Say: A consumer is someone who purchases products, services, and information. Every human being is a
health consumer. We purchase products for health nutrition, for personal care and wellness, and for
sanitation and protection. We also avail of health services from medical professionals. In this age of digital
technology, more people have easy and fast access to health information using computers. Health products
and services can be purchased online. Since these are not regulated, some health information, products, and
services advertised, promoted, and sold online may cause more harm than good. Online merchants may not
be able to deliver all the health benefits promised, or worse, may put people’s lives in jeopardy.
To better understand the concepts of consumer health, a person needs to familiarize oneself with some basic
consumer health terminologies. The terms below will help you to become a well-informed and healthy
consumer:
✔ Consumer Health – refers to the well-being of individuals purchasing health products and services. It is
an indication of one’s ability to make important decisions in the purchase of health products, and the use of
health information, and services. It involves wise decision-making skills and right attitudes to protect
oneself from fraudulent health products, information, and services.
✔ Health Consumer – a person who purchases health products, avails of health services, and uses data
and information about health products and services. Any person who inquires, buys, and receives health
information, products, and services is a health consumer.
✔ Wise Consumer – someone who applies correct decision-making skills, possesses the right attitudes,
and practices appropriate procedures in choosing and purchasing health information, products, and services.

As a wise consumer, you can benefit in many ways. Below are some of the benefits of being one:
1. Lessens the risks of harm and danger to one’s health and body. A wise consumer does not only spend
wisely on products and services but also benefits from the effects of the correct products and services used.
2. Saves money. Buying a fake health product and using it without experiencing the desired effects or
worse, having to suffer its ill effects and having to spend more money on a medication or solution to these.
3. Promotes Wellness. It is important to be discerning about the health information one receives, sees, or
hears. It is necessary to evaluate and carefully check if the information is true and correct.
4. Knows his or her rights and responsibilities. Knowing your rights and responsibilities will help protect
you from unscrupulous groups and individuals. As a wise consumer, you also know what to do in case your
rights are violated.
1. The right to basic needs. The state shall protect the consumer’s right to adequate supply of basic needs
such as food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education, and sanitation.
2. The right to be informed. It is the right of every consumer to receive information based on scientific and
medical findings. The law protects the consumer from dishonest or deceptive health information.
3. The right to safety. The consumer has the right to be protected from misleading information, and
fraudulent products and services that may be hazardous to his or her health and cause risks to his or her life.
4. The right to choose. One must have an option or choice and be able to compare and use as basis for
choosing the quality, place of manufacture, content or ingredients, size or weight, and price of the product
or service being considered.
5. The right to representation. The consumer has the right to express consumer interests in the formulation
and execution of government policies.
6. The right to redress. The consumer has the right to demand compensation for misinterpretation and
substandard and unsatisfactory products and services.
7. The right to consumer education. The consumer has the right to acquire knowledge and skills necessary
to be an informed customer.
8. The right to a healthy environment. Every consumer has the right to live and work in an environment
that is neither threatening nor dangerous and permits a life of dignity and well-being.
