create a raster slope for for input
6. Select where you want to save the new raster and name it
7. Chose if you want the output measurement in degrees or percent
8. Click OK

Customize the Aspect Legend


When you create aspect there will end up being more than one North showing up on your table of
contents so you will want to get rid of one of them.

1. Right-click on the aspect in your table of contents


2. Click on Properties
3. Click symbology tab
4. Change the labels on the one north to include the number in both North values
OR
Not which one you want to remove from your table of contents
5. Change to layout view from clicking from the bottom of the page.
6. Click “Insert”
7. Click “Legend…”
8. Go through the Label Wizard making sure the aspect is included in the legend
9. Click OK
10. Right-click on the legend
11. Select “Convert to Graphic”
12. Right-click the legend
13. Select ungroup
14. Click on only the value you want to delete from the table of contents (make sure it is the only
one selected)
15. Click the Delete button on your keyboard or right-click and click delete
16. Select all the legend items again
17. Right-click and select group.
