Geographical Indication tag awarded to the Narasingapettai

Nagaswaram

• The Narasingapettai Nagaswaram has

earned the Geographical Indication tag under
‘musical instruments of class 15’.

• The Geographical Indications Registry of

Government of India accorded the recognition
based on an application from Thanjavur Musical
Instruments Workers Cooperative Cottage
Industrial Society Limited.

• The artisans mastered the craft of

producing the wooden instrument from their
predecessors in Narasingapettai, a village near Kumbakonam.

• According to them, it takes three days and three artisans to make one nagaswaram. Each family makes
40 pieces a year.

• Artisans of the nagaswaram choose the wood wisely, a type of ebony, ensuring it is 200 years old, and
which does not absorb moisture. The top portion has a metal staple into which a small metallic cylinder is
inserted to hold the mouthpiece made of reed.

• The unique feature of the nagaswaram is its production process – it is handmade in Narasingapettai
village in Thanjavur in the state of Tamil Nadu, unlike the other machine-made ones.

• The reeds are made from the leaves of a locally grown plant called ‘naanal’ (a variety of bamboo).

• The instrument has a cylindrical body that flares out into a bell shape at the bottom. It is this form that
provides the nagaswaram with its characteristic volume and captivating tone.

• The length of the instrument is two and a half feet. It is a double-reed wind instrument with a large
flaring bell.

About the GI tags

• A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and
possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

Daily Current Affairs- 24th March 2022

• In India, GI registration is administered by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and

Protection) Act of 1999.

• GI tags are typically used for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wine and spirit drinks, handicrafts, and
industrial products.

• Once a product gets this tag, no person or company can sell a similar item under that name. This tag is
valid for 10 years following which it can be renewed.

Recent news related to GI Tag

• The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has launched quick response (QR) code for its GI-tagged
Kashmiri carpet, to preserve the authenticity and genuineness of the hand-knotted carpets. The main
objective of this QR Code attached to the GI tag is to help in reviving the sheen and glory of the Kashmiri
carpet industry.

• The Geographical Indications Registry (GIR) under the Central Ministry of Commerce has accepted the
petition to rename Bihar Makhana as Mithila Makhana and has also suggested further changes to the
brand logo to better reflect its origins.

• Judima, homemade rice wine from Assam and Sojat Mehndi (Henna) from Rajasthan, has been
awarded the geographical indication (GI) tag. A GI tag is awarded to products associated with a specific
geographical origin. Award of a GI sign not only helps in tracing the origins of products but also helps in
confirming authenticity and marketing of indigenous specialities.
