the house of Learner B. Finally, What is asked in the problem?
you traveled home 4 kilometers
in 30 minutes. What was your
average speed in kilometers per
hour?
What is asked in the problem?
- It is my average speed in kilometers per hour.
-TB-SuperM You’re right! What are the given facts?

Haisa -2 hours in 20 km
-1 hour and 30 minutes in 12 km
-30 minutes in 4 km
Super M
Great! Now, let’s plan.

To get the average speed in km per hour, we

need to make the unit measurements for time the
same by converting them.

-We just retain 2 hours in 20 km

-Then, we convert the 30 minutes in the 1 hour
and 30 minutes 12 km.
So,
30 minutes times 1 hour over 60 minutes, since
there are 60 minutes in one hour. Cancel the unit
measurement minutes. So, we get 30 over 60.
To simplify this, we use their greatest common
factor which is 30. Thirty divided by 30 is 1 and
60 divided by 30 is 2. To make it decimal, we
divide numerator by the denominator. So 1
divided by to gives 0.5 hour. Therefore, we now
have 1 plus 0.5 is 1.5 hour in 12 km.
The same with the third given, 30 minutes in 4
km. Thirty minutes is equal to 0.5 hour. Therefore
the third given is 0.5 hour in 4 km.

TB Haisa Whoa! That’s amazing!

TB Super M Not so fast… We still have to form the number
sentence according to its formula,
Average Speed equals total distance over total
time. Therefore, the number sentence is Average
speed equals 20 km plus 12 km plus 4 km over 2
hours plus 1.5 hours plus 0.5 hour.
TB Haisa Ohh so I just have to do addition and division to
solve the problem!

What are we waiting for? Let us solve the

problem.
Tb nightmare I don’t think you can solve it!

Super M Don’t listen to her. I know you can make it!
GFX: GPS with distance and time VO:
To visualize our problem, let us make an
illustration.
Average Speed equals total distance over total
time.
Average speed equals 20 km plus 12 km plus 4
km over 2 hours plus 1.5 hours plus 0.5 hours.
Average speed equals 36 km over 4 hours.

Haisa So, the answer is 9.

Super M Oops! Remember, don’t forget to put the correct
unit of measurement. Therefore, the Average
speed is 9 km per hour.
Haisa Awesome! Its so easy!
Tb nightmare No way! I cant believe it!
Super M You must!
