RECAP
In grade 10 we were a community research project where we had to do research within our school. What
we were supposed to do was to identify our school's biggest need. We were able to identify these needs
by conducting interviews where we interviewed a couple of school learners, see Figure 1.1. The learners
pointed out four needs which were a library, laboratory, garbage bins and toilets. After the interviews we
identified that the toilets had the highest percentage so we therefore concluded that they were our
biggest need. Our main plan was to build pit latrine toilets but we had to our contingency plan which is to
renew the toilets we have at school already due to some reasons.

Reason why we moved to our contingency plan:

Our main plan was to build pit latrine toilets by means of asking for donations from the nearby shops and
doing fundraising at school. We introduced our project plan to the school principal and he agreed. After
getting his approval we started asking for donations and doing fundraising but recently there was a SGB
meeting and we were informed that pit latrine toilets are no longer wanted in schools. So this is the
reason we have to move to our contingency plan which is to renew the toilets and bring awareness about
hygiene.

COLLECTION DATA TOOLS

● We held an interview and also handed out questionnaires to collect our data.

REASON WHY WE WANT TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM

The reason why we want to solve this problem is that we believe that it is a right of
every learner to have access to good sanitation and by renewing our old toilets it will
provide safety and healthy environment for learners.

Our target audience are the learners at school.

AIM
1. Our aim is to renew our school toilets and also bring awareness about hygiene.
GOALS
1. Do fundraising at school.
2. Collect all the materials needed.
3. Paint our toilets
4. Have a session where we educate learners especially girls about hygiene.

ACRONYM SMART

SPECIFIC
1. We are going to host a reading competition whereas each learner has to
contribute R2 to be part of the competition and we will also make 14 February a
casual day where each learner will contribute R5 in order to be allowed.
2. We will go to all the nearest shops and hardwares to ask for donations in the
form of money or materials.
3. We are going to renew our school toilets by painting and installing little garbage
bins in the girls toilets so that they can have a place to throw their sanitary
towels after use.
4. We will ask for permission from the principal to talk about this in the assembly.

MEASURABLE
1. The class prefect will collect the money and the class teacher will do a follow up
and make sure that everyone has paid.
2. Once in every week we will visit the schools nearest hardwares to ask for
donations of the materials we will be running short of.
3. We are going to make posters that will be hanged on the walls to remind the
learners about the ways to use their toilets.
4. We are going to make sure that the learners are always reminded about the
importance of hygiene by reminding them every Monday in the school assembly.
ACHIEVABLE
1. Our school learners are willing to cooperate.
2. We have a list of materials needed, see Figure 1.3.
3. It is achievable because there are school learners who volunteered to help paint
the toilets.
4. The principal supports us in everything so he will give us time.
REALISTIC
1. The school learners are willing to pay and it is an amount that every learner can
afford.
2. The people we asked donations are willing to donate because they say it's a good
way of giving back to the community.
3. Our toilets are not badly damaged they are repairable.
4. Our school learners are very despline and always pay attention to what they are
taught.

TIME BOND
1. On the 20th of January we started doing fundraising and we have collected
enough money to buy three buckets of paint.
2. On the 13th of January we started to ask for donations around Giyani in the form
of money or materials.
3. Before the end of May our project will be done because we will have purchased
all the materials we need.
4. This will be done after

SECTION 2: IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

RESOURCES THAT ARE ALREADY AVAILABLE

● 3 Buckets of paint (Exchanged cements for paint which was donated by Mabunda
hardware)
● Water
● Paint brushes (Purchased by the money we got from fundraising)

USEFUL RESOURCES STILL NEEDED

● Mirror
● Little garbage bins (For sanitary towels)
● Light bulbs
We are going to purchase the remaining resources by the remaining amount we have
that we got from fundraising.

STRENGTH RESOURCES OF OUR PROJECT

● Paint
● Light bulbs
● Little garbage bin

CHALLENGING RESOURCES

● Drawing paints
We are going to purchase our challenging resources by proposing challenges at school
where each learner will have to contribute R2.00 to enter. This challenge will be done
on the 29th of April 2022.

DETAILED PROCEDURE OF OUR IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

The resources we have pointed out above will help us renew our toilets and make them
hygienic again. This will also.

On the 12th of April 2022 Palesa Rikhotso met up with a painter to get adviced on what
kind of paints and paint brushes are needed to paint the whole toilets and how many
buckets of paint will be needed.

On the 20th of April we will go as a group to the nearest hardware to check the prices of
all the materials we will need and write them down. After that we will come back and
draw up a budget to see how much money we need to finish the project and how much
money we are still running short of.

On the 1st of may we will go and purchase all the materials we will need to do the
project.

Sithobile Baloyi will clear cut the transport that will be used to deliver the materials at
school. She will look for a person who will be willing to render free service or do it the
the lowest price.
PROJECT PLAN
1. Talk to a painter to advise about what kind of paints are needed to paint the
toilets and how many buckets will be needed to paint the whole toilets.
2. Identify available resources.
3. Identify challenging resources.
4. Do fundraising to purchase the resources we are still in in need of.
5. Visit the nearest hardware to check the prices of all the materials we will need
and note the down so that we will know how much is needed to finish the
project.
6. Draw a budget.
7. Purchase the goods.
8. We volunteers to help us paint.
9. Paint the toilets and insert garbage bins as well as the mirror inside.
10. Talk to all the girls in the school as a form of bringing awareness about hygiene.

CONTINGENCY PLAN
Our contingency plan is to buy garbage bins which will be placed in the girl’s toilets so
that they will not throw their sanitary towels inside the toilets and make them block.
We will use the money we have collected from doing donations and fundraisings to
purchase the bins. They are not that expensive so the money that we have made will be
sufficient.

SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR PLAN

After conducting interviews we came to a conclusion that we need new toilets. But we
have moved to our contingency plan due to the reasons we have provided above. The
toilets will be cleaned by the workers at school and they will also empty the garbage
bins which will be used to throw the sanitary towels and we will make sure of that by
checking the toilets first thing every Monday. Since this is our last year in high school we
will pass this responsibility to the president that will be elected next year to represent
the students. It will be their responsibility to make sure that the toilets are cleaned, the
bins are emptied and also that there is no water leakage and the paint is still in place.
Should it degrade they will have to report to the office do that it can be fixed as soon as
possible.

EVALUATION
This is a good plan because:
1. The will no longer be blockage in the toilets which results in learners going to the
forest which is unsafe.
2. We are going to use the best materials to renew the toilets.
3. We are going to create awareness and learners will learn how to use toilets in an
acceptable and hygienic way.

ABSTRACT

The basic need that we identified to be the most needed need in our school is good
sanitation. The toilets that we have at school keeps on blocking which cause water to be
always on the floor and the toilets get closed leaving the school learners with no toilets
to use and they are compelled to use the forest and it is not safe. We conducted a
research to find out what was causing the toilets to always block and we found out that
it was due to the girls throwing who threw their sanitary towels inside the toilet.

We asked for donations and also did fundraising to raise enough money we need to
finish the project. We will use this money to buy all the materials we are going to need
to do the project. After sitting down as a group we concluded that we are going to
renovate our school toilets to provide good sanitation and healthy environment for the
learners so that they do not have to use the forest anymore

SECTION C: TECHNICAL CRITERIA

REFLECTION

The challenge we are currently facing is bad time management. We are always busy and
sometimes forget we have a project to finish and this is the reason why we always
submit our project late.

APPENDICES
Figure 1.1
The interview was held in our school library at half past 10am September 13th 2020.
The question that they were asked was what do they think is the basic need in our
school and they also had to motivate their answer.
1st Learner
"I think we need a library because everyone have a right to learn"
2nd Learner
"Our basic need is garbage bins since we currently don't have bins so because of that
our school is littered."
3rd Learner
"Our basic need are the toilets, because the ones we have are old and they are always
leaking."
4th Learner
"It's's the toilets, because we are tired of going to the forest when there is no water in
the school"
5th Learner
"Our school is in need of proper toilets even because it's crucial to have healthy
environment .”
6th Learner
“Our need is the laboratory because as science learners it is compulsory to do
experiment not imagine them.”
7th Learner
“The basic need in our school is the library because everyone have a right to learn and it
is essential role in providing safety and 100 percent free educational resources.”
8th Learner
“Our basic need is garbage bins since we are currently not having bins because
unavailability of garbage disposals lead to pollution here at school.”
