Portfolio Reflection

When it comes to writing, it mostly is natural to me. I enjoy the peacefulness of writing out my

thoughts. It is a stress reliever. However, writing to a prompt can be difficult for me. Through

this class, I have learned that I can be a procrastinator when I do not enjoy the subject I have to

write about. Through this class, I have learned that I struggle when I must meet a word count. I

tend to go over the limit or cannot reach it in the slightest bit. I have learned that I have a deep

enjoyment of writing and that I am not bad at it. I believe that if I continue to improve my

writing skills, it will also help my public speaking skills if I follow through with majoring in

sports broadcasting.

When it comes to getting better and improving my skills for writing, I need to work on

maintaining a good word count. I either excel the word count or cannot meet it by the slightest. I

need to work on not procrastinating an essay when I do not have full enjoyment of the topic. If

the topic is something I do not fully like, I have trouble starting the essay and completing it on a

timely matter. I need to practice writing on diverse topics so I can have the experience and train

myself to be able to write no matter the topic.

My favorite topic that I wrote about was the college application narrative. The essay itself gave

me a lot of clarity that St. Bonaventure is the right choice for me compared to the other schools I
applied to. The most helpful assignment for me was the argumentative essay. It showed me a

different side of writing that I enjoyed. For me, writing about how I passionately believe in

something but still maintain a scholarly aspect of it helped. I believe that will continue to benefit

me in the future.

When I am given an essay to write in the future, I will reread the prompt a few times to fully

understand it possible. Then, before anything else, I will set up my essay in the format provided

to get it out of the way. After that I will begin either researching or brainstorming topics I can

include in the essay. Following that I will write my rough draft. When that is completed, I will

self-edit, read it aloud, and have my mom or my roommate look over to make sure everything

sounds correct. When completed, I will begin my final draft fixing any mistakes. After the final

draft is finished, I will self-edit a few more times and then read it aloud. I will also not

procrastinate finishing the essay. If I am confused, I will ask for help or complete as much as

possible until I am stuck.
