500 37%
Narration Script:
Before we begin it is important to know why understanding the condition codes matters. Every firearm owner should know and be able to explain what
condition their firearm is in at all times for safety purposes and general awareness. If you handle a gun or hand a gun to anyone you should be able to
know/articulate the condition in order to avoid negligent discharge (ND). According to the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, 500 people die from
unintentional firearm injuries each year. That is more than 1 per day. Unintentional firearm injuries account for 37% of non fatal firearm injuries.
Understanding the weapons conditions codes is essential to avoiding unintentional incidents.

Lesson 1:
Rule 1: TREAT
Estimated Time:
Narration Script:
In the first lesson you will learn the first universal safety rule and why it is important. This lesson should take approximately
___ minutes to complete.
TREAT!
Narration Script:
The first universal safety rule is Treat every firearm as if it were loaded. This means you should never grab and pull the
trigger, aim at anyone, or relax posture because you think its empty. Anytime you pick up a firearm you should first verify
what condition it is in, and handle it accordingly.
Narration Script:
Your friend John hands you his pistol and tells you it is in condition 3 (no bullet in the chamber) . He asks you to test out the
mechanics of the firearm and assures you it is safe to do so. How should you react?

Lesson 2:
Rule 2: NEVER
Estimated Time:
Narration Script:
In this lesson you will learn the second universal safety rule and why it is important. This lesson should take approximately
___ minutes to complete.
NEVER!
Narration Script:
The second universal safety rule is, “NEVER point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy”. ANY firearm can kill or damage anyone
or anything it is fired at. Unfortunately accidental shootings occur all too frequently due to a failure to adhere to this rule. NEVER assume the
condition of your firearm. It is also worth noting that although rare, instances of firearm malfunctions have occurred and resulted in injury. To
avoid incidents like this ensure that you only ever point your firearm at objects that you are willing to destroy.
Narration Script:
You’re making a short film with your friends. They want to shoot a scene in which the protagonist gets robbed at gunpoint,
and they want it to be as realistic as possible. They ask to borrow your pistol for the scene. What is the best response in
adherence with universal safety rule 2?

minutes to complete.
“Trigger Discipline”
Narration Script:
The third universal safety rule is, “keep your finger straight and off the trigger until ready to fire.” By this point you may have
noticed that each of the safety rules acts as a safeguard to potentially breaking another rule. For example, you should never
point a firearm at something you are unwilling to destroy however, if you mistakenly break that rule, a crisis can be avoided
by keeping your finger off the trigger to ensure avoiding accidental discharge. Adherence to this rule is referred to as
“Trigger Discipline”
