Tara! Samahan n’yo ako at ating alamin!

Say: To become a wise and healthy consumer in real life, one should apply the knowledge learned, the values acquired, and
the useful and practical skills developed through experience. One of the practical and easy ways to use good decision-making
skills in choosing healthy products is by using DECIDE. DECIDE is a mnemonic model that you can follow to become a
wise and healthy consumer.
Read the following procedures to find out and apply good decision-making skills in whatever you need to buy, especially
when it is about one's general health and well-being. The DECIDE model stands for the six general actions required to
produce quality decisions when buying health products and are as follows:

Determine the essential products to purchase.

Find out if the products you want to purchase are needed for your personal and family health care needs. Ask yourself basic
questions like "Do we need it?" or "Do we want it?" Needs should overcome wants. You can make a list of the things you
need to buy before going to the store or market.
Explore the alternatives.
Visit several stores or shops and compare several factors like quality, quantity, price, and nutritional value. The use of
ecology-safe packages and preparation concerns should also put into consideration. Make a list of products and prices and
compare them carefully.
Consider the consequences of each option.
With your list of products and prices and the benefits, they might be offering, closely study the various
consequences of each option. Ask yourself, "if I buy this one, what will be the outcome? If I decide to take the other one, will
it be a better choice?" A good rule of thumb is to always make quality your priority in choosing your health products so you
will not regret your decision.
Identify factors that are considered important.
What factors would you include in considering health products to buy? These factors can be about

prioritizing quantity over quality, low price-low quality over high price-high quality. Or, do you favor rewards and
incentives? Likewise, health products should have complete details of the information you need to see on the package and
product label when you need to contact the manufacturer or distributor. Labels and instructions should be in an
understandable language for easy reading of procedures and safety reminders.

Decide what to buy.

You are now ready to decide which health product to buy after considerable and careful thinking. Stick to your good decision
as there may be temptations to choose other brands because of irresistible offers and rewards. Remember, a wise consumer is
not impulsive and moves with initial plans and decisions.
Evaluate your decision.
The last part is evaluating your decision. Does the health product you purchase suit your needs? Is it worth the money you
spent? Are there other products and services that are more reliable, quality-proven, and offered for a quality price? If you
think that there are other options, then it is time to re-evaluate your decision-making skills. There is nothing wrong with re-
evaluation because this process will help you become a better and wiser consumer.
