Quarantine Curfew extended till

October first

The covid-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka is part of the ongoing worldwide

pandemic of
coronavirus disease 2019. The first case of the virus in Sri Lanka was
confirmed on January
2020.
Even Though Sri Lanka was successful in handling the first wave of the
pandemic, the

1|Page

government failure to handle the second and third waves of the pandemic
have caused a
spike in COVID-19 since November 2020.
Sri Lanka saw a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases after the relaxation of
health restrictions
during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April 2021. The highly contagious
Delta variant
has been responsible for the considerably high fatality rate in the country
since August.
As of August 2021, Sri Lanka became the country with the fourth-largest
daily deaths in the
world by population. For Sri Lankans dependent on a daily wage,
lockdowns have been
extremely difficult. Travel is often restricted and people are not permitted
to cross into
neighboring districts.
Some businesses imposed a voluntary lockdown for a period of 10 to 14
days during the
early parts of August when the government was adamant not to impose a
lockdown due to
the worsening situation of the economy.
The people who are in the lower class are worried and suffer from
poverty. Some unofficial
authorities say, if this lockdown continues till November then the death
amounts will increase
with the reason of poverty. When families that are already dependent on
casual, low paid, or

unstable work, lose their jobs or are forced to isolate because of the
coronavirus outbreak,
they have little to fall back on. They have few savings, but often debts, and
cannot afford to
stockpile food and other necessities. A break in income can have
devastating
consequences. For families in poverty, missing work directly relates to
missing meals,
making it hard to comply with government and health advice However, the
government has exceeded the quarantine curfew period till 1st of October
2021.

Give priority to vaccination

Viruses may not
amount to ‘life’ as we
know but they have
one characteristic in
common with higher
life forms they
replicate.
But they cannot do
this on their own, so
they invade and
attach to ‘host’ cells in other organisms, where they make copies
themselves. They also have another feature - they evolve, or rather
mutate- evolution, but in real time. With each mutation, a virus generally
gets more powerful, more transmissible and more evasive. They are
among the most adaptable of organisms, if one can call them that.
The coronavirus is no exception. Within just 18 months, it has undergone
many mutations. The resulting ‘new’ viruses are called variants. New
variants were identified in the UK, Brazil, India and several other
countries.
Most of these variants are more transmissible and more virulent than the
original coronavirus, but scientists have been particularly alarmed by the
delta variant, which was originally reported from India.
Now the WHO has confirmed the worst fears of health planners with this
declaration that the highly contagious delta variant is the fastest and
fittest coronavirus strain yet. Having already spread to around 90
countries including Sri Lanka, it is certainly looking for more hosts to
attach to and replicate rapidly. Worse, delta itself has mutated further to
become delta plus. No variant has really found the optimal combination of
high transmissibility and lethality, but Delta is the most, fastest and fittest
of those virus variants, according to WHO officials. It is in this context that

4|Page
Ceylon today

many countries are debating about the real possibility of needing a third
dose or a ‘booster shot’ against the Delta variant.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa,

who has taken a keen interest
in ensuring that all Sri Lankans
are vaccinated, has urged
health authorities to consider
this possibility seriously and
place orders swiftly should the
need arise. A quick decision on
this matter will also help avoid
spreading Delta variants in the
country.
The vaccination centers have been appointed in all districts island wide.
Several vaccines have been introduced as Pfizer, Astra Zeneca, Modena in
two doses.
The aim should be to vaccinate all eligible categories of persons possibly
at least by the first quarter of 2022. Lockdowns can keep the disease from
spreading far and wide, but it is not a permanent solution. Vaccination is,
and attention must be focused firmly on that aspect of Covid prevention.

Ceylon today

At present the COVID-19 pandemic has affected school education

worldwide, most governments around the world have temporarily closed
schools in order to maintain the spread of COVID-19 disease. But these
closures impact students, teachers and families around the world.

Moreover, schools are the place where children learn social skills through
our interactions with teachers, staff and other students. When school
closes, many children miss out on social contact that is essential to
learning and development.

Further, in schools’ children make their own friends with other children
and they cooperate with different teachers and they spend more time with
their peers in school. But during this pandemic situation they are missing
those interactions with others, children are just staying at home, they are
missing such a happy and valuable time period they spend in their
schools.

❖ Children Mental Health

7|Page
Ceylon today

During the past few days children function well at home, in school and in
their communities and have greater chances of living a happy and
successful life. But during the present situation that arises in the country
due to the pandemic children are being locked in households in order to
avoid social interaction.
This caused a severe impact on children's mental health due to not
interacting with others. Further, this brought a complex challenge on a
child's mental health which led to grief, fear, uncertainty, social isolation
and also children losing bonds between their friends.

The mental health of millions of children worldwide has been put at risk
during COVID-19 pandemic. More than 330 million students have been
stuck at home. Although school academic activities are conducted via
online, they are receiving only the knowledge on the education side, but
the interaction and other important things are missing by children.

❖ How can parents control child's Mental

health?

9|Page
Ceylon today

Although during these pandemic parents are also under stress. But it's
very important to handle their own children as they are spending more
time at home in the present situation.
So, being a parent is a daily challenge and faced with realities of COVID-19
social distancing and self-quarantine it may be a struggle for parents. The
best way to help their children is to firstly take care of themselves.

It is more important to be calm and proactive in the conversation between

children and parents. Their emotions will change regularly and parents
need to show them that's okay.
Moreover, parents can spend more time with their children by engaging
them in creative activities, such as playing and drawing to help them
express and communicate any negative feelings they may be expressing

in a safe and supportive environment. This may help children to find

positive ways to express difficult feelings such as anger, fear or sadness.

WHY WAS THE GREAT WALL?

OF CHINA BUILT?

The Great Wall of China, at 6400 km is the longest structure in history and
was built entirely by hand, under the direction of the government of the
Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644) to protect China’s borders from the threat of a
Mongol invasion. The wall crosses northern china between the east coast
and north-central china.
Most of what remains and is now known as the Great Wall dates from the
late 5th century. The government believed that a fortified wall could act as
a defense against incursions from their hostile neighbors. Although it is an
outstanding achievement, it would never have protected China from a
concerted and major attack. It remains one of the modern wonders of the
world.

PHAROS OF ALEXANDRIA
The pharos or lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the seven wonders of
the ancient world. It was located on the island of pharos in the harbor of
Alexandria, Egypt.

The Pharos was built in the 3rd century B.C its construction was initiated
by Ptolemy Soter, a commander of Alexander the Great in 290 B.C. Soter
did not live to see the Lighthouse completed. His son Ptolemy
Philadelphus completed it and dedicated the Lighthouse to Ptolemy Soter
and his wife
Berenice. The
Pharos was built to
guide ships safely
to the harbour of
Alexandria. It was
the first Lighthouse
in the world and
the last of the
ancient wonders to
be destroyed
(around1400A.D.).

Structure
Scientists have estimated the Pharos to have been almost 117m tall. It was
almost equivalent to a modern day 40-storey building. The construction of
the great lighthouse happened in three stages. The lowest segment of the
Pharos was around 55.9m high. The middle segment was octagonal in
shape. It was 18m wide and 27m high. The third segment was circular and
it was 7.3m high. A long-vaulted ramp led the entrance of the lighthouse

23 | P a g e
Ceylon today

and a spiral staircase led up to the chambers above. The stairs were used
to carry fuel to the top, where fire burned at night to show the way to the
harbor. During the day a mirror at the top reflected sunlight and guided
the ships ashore.

History
The pharos stood for almost seventeen centuries until it was destroyed by
two strong earthquakes in the 14th century. On 8 August 1303, a violent
earthquake shook the eastern Mediterranean basin and destroyed the
lighthouse to a great extent. It was struck by another strong earthquake in
1323 and the lighthouse collapsed in 1326. In 1480, Sultan Qaitbayan, an
Egyptain Sultan, decide to build an Islamic fortress to strengthen the
defense of Alexandria. He built the fort on the same spot, where once the
great lighthouse stood. Sultan Qaitbayan used the fallen stone and marble
of the Lighthouse to build the fort

FOOD ON THE GO
You rush home from school with only minutes to eat, wash and change,
and get ready for your tuition class. There is no time to sit down at the
dining table and enjoy a meal of rice and curry, so what do you eat? ‘Fast
food’ it has to be!
Do you know what fast food is? Any food that you buy in a ready or almost
ready state can be defined as fast food. You may have bought it from an
upmarket food court, a takeaway, a snack bar, a van on the street or from
the nearby shop. Most food in supermarkets such as the pre-cooked or
frozen meals that can be consumed after being re-heated for five minutes
are also ‘fast food’.

Although fast food or ‘junk food’ as it is sometimes called is generally

considered as an unhealthy option, there’s no reason why it can’t be as
nutritious and healthy as any other food.

25 | P a g e
Ceylon today

The food you buy from fast food restaurants may not really be any worse
for you than food prepared at home as long as you choose the healthy
options. You could choose a pizza topped with meat, vegetables and
cheese or a sandwich made with whole meal bread, tuna and cucumber.
These make delicious snacks as well as being full of goodness.
Fast food has a bad reputation due to the fact that much of the fast food in
the market is highly processed. It is usually high in fat and low in fiber,
and lacks vitamins and minerals.
Junk food contains too much of the wrong things, and too little of the right
nutrients. But it won’t do you much harm if you don’t eat it all the time.
Worse than hamburgers, fried chicken or fries that are generally termed
junk food are the foods laden with sugar, salt and fat. These include cakes,
sweets, ice-creams, sweet biscuits, fizzy drinks and fried snacks.
If you think of fast food as food which can be eaten at any time and at any
place, then it can just as well be some fruits.
It could be a banana, an orange, an apple, a slice of water melon or a piece
of cheese or a cup of yoghurt. All these are healthy and fast foods.
They are quick and convenient food. Half a liter of milk has more protein
than 100 grams of meat. Milk is certainly a fast food, but it is not junk food.
So, although it may be easier to pick the ‘wrong’ food, which is easily
available, keep in mind that nature’s fast food store can also cope with
most of your demands. Another factor to keep in mind is that this food is
cheaper, healthier than junk food and more environment friendly as it is
natural.

Make your own PIZZA @

HOME SWEET HOME.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED:
➢ For pizza dough.
• 260g flour
• 1 tsp (tea spoon) yeast
• ½ cup warm water
• ½ tsp salt
• 1 tsp sugar
• 1 tbsp (table spoon) olive oil or normal oil

➢ For topping.
• Red & yellow bell pepper or capsicum
• 10 Black olives
• 1 tomato
• 3-4 rings B-onion
• Sauce
• Mayonnaise
• Mozzarella cheese

METHOD:
Mix yeast and sugar with a ½ cup of warm water and stir it well, and let
the yeast rise. Then take a bowl and add flour, olive oil, salt and the yeast
mixture and kneed the flour until you get a nice smooth dough. (add water
as you require). Make sure the dough is very stretchy. After making a

28 | P a g e
Ceylon today

stretchy dough, let the dough double in size by covering it up by a wet

cloth or by polythene for around 1 hour.
Then remove the cloth from the dough and make small balls out of the
dough and flatten it on a board. Then using your pads of the finger tips
make the crust around the edges of the dough, and expand the dough to
the size of your pan. Afterwards, take the flatten dough to your hand and
flip it around 4 times to expand the dough.
• There are many ways to expand the dough but this is the easiest. Try
to do this using your hands without using a roller.
• Shaping the pizza with the method told before, helps make it even
softer.
After that add, carefully transfer the pizza to the pan. (Tip: If you want a
crispier pizza base, use a folk and poke hole on it.)
Lastly, add the toppings and bake it.

❖ The toppings for the pizza can be based on your preference. The
toppings I used is mentioned above in the ingredients.

Firstly, mix the sauce and mayonnaise together and apply it on the
pizza as the first layer. Then add some scraped mozzarella cheese
and add the vegetables mentioned above (sliced red and yellow

29 | P a g e

pepper bell, tomato) and spread the sliced olives (These olives have
lots of fiber which helps in digestion process) randomly.
Additionally, you can even add roasted chicken, beef, or any meat on
top. At the end add some onion rings, some scraped mozzarella
cheese and sauce to feel the Aroma of the pizza.

Finally, keep the pizza in 225 degrees Celsius preheated oven for 11-
15 minutes to bake and then you can serve it to your loved one’s
before letting the pizza and cheese to dry out.

CRISTIANO RONALDO SCORES TWO GOALS ON

HIS RETURN TO MANCHESTER UNITED

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals in his first game against Manchester
United in the Premier League against Newcastle United on Saturday
The Portuguese superstar joined the club again from Juventus this
summer. He scored 118 goals in 292 games with Manchester United in the
previous six years, then moved to Real Madrid in 2009. In the first half of
his second debut, the 36-year-old delighted the home fans, tapping home
a rebounded shot from Manchester United superstar youngster Mason
Greenwood. In true Ronaldo form, he ran to the Old Trafford corner to
perform his now-famous
"Siuuuu" celebration.
His debut took a turn after
the halftime break, however,
as Javier Manquillo
equalized for Newcastle
after a swift counterattack.
However, Ronaldo showed
why he was brought back to
33 | P a g e

Manchester, and the second goal of the game again highlighted United
with a powerful low end. Ronaldo’s Portugal teammate Bruno Fernandes
extended Manchester United's lead with a thunderbolt of a strike from
about 30 yards out from goal before Jesse Lingard scored to make it 4-1.
Ronaldo said he was "super nervous" before making his first appearance
back at the club. "I didn't expect to score two goals. I expect one but not
two. I have to appreciate the fans and what they did to me today. I feel so
proud for that," he told BBC Sport afterwards. "It is unbelievable. When I
started the game, I was so nervous, I swear. It is normally because I did
not expect that they would sing my name all game. I was very nervous but
maybe I didn't show but I was. The reception is incredible but I am here to
win games and help the team.
"It was unbelievable moment. I was super nervous and was thinking last
night that I wanted to play well and show I was still capable of helping the
team. This club is unbelievable and I am so proud. I am going to give
everything to make them proud of me.
"Everyone knows the football in England is different than in any part of the
world and to be honest it is the most special one. I arrived here at 18 and
they treated my unbelievable and that is why I am back."
