Organizing the Preparation Outline for Informative Speech

Title/Topic: Causes and effect of depression among students

General Purpose : To inform about the negative causes and effect of depression among student
Central Idea: Depression among students can be dangerous for their mental health
(Thesis Statement) : A complete statement that summarizes your
speech/outline in one sentence. It should clearly sum up all
your main points.

In major depression, having a bad relationship with parents can lead the students to
depression that can affect lack of motivation and behavior changing.

INTRODUCTION

I. (Attention Getter) This could be a story or anything you know will GRAB your
audience's attention.

When thinking of teenagers in today’s society the first thing that comes to mind is
unresponsible, being careless, laughter and having fun times and memories. When it all
comes down to it, if you were to ask a teen if that statement is correct, they would most
likely respond with “the reality stated is a fairytale’. What is adolescent depression you may
ask? It is a very serious mental health problem that can cause a feeling of sadness and loss
of interest in activities.

II. (Credibility Statement) Answer the question "Why should we listen to YOU?"
Give information or some references that shows that you know what you are talking about.
This could be a topic that you had done a lot of research on, your first-hand experience, or a
topic you are an expert in, etc.

According to the national institute of mental health 11.3% of teenagers suffer from chronic
depression. Many people confuse this mental illness with regular sadness or maybe even
laziness. Depression goes further than sadness to the point of a bad mental health issue that
could interfere with the sufferer’s ability to function in their everyday lives.

III. (Background of Topic) Tell your audience what the topic is all about. This is also
where you define certain terminologies or abbreviations eg. Flipped classroom / ENT

Depression in students isn’t uncommon, it’s important to take it seriously. Depression can
impact nearly every area of your life — from studying and classes to your social life. In
some cases, depression can also cause suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm.

IV. (Relevancy Statement) Tell your audience how your topic is relevant to them. Depression
is a huge critical psychological concern worldwide because of high prevalence rates, the
chronic nature of the condition and difficult treatment and recovery. It has been positioned as
one of the four ranked major illnesses, due to the utmost burden for individuals, families, and
society.

V. (Preview) Briefly reveal your topic and state what your main points will be.
What I’m going to talk is causes and effect of depression among the students. What could
be causing your depression? There are a number of factors that might contribute to
developing depression.

INTERNAL PREVIEW: having a bad relationship with parents

A. (SUPPORTING DETAIL 1) Parent relationships can substantially affect mental health,

behavior and even physical health
1. (SUB-DETAIL) Family plays a really important role for students in order to encourage
students to do well in their studies and to not affect their mental health that can lead to
depression.
2. (SUB-DETAIL) Numerous studies have shown that social relationships, particularly family
relationships, can have both long- and short-term effects on one’s mental health.
a. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) High school dropout rates are twice as high with kids from broken
homes than kids with families still together. Studies also show that kids with divorced parents
have lower test scores than kids with parents who are still married.
b. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) The news of divorce can be a shock. Some kids may not be able to
handle change as well as others. And it depends on how the parents communicate it with the kids
and with each other.
i. (Sub-sub-sub detail) The pressures of divorce such as (picking sides, listening to fights, and
negative comments about the other parent) could create psychological problems for the kids. Anxiety,
depression, speech defects, and stress are all common occurrences when it comes to divorce. These
symptoms distract kids from their schooling, making it more difficult to focus on school work.

B. (SUPPORTING DETAIL 2) Families affect children’s learning behaviors and academic

achievement in important ways, as they are the primary and most significant environments that the
children are exposed to.
1. (SUB-DETAIL) Deficient parents hurt their children more by omission than by commission.
Frequently, chronic mental illness contributes to parental inadequacy. This led to a serious depression
when children are robbed of their own childhood then tend to ignore their own needs and feelings
which is really bad for their mental health.
2. (SUB-DETAIL) Unlike deficient parents described above, controlling parents are often driven
by a fear of becoming unnecessary things to their children. This makes the children feel
resentful, powerless and inadequate. Controlling parents can make their children feel very
depressed. For example, whenever their children want to hangout with their friends the parents
want to go along with the children which can be very uncomfortable to them.
a. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) Moreover, these deficient and strict parents tend to not care about their
children’s studies. Whenever students go to school or college, they will feel demotivated to focus
on their studies.
b. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) Other than that, they will feel that their parents do not care whether they get
good or bad marks in examinations. This is the sign of overthinking which leads to minor depression

i. (Sub-sub-sub detail) Last but not least, having unsupportive parents can really affect a student's
mental health. This is because whenever students have problems they can't share or tell their
parents. Even if the students wanted to share good news , it won’t work if they’re having
unsupportive parents.
C. (INTERNAL SUMMARY) In other words, these prove that parents' relationship is the main cause
of depression among students. For students, parents are someone they value a lot. If you ask what their
main reason for success in studies is, I guarantee most of the students will say that they want to succeed
in studies for their parents. So when the parents are not giving their full support this can lead to various
negative impacts such as depression. Parents should be a role model and try to avoid being the main
cause that affects students' mental health.

INTERNAL PREVIEW: Lack of motivation

A. (SUPPORTING DETAIL 1) Depressed children lose interest in all the things they care about the
most.
1. (SUB-DETAIL) One of the first things to dwindle is schoolwork motivation, which is also not
among the things that young people care about the most. Lack of commitment and motivation
contributes to inefficiency, resulting in lower grades

2. (SUB-DETAIL) Low motivation is detrimental personally as well as professionally. Relationships

may deteriorate because they don’t have the energy to connect with others. That same low energy makes
it hard to do basic self care, such as exercising, eating well and getting enough sleep, which can lead to
mental and physical health issues.

a.(SUB-SUB DETAIL) Because of that, it will make them feel stressed. It can also wear you down.
When the body produces excessive amounts of the cortisol hormone in response to stress, it can cause
exhaustion. In turn, it can lower levels of dopamine and serotonin.
b. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) Plus, when you’re already feeling unmotivated, the stress from falling behind
on tasks may intensify the lack of motivation. You simply lack the will to function. It’s easy to fall
into the trap of feeling worthless or hopeless when you lose motivation.

i. (Sub-sub-sub detail) It will also affect their study performance. It's often difficult to fulfill students'
normal obligations. Then, falling behind on their obligations can make them feel even worse.

B. (SUPPORTING DETAIL 2) Behavior changing

1. (SUB-DETAIL) the students will show their distress in the form of external traits, like
aggression, hostility, non-compliance dan dysphoria
2. (SUB-DETAIL) for some students even going out people may find themselves refusing
invitations or avoid socializing.

a. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) Confusion and delirium refer to a disturbance of consciousness. That is, people
are less aware of their environment and depending on the cause, may be excessively agitated and
belligerent or drowsy and sluggish

b. (SUB-SUB DETAIL) Disorganized speech refers to speech that does not contain the expected
logical connections between thoughts or between questions and answers. For example, people may
jump from one topic to another without ever finishing a thought. The topics may be slightly related
or entirely unrelated

i. (Sub-sub-sub detail) In other cases, people respond to simple questions with long, rambling answers,
full of irrelevant detail. Answers may be illogical or completely incoherent.

C. (INTERNAL SUMMARY) Now we know the effects that can happen in students’ life if they are
having depression.

Follow the same format that you used for the first main point.

moving on to another)
CONCLUSION

I. (Concluding Statement) In conclusion, having bad relationships with parents, lack of motivation and
behavior changing are the examples of cause and effect of depression among students that I can give as
my points. We need to help and overcome these causes and effects because this is so important for their
mental health as well. Most students don't want to believe that something is wrong with them so they
stay in a state of denial and suffer alone. This feeling those students go through when they don't reach
out are the first steps that start to affect students emotionally.
II. (Memorable Closing Statement) In my opinion, we need to overlook their surroundings. Make
sure their relationship between their parents is good and don't have any problems with each other.
Overall, I believe this source is valuable to prevent the largest problem among students which is
depression.

Leave your audience with something to think about. A memorable concluding remark that refers
to the PREVIEW (Central Idea) creates an opportunity to remind your audience of your MAIN
POINTS

Include in your outline complete citations (using APA format) of the sources you
used. You will also cite the sources in your speech.

• Separate your points (for Informative Speech, you will write about 2 different
graphs/tables) Keep the same pattern of wording for the Main Points
• Balance the amount of length & time devoted to both points
• Write your outline in full sentences (not in fragments)
• Make sure to state where your information came from, and/or who said it. In other
words, CITE YOUR SOURCES IN YOUR SPEECH
• Sources could be books, book chapters, magazine/newspaper articles, interviews with
expert or knowledgeable individuals, web sites, or any other viable Internet
sources or electronic media
• Examples you use to support your points can be personal experiences • Use connectives
throughout your speech (know what transitions, internal previews, internal summaries,
and signposts are, and when to use them) • An outline format uses Roman numerals,
letters and numbers to organize the main points and subordinate details
The most general information begins at the left with each specific group of details indented the right. The
relationship between details is carried out through the indentation.
