COOPERATIVE LEARNING LESSON PLAN

I. Describe the Class

This lesson plan is for a class of 20 kindergarten students, including one

disabled learner, one English language learner, and two gifted students.

II. Subject/Skill:

Math/Patterns: Identify and predict patterns

III. Objective(s)

Students will work in groups identify what a pattern is and predict what comes
next in the pattern with 80 percent accuracy.

IV. Procedures- Cooperative Learning- Group work/Performance

1. Objectives:
a. I will begin by stating that we are going to talk about what patterns
are.
b. I will ask the students if they know what a pattern is. The answer is
a design that repeats itself.
c. I will explain to the students that there are many types of patterns.
d. Then I will present a short video to the class to elaborate on
patterns. (approximately two minutes)

2. Prerequisites: Review of shapes and colors. Key term pattern. A pattern is

a design that repeats itself.

3. Group Work Activity:

a. Students will be divided into five groups with five students each
and placed at a table together.
b. I will then place five types of patterns in a hat containing patterns
types ABAB, ABC, AABB, AAB, ABB. One member from each
group will pull a pattern out of the hat. The pattern selected is the
type of pattern each group will be working on with the materials
provided.
c. Groups will be given a poster board and envelope containing
geometrical shapes with different colors.
d. The groups will use the shapes to create their own pattern.
e. The groups will be given ten minutes to begin their pattern and
after their ten minutes the groups will rotate from table to table to
complete the type of pattern started by the previous group.
f. After groups have been rotated to each table and returned to their
original pattern. The groups will come up to discuss what pattern is
displayed at each of their stations.

4. Guided Learning Probes/Guided Practice: While students are working on

their group activity, I will walk around the classroom to ensure that the
groups are correctly designing patterns.

5. Independent Student Practice: Students will be provided with worksheets

that will require to them to complete the color patterns.

V. Materials

 Poster boards
 Glue
 Envelope with shapes
 Pencil
 Activity worksheet
 Crayons

VI. Grouping Structures

Students will work in groups of five. Lesson will be presented in the

classroom.

VII. Modifications

My English language learner and exceptional student will be grouped with my

one of gifted students. The other gifted student will be grouped with in a
separate group with other students.

My support staff will also make sure that my English language learner and
exceptional student understand patterns.
VIII. Assessment

1. Assessing: I will observe students’ participation in the group activity to

assess content knowledge. At the end of the lesson the demonstration of
creating and predicting pattern type in the group activity will determine if
the student is able to identify and predict pattern types.

2. Distributed Practice and Review: No homework will be assigned. I will

continue lesson the following day and review material over the course of
the week with short classroom activities.
