ABSTRACT

Korean dramas have an influence in changing the lifestyle and grammar of the productive generation
of generation Z (ages 6-25 years). With the development of the times accompanied by the rapid
development of technology, this makes many outside cultures that enter and be studied by generation
Z which is the modern generation and develops with technology. One example of culture that is
popular among generation Z is Korean drama. The popular Korean drama made changes in behavior
and grammar in Indonesian generation Z citizens. This article focuses on the influence of Korean
dramas in behavior and grammatical changes as well as their impact on generation Z which is the
productive age in Indonesia. From the topic, the questions arise about how the influence of Korean
dramas in affecting the citizens of Generation Z who have great potential in building and preserving
local culture, did the popular era of Korean drama cause the emergence of new lifestyles and language
styles among this generation? Is the culture in Korean dramas positive and more educational for
generation Z than local dramas? The study used qualitative methods using interactive qualitative
methods with questionnaires and interviews as data collection techniques. The data obtained is further
analyzed descriptively and presented in table form. From the results of research that has been done, it
was found that Korean dramas do influence generation Z citizens to have a lifestyle and language
style as in Korean dramas. The presence of bad behavior and new grammar that comes in from
Korean dramas that are used as a lifestyle lead to the need for solutions to prevent generation Z who
dislike culture and preserve local culture and language. There needs to be good socialization so that
the citizens of Generation Z do not drift in the Korean wave.As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic,
data collection is entirely done online through google form and whatsapp, therefore, the results of the
data obtained are not as good as data collection carried out face-to-face.

INTRODUCTION

The diversity of forms and types of literary works is certainly familiar in everyday life.In one
moment of our lives, there will always be a close bond in literature. In Lamafane's opinion, drama is "a
genre of literary works in the form of essays that depict or illustrate the realities of human life,
character, and behavior in which the stories in which the stories are conveyed through role and
dialogue" (11).There are many kinds of dramas with the form of presentation of the play, can also be
varied if you see where the drama was first published. One drama that has many fans is a drama from
ginseng country, which is a Korean drama or commonly abbreviated as drakor. According to Apriliani
et al, Korean popular culture first rose in the Asian region until it spread throughout the world
(108).Korean dramas were first broadcast in Indonesia in the moments after the world cup between
South Korea and Japan in 2002. The moment was used by television stations to introduce Korean
Drama which at that time was relatively cheaper at that time compared to other Asian series, such as
Japanese Dramas.Since then, indonesian people began to know and put their tendency towards Korean
Drama.

The emergence of Korean dramas finally brought its own impact in the Indonesian market,
such as the emergence of korean artists' distinctive dress styles, Korean-style makeup, the opening of
various South Korean dining places, and Korean trinkets until the proliferation of Korean language
courses, Putri et al.(71). With the proliferation of Korean language courses in Indonesia at this time, it
certainly has an impact on the use of everyday language, especially among generation Z south Korean
cultural connoisseurs.

Watching Korean dramas can also have an impact on the daily behavior of generation
Z.Nafida argues that behavior is a human act or activity that includes many things including reading,
walking, crying, laughing and so on (12). The behavior of generation Z who watch Korean dramas
will be different from those who do not watch Korean dramas.Generation Z who love Korean dramas
will behave like Koreans. In this case, researchers want to examine the influence that Korean drama
culture has on adolescent attitudes so as to change their thinking and attitudes to continue to consume
this popular culture. In this study, we used axiological theory to examine the morals that occur in
human life and also to give direction to humans to be better. With this axiology study we will examine
the behavior and grammar of generation Z affected by the Korean Wave from Korean dramas.

The drafting is because the culture of watching Korean dramas is currently on the rise and is
considered to dominate generation Z than watching local dramas. The main reason why Korean
dramas are in high demand is because the storyline is interesting and able to make the audience feel
the emotions and Korean culture inherent in the drama. Korean dramas that have many genres and
thick Korean culture make generation Z affected both behaviorally and grammatically. Therefore, the
purpose of writing this paper is to review and analyze changes in the behavior and grammar of
generation Z.

It is hoped that the results of this study can be useful for the community as a contribution of
thought to increase public knowledge about popular culture, its role and benefits. In addition, the
benefit of this study is that Korean dramas can be studied for their influence on society based on
adolescent attitudes towards the influence of the Korean Wave today. How korean wave in particular
K-Drama can attract teenagers to consume and apply it in their lifestyle. The results of this research
can later be applied to develop indigenous Indonesian culture through the processing and utilization of
Korean culture.
METHOD

The method used in this research is interactive qualitative. The interactive qualitative method
is an in-depth study using data collection techniques directly from people in the environment studied
so that we can obtain more specific and more in-depth results on the influence of Korean drama on the
behavior and grammar of generation Z in Indonesia.

The data collection methods that will be used in this study are questionnaire survey methods
and interviews. Questionnaires are a technique of collecting larger amounts of data that is done by
sending a list of questions to respondents and respondents answer questions that have been provided
directly on questionnaires distributed online.

The data collection techniques we use are questionnaires and interviews. The focus of this
study is respondents to generation Z citizens aged 6-25 years and Indonesian nationals. The target of
our respondents is 50 people. We were able to deduce how much influence Korean dramas had on
generation Z's behavior and grammar through how far our respondents understood and used lifestyles
and language styles as in Korean dramas. By using questionnaire data collection techniques are
expected to collect data quickly with the direction of questions that are easy to direct. So that closed-
form questionnaires used can be used to increase the validity and reliability of the data.

To complete the data that has been obtained from the respondents, further data collection is
carried out through interviews. Then, for data analysis techniques that we use is a descriptive analysis
technique where the results of answers from respondents will be analyzed and presented using
descriptive tables.

We conducted a survey with the final results of 57 respondents of Generation Z citizens in Indonesia,
following the respondent chart from the results of the survey we conducted:
Generation Z is the current generation and is the productive generation of Indonesia, generation Z in
2021 has an age of 6-25 years. Based on the age graph in the picture listed, of our 57 respondents the
majority are aged 19, 20, and 21 years.

Based on the results of a survey we conducted to generation Z in Indonesia, the majority of

our 57 respondents came from Surabaya and Blitar.

We can see from table 2 of the survey results that the question 'Have you ever changed the
vocabulary of Indonesian to Korean (Example: Thank you for being kamsahamnida, hello/good
morning to annyeonghaseyo)?' The context of generation Z's response to the use of Korean grammar
showed that 70.2% or 40 people had changed Indonesian vocabulary to Korean, while 29.8% or 17
others had never changed Indonesian vocabulary to Korean. In table 2 the author asks the question
'Are you very fond of these foods? (Kimchi, Tteokbokki, Jajangmyeon)' and from our questionnaire
data showed that 28.1% (16) people were very fond of the food, while 47.4% (14) of others were just
moderate, and 24.6% (11) people did not like the food.

In table 2 the writers also asked the question 'In your personal opinion, is Korean drama better
and more positive than Indonesian drama?' and 80.7% (46) answered yes which means that Korean
dramas have a more positive impact than Indonesian dramas. In table 2 and the fourth question, the
author asks the question 'In your opinion, does Korean drama have any influence on behavior and
grammar in generation z? (Birth 1996-2010)' and 91.2% (52) of our respondents agreed that Korean
dramas have an influence on behavior and grammar in generation Z in Indonesia.

DISCUSSION

Based on the results of existing research, it was found that at least 70.2% or 40 out of 57
respondents had changed Indonesian vocabulary to Korean in everyday life, such as: thank you for
being kamsahamnida, hello /good morning to annyeonghaseyo). In fact, 29.8% of all respondents
admitted to never changing Indonesian vocabulary to Korean. From these findings, it is seen that the
replacement of Indonesian vocabulary into Korean has become a considerable phenomenon for
generation Z in Indonesia.

- Korean drama has an influence on the behavior and grammar of generation Z in

Indonesia
From the results of the above research, it can be concluded that most respondents admitted
that Korean drama does have an influence on the behavior and grammar of generation Z in
Indonesia. In terms of behavior, Korean dramas exert an influence that makes generation Z want to
imitate what they have watched in the Korean drama. Not only in behavior, in fact the grammar of
generation z in Indonesia also began to change as they watched Korean dramas. Most generation Z in
Indonesia converted some of Indonesian vocabulary into Korean.

- Korean dramas have a major impact on Generation Z in Indonesia related to the fading
of the behavior and grammar of generation Z

The fading of a behavior and grammar of the homeland that has been passed down to
generation Z has a bad impact on Indonesia, such as the loss of the nation's characteristics because it
has been displaced by another culture, one of which is the impact of Korean Drama. Most respondents
replied that as generation Z watch Korean dramas, if they always use Indonesian vocabulary that is
replaced with Korean, they will forget how to behave and grammar that is good and correct in
accordance with the Indonesian nation.

- Prevention of adverse effects caused by Korean Drama

The most effective way in accordance with the answers of the respondents is to start from
yourself. They as generation Z Indonesia must be able to filter out what is good and bad. They should
start reducing in watching Korean dramas according to the needs of each individual. With self-
awareness in reducing watching Korean dramas, it is certain that the adverse effects caused by Korean
dramas will decrease and over time will fade.

- Restrictions or blocking of Korean drama by the government is not effective

Restrictions or blocking is not effective if done by the government because the right thing to
do is from self-awareness as generation Z in Indonesia. This awareness must be able to make us
understand what is good and bad. We have to take the positive side and throw away the bad effects
that Korean dramas have had. And also we must fill our free time by learning the culture that
characterizes our nation and preserving it internationally.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings and discussions above, it can be concluded that Korean dramas can change the
behavior and grammar of generation Z in Indonesia. It cannot be denied that Korean dramas do have a
bad impact on generation Z in Indonesia, not only changed behavior but grammar also changed due to
the impact of Korean dramas. These impacts include: the replacement of vocabulary Indonesian into
Korean by generation Z in Indonesia after watching Korean dramas, the fading of behavior that shows
the love of the Indonesian. Declining use of good and correct Indonesian by generation Z in
Indonesia. To overcome the negative impact that can be caused by Korean dramas, efforts that can be
done as an initial prevention are planting a love of the homeland that always filters the outside culture
and also parents should guide their children not to like to watch Korean dramas and instead watch
Indonesian literary works so that they can be preserved. While the efforts that can be done if the
impact has occurred are restrictions on watching Korean dramas that are done with self-awareness in
managing time and instead fill that time by learning Indonesian cultures so that the behavior and
grammar of generation Z in Indonesia does not change with the current globalization. Due to the
pandemic, the data collection process was carried out online via Google Forms and WhatsApp.
Therefore, the data obtained is not as good as the data collected face-to-face.
