00:00:25,790 --> 00:00:40,020

[Introductory music] [Brendan] Hello, this is Brendan McDonnell. And welcome to another episode of
Teachers and Technology.

00:00:40,020 --> 00:00:53,280

[Brendan] Today, I am going to be interviewing Miss Hannah Russell, who is an SDS adviser for disabled
students.

00:00:53,280 --> 00:00:58,890

[Brendan] Everybody, please enjoy the following presentation.

00:00:58,890 --> 00:01:06,930

[Brendan] And after this interview, please enjoy the discussion of the educational topic of how
technology has personally helped

00:01:06,930 --> 00:01:12,060

[Brendan] me and improved my work in the classroom over the years that I have spent in school.

00:01:12,060 --> 00:01:32,240

[Brendan] And now we will begin the interview with Mrs. Hannah Russell. [Transition Music]

00:01:32,240 --> 00:01:47,920

[Brendan] So, yeah, what sorts of changes have you seen be made in technology over your...um...over
your career as an SDS adviser?

00:01:47,920 --> 00:01:55,640

[Mrs. Russell] Yeah, I think about a year before I became an adviser in Student Disability Services,

00:01:55,640 --> 00:02:02,510

[Mrs. Russell] we implemented the assistive technology software called Glean, which is a note taking
software.

10

00:02:02,510 --> 00:02:09,110

[Brendan] Oh yes, I remember that.

[Mrs, Russell] Yeah, that was about like a year before I got there.

11

00:02:09,110 --> 00:02:15,470

[Mrs. Russell] But that was a big shift for our office because we were not used to that yet.

12

00:02:15,470 --> 00:02:25,550

[Mrs. Russell] But it seems like now like that's the big company that a lot of SDS offices will use as like
note taking software.

13

00:02:25,550 --> 00:02:29,450

[Mrs. Russell] But slowly, there are some smaller brands that are coming out as well.
14

00:02:29,450 --> 00:02:37,610

[Mrs. Russell] So that's exciting. I think any time you have competition in the marketplace, it helps to
better the products.

15

00:02:37,610 --> 00:02:47,270

[Mrs. Russell] So, I think that's exciting. We also use a software called Kurzweil, and we just did a ...um....

16

00:02:47,270 --> 00:02:54,620

[Brendan] Oh yeah, that one's for keeping a...a sort of library of books on the iPad, right?

17

00:02:54,620 --> 00:03:01,490

[Mrs. Russell] Yeah. So it converts basically textbooks to audiobooks and

18

00:03:01,490 --> 00:03:08,480

[Mrs. Russell] we just did a survey, basically to find out what students like about Kurzweil and what they
don't like.

19

00:03:08,480 --> 00:03:16,310

[Mrs. Russell] And then we looked at some other products to see if other products would benefit
students more.

20

00:03:16,310 --> 00:03:21,770

[Mrs. Russell] So there are a lot of products out there that can convert text to speech.
21

00:03:21,770 --> 00:03:28,850

[Mrs. Russell] So I think that's really cool, too, that you don't have to have like a formal subscription with
Kurzweil or something.

22

00:03:28,850 --> 00:03:38,090

[Mrs. Russell] There's a lot of like extensions on Chrome web extension apps that students can
download on their own as well to just make it more accessible.

23

00:03:38,090 --> 00:03:47,600

[Mrs. Russell] So I think that's probably one of the biggest things that has grown from my perspective is
like just the availability

24

00:03:47,600 --> 00:03:58,130

[Mrs. Russell] of apps instead of like having to have full softwares or even full devices like you used to
have 10 years ago.

25

00:03:58,130 --> 00:04:02,550

[Brendan] Yeah. Oh, that's very interesting. Um, has

26

00:04:02,550 --> 00:04:09,570

[Brendan] Have these changes in a technology presented any difficulties for you?

27
00:04:09,570 --> 00:04:11,950

[Mrs. Russell] Hmm. Yeah, that's a good question.

28

00:04:11,950 --> 00:04:19,660

[Mrs. Russell] I think sometimes there's a learning curve with those technologies and softwares that
students might not be used to.

29

00:04:19,660 --> 00:04:42,310

[Mrs. Russell] So having to teach the software can be difficult sometimes for students, but ultimately it's
been a big benefit for students overall. [Transition music]

30

00:04:42,310 --> 00:04:54,380

[Brendan] Have, uh...have there been any other technologies besides Kurzweil or Glean, that you've
used to help disabled students?

31

00:04:54,380 --> 00:05:00,950

[Mrs. Russell] Yeah, let's think. I think like I was saying earlier, like the apps and things.

32

00:05:00,950 --> 00:05:11,030

[Mrs. Russell] There's a lot of apps that students use to like time management, keep track of things,
organization and whatnot.

33

00:05:11,030 --> 00:05:14,570

[Mrs. Russell] One is a website that I think has helped a lot of students.
34

00:05:14,570 --> 00:05:16,520

[Mrs. Russell] It's called tomato timer.

35

00:05:16,520 --> 00:05:26,090

[Mrs. Russell] Basically just kind of breaks out if you're going to have a twenty-five minute study session,
it will chunk it out to,you know, study for ten minutes,

36

00:05:26,090 --> 00:05:27,380

[Mrs. Russell] take a break for five minutes,

37

00:05:27,380 --> 00:05:34,470

[Mrs. Russell] study for another 10 minutes. And then maybe you take a long break for 10 minutes after
that [Timer sound], and then work for 10 minutes again.

38

00:05:34,470 --> 00:05:37,250

[Mrs. Russell] Small break, work, big break.

39

00:05:37,250 --> 00:05:46,870

[Mrs. Russell] So that really has helped some students as well, just to kind of chunk out their study time
and time management and things.

40

00:05:46,870 --> 00:05:53,620

[Brendan] All right. That's about all the questions that I had for you for this interview.

41

00:05:53,620 --> 00:06:12,140

[Brendan] So thank you very much.

[Mrs. Russell] Yeah, thank you. [Transition Music]

42

00:06:12,140 --> 00:06:16,010

[Brendan] I really enjoyed my conversation with Miss Hannah Russell.

43

00:06:16,010 --> 00:06:22,250

[Brendan] It is very interesting to hear about how she and her team evaluate technology to help
students with disabilities.

44

00:06:22,250 --> 00:06:30,020

[Brendan] I was very excited to learn that the number of electronic apps that students with disabilities
can use is growing.

45

00:06:30,020 --> 00:06:35,990

[Brendan] And now here's the part of the podcast where I will be sharing some of my personal insights

46

00:06:35,990 --> 00:06:41,180

[Brendan] into how technology has personally helped me and improved my work in the classroom
47

00:06:41,180 --> 00:06:55,850

[Brendan] over the years that I have spent in school. [Transition music]

48

00:06:55,850 --> 00:07:04,910

[Brendan] First was the ability to use an electronic device for my school studies. In fifth grade one-to-
one devices were not a thing.

49

00:07:04,910 --> 00:07:09,320

[Brendan] But my school allowed me to get one and use it to dictate my homework.

50

00:07:09,320 --> 00:07:13,610

[Brendan] I had a very long term paper due on a foreign country and handwritten

51

00:07:13,610 --> 00:07:16,430

[Brendan] it was probably about 50 pages long.

52

00:07:16,430 --> 00:07:25,030

[Brendan] But by being able to dictate it into software, it allowed me to complete this paper faster than
it would have taken me to write it.

53

00:07:25,030 --> 00:07:33,060

[Brendan] Second was the ability for the teacher to provide me with digital class notes.
54

00:07:33,060 --> 00:07:40,950

[Brendan] It was a great day when my teachers began to share class notes electronically with me. As I
progressed through school,

55

00:07:40,950 --> 00:07:47,850

[Brendan] the need to take large amounts of notes in each class became more of a challenge and my
physical handwriting

56

00:07:47,850 --> 00:07:55,200

[Brendan] just could not keep up. So when teachers were able to share notes in PowerPoints before the
class lectures,

57

00:07:55,200 --> 00:08:01,920

[Brendan] I was able to follow along with the class more closely and was able to take much fewer notes.

58

00:08:01,920 --> 00:08:09,810

[Brendan] Third was the invention of the LiveScribe app. In later grades, I used an application on my iPad
called LiveScribe.

59

00:08:09,810 --> 00:08:16,500

[Brendan] This app allowed me to use an accompanying pen and to write down notes in my LiveScribe
journal
60

00:08:16,500 --> 00:08:24,270

[Brendan] which would be transferred over to an app from the journal so that I would have all the notes
that I had written down,

61

00:08:24,270 --> 00:08:29,940

[Brendan] also automatically available digitally on my iPad.

62

00:08:29,940 --> 00:08:34,350

[Brendan] And lastly, was the widespread uses of learning management systems.

63

00:08:34,350 --> 00:08:45,030

[Brendan] For example, we use Canvas here at Butler. This has made it much easier for me to keep track
of and submit my homework on time

64

00:08:45,030 --> 00:08:49,440

[Brendan] because my preferred method of homework and test taking is doing so digitally.

65

00:08:49,440 --> 00:08:58,890

[Brendan] The learning management systems allow me an easy way to submit my digital documents
without having to take the time to print them off.

66

00:08:58,890 --> 00:09:08,370

[Brendan] These tools have been amazingly helpful to me, and I do agree with the authors, Garreth
Tigwell and Kristen Shinohara of the article

67

00:09:08,370 --> 00:09:14,190

[Brendan] "Why Getting More People with Disabilities Developing Technology is Good for Everyone".

68

00:09:14,190 --> 00:09:22,440

[Brendan] When they put forth that all of these technologies have helped non-disabled people, too, by
making them more streamlined

69

00:09:22,440 --> 00:09:30,930

[Brendan] in how they have been designed and through making them more user friendly for both
students and teachers as well.

70

00:09:30,930 --> 00:09:40,440

[Brendan] I was lucky that in fifth grade that I was able to use a technology device in the classroom to
help me take notes and do my homework with.

71

00:09:40,440 --> 00:09:50,770

[Brendan] Whereas, nowadays most students are using their own devices to take notes and to turn in
their homework with.

72

00:09:50,770 --> 00:09:58,000

[Brendan] Also, when I used LiveScribe, it was the only pen that was available to take notes and do my
homework with digitally.
73

00:09:58,000 --> 00:10:06,280

[Brendan] And now every iPad comes with its very own digital Apple Pencil, which is capable of doing
the same thing, but for all students,

74

00:10:06,280 --> 00:10:15,370

[Brendan] now, whether they have a disability or not. In these, and many other ways, technology has
not only helps students with disabilities,

75

00:10:15,370 --> 00:10:33,790

[Brendan] but has also helped all able bodied students as well, too. [Transition Music]

76

00:10:33,790 --> 00:10:44,110

[Brendan] I hope that you have enjoyed learning about how technology has impacted Mrs. Hannah
Russell's job as an adviser for students with disabilities.

77

00:10:44,110 --> 00:10:50,230

[Brendan] I enjoyed sharing with you how technology has enabled me to progress in my schooling.

78

00:10:50,230 --> 00:10:56,650

[Brendan] And finally, I hope that you see the value put forth by the authors, Tigwell and Shinohara

79

00:10:56,650 --> 00:11:04,300

[Brendan] and their belief that getting more people with disabilities involved with developing
technologies is good for everybody.

80

00:11:04,300 --> 00:11:52,486

[Brendan] Thank you for listening to this episode of Teachers and Technology. I hope to see you again in
the next episode. [Transition music]
