Student Learning Objective(s) and Related Assessment(s):


Learning Target: Students can research East Asian American History and share a
summary of that research in a group document for other students to access. This means
students can utilize another note tracking tool for both their final assessment and future
questions they might have in this class by keeping a tool to keep track of content and
context.

Language Objective: Students will be asked to work with one of their weekly
vocabulary words and implement it into their conversations by doing a word of the day
activity.

Standard(s):
Analyze a complex set of ideas or sequence of events and explain how specific
individuals, ideas, or events interact and develop over the course of the text. (CCSS:
RI.11-12.3)

Learning Activities:

Initiation:
- Students will be doing a word of the day activity where at the beginning of the
class, the teacher will tell the students what the word of the day is, and they will
each be challenged to use that word once during the class period. The word will
be defined, explained, and written on the board at the front of the class so that
students can refer back to it when they need to. They will be expected to use the
word either in response to a question posed by the teacher or when asked to
discuss with their partner (5 Mins)
Lesson Development: EAA Lit - History Minilesson, Book Club Discussions
- The teacher will give a brief overview of the history of East Asian American
Literature, during which students will be taking notes in their journals (15
Minutes)
- Students will either pursue their own interest related to East Asian American
History or choose a prompt from the teacher’s minilesson to guide their individual
research activity. Students will be asked to research East Asian American history,
find a reliable source, and summarize than source in a group document,
essentially creating a class Annotated Bibliography. (35 Mins)
- Book Club Discussions: Students will bring their sticky note annotations to guide
their book club discussions for today. Students are expected to write a minimum
of two sticky notes during their reading (submitted before class begins via a
picture upload on Google Classroom), and address at least one of their sticky note
annotations during discussion. While book club discussions occur, the teacher will
monitor and confer with students on their progress and depth of understanding of
their book (25 Minutes)
Closure: Final Assessment Overview and EAA Lit – History Wrap Up (15 Mins)
- Students will be given an overview of their final assessment rubric and options,
which they will be collecting content for over the course of the unit (10 Mins)
- The teacher will reflect on the importance of understanding the complex history
of East Asian Americans in order to continue to engage with contemporary issues
referenced in modern literature (5 Mins)
