The NEW Centre Break
Disconnectors from Siemens
Our NEW centre break disconnector family is available for rated voltages from
72.5 kV up to 245 kV. The centre break disconnector is the most frequently used
disconnector type worldwide. The base frame (4) carries the compact operating
mechanism (5) and two rotating base mounted supporting insulators (2). In the
closed position, the current flows via the current path arms (1), which are fixed to
the insulators. The disconnector opens in the centre, thus providing an insulating
distance.

Each rotating unit (3) comprises two high quality sealed ball-bearings and is de-
signed for high mechanical loads, therefore providing a maintenance free service
life. These qualities result in low service and investment costs which provide our
customers with competitive advantages worldwide.

3
The Contact System
The main contact system has been adopted from the well established range of Ruhrtal high-voltage dis-
connector products. This system consists of block contacts and spread contact fingers and assures a steady
contact force even after decades of operation. The current flows in the contact head from the terminal (7)
to the current path tube (6) through highly-flexible copper leads (8).

6 7

The most significant features are:

Self-resilient contact fingers, no further spring elements necessary to generate the contact force

Factory-set contact forces, no re-adjustments required during service life

Ice layers up to 20 mm can be broken without difficulties

Silver-plated contact surface providing highest conductivity without regular grease lubrication

Maintenance-free contact system up to 25 years

By using the well-established blockfinger contact system, we provide our customers with very practical
advantages: smooth operation, exemplary availability and optimum security.

4
The Earthing Switch
The use of earthing switches ensures absolute safety by grounding and discharging all high-voltage com-
ponents in a circuit or switchgear. Suitable built-on earthing switches are available for the complete range
of our NEW centre break disconnector types from 72.5 up to 245 kV.

5
Motor Operating Mechanism

2
1

The motor operating mechanism includes all components required for operating the disconnector and
consists of three main subassemblies:

1 Corrosion-resistant housing (protection degree IP 55)

2 Gear unit with motor

3 Electrical equipment with auxiliary switch

The motor operating mechanism can also be operated manually by a hand crank which can be inserted
inside the cubicle. The insertion of the hand crank automatically isolates the motor circuit for safety pur-
poses. Heaters are provided to prevent condensation.
