EXERCISE

Apply Polya’s Strategy to solve the following problems.

1. Twenty-four points are placed around a circle. A line segment is drawn between each pair of
points. How many line segments are drawn?

Step 1: Understand the problem.

There are 24 points around the circle and a line signment drawn between pairs so how many line
signments are drawn without repetition.

Step 1: Understand the problem.

We are looking for the number girls in first grade where girls is 36 more than boys, and we will let
Y to be the number of boys while X is the number of girls

Step 2: Devise a plan (translate).

Eq. 1 the number of boys

y+(y+36)=364

Eq.2 the number of girls

y+x=364

Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).

m
→ 2y+36=364 → 2y=364-36 → 2y=328 → 2y/2 = 328/2 → y= 164, the

If we add 164 and 200 we get the total number of students 364 and if we subtract a 164 and 200
we get the 36 difference between girls and boys student where girls is 36 more then boys
ed d

So the final answer is 200, the total number of girls student in first grade

Step 2: Devise a plan (translate).

Let be the number of handshake made H

H n= n(n-1)/2

Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).

Let’s substitute H with the number of people which is 8
H8=8⋅(8-1)=28, handshake were made
