Programme (JK to Grade 5), the Middle Years Programme (Grade 6 to Level II), Transitional Programme in Preparation
for the Diploma Programme (Level III) and the Diploma (Levels IV and V). Beginning in Level I, students also complete
Ontario Secondary School credits.
The following will explain the assessment procedures in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) both in regards to teachers’
assessment of student work and evaluation at the end of each term, which is documented in the report card.
In all grade levels at TFS, students’ work and progress is evaluated using a criterion referenced model. This is in line with
the assessment philosophies of both the IB and the Ontario Ministry of Education. In the MYP, each subject area
evaluates a student’s work and progress using four assessment criteria. Each criterion has eight achievement levels with
detailed and clear descriptors, which allow teachers to clearly articulate standards of achievement consistently for all
assessment tasks. It also allows students and parents, to receive clear feedback on their work and areas for
improvement. Assessment criteria and levelled descriptors for each course can be found on Google Classroom.
Using the evidence of achievement teachers gather throughout the year in grade 6 to Level II, a mark out of eight for
each criterion that represents the student’s most consistent level of achievement, is determined at the end of each
term. In Level III students will be assessed on the 4 criteria out of 7 as a transition to Diploma Programme type
evaluations. Each mark is determined by a teacher using their professional judgement. To determine a mark, teachers
consider a student’s most consistent level of achievement with an eye to most recent skills and competencies
demonstrated. Because a student’s achievement is not determined by comparing them to their peers, no class median
or average is reported. On the final June report card, students will receive an overall mark, using the IB 1 to 7 scale. For
credit courses, these marks will also be converted to a percentage grade.
In addition to the marks in the four criteria on the report card, teachers provide comments intended to highlight a
student’s areas of strength, emerging areas of strength and areas in need of attention. Teachers’ comments will provide
examples of assessed work and classroom observations as well as next steps for continued growth. You are encouraged
to carefully read comments in every course as these are important tools to understand your child's achievement level.
Comments in all courses can help to identify patterns and important indicators of a student’s strengths and areas for
growth.
