MODULE 2: Mental Health Self Awareness

Assessment 2
1. What is mental health? Why does it matter to advocate and address
mental health issues?
According to module, Mental health refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional
well-being. It is all about how people think, feel, and behave. It affects how we act,
handle stress and make choices, and our perspectives in world. It also includes
emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
It is important to advocate and address this mental health issues because is just as
important to our lives as our physical health and it’s because it affects everything
especially that we are in pandemic, staying at home for about a year now makes most
of us affect our mental health and lately I always heard on news and other social media
platforms that there are students who committed suicides due to stress, anxiety and
depression what make it worst is that most of th are young or teenagers. And everyone
should also be sensitive about this issue. Mental health should address also because if
there’s a problem with our mental health it can make our life harder to enjoy a balanced
and rewarding life.

2. Ask someone to share a story, experience, or circumstance in his/ her life.

It can be about his/her family, studies, friends, or self. Afterwards, answer
the following questions.
The story is from the overcoming depression of Harry which he posted his
experience in Mental Health Foundation (URL:
https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/stories/harrys-story-overcoming-
severedepression)
a. How do you feel about the story you just heard? What was your first
reaction? How about as the story unfolded?
First, everyone can feel stress, anxiety, and depression as long as
there are factors that threatens you to become stress and depress. I am
more worried about myself because he experienced depression during his
school days. The story about the depression of Harry and how he
overcome his struggle that eventually he became a Community Officer at
the Mental Health Foundation, and that’s made me happy for me because
from a depressed person he now advocate the awareness about mental
health by issue. According to him, when our mental health is affected then
other parts of our self will be affected to especially our physical health like
him he experienced shivers from his arms into his neck, a heavy chest
and many more. He also said that despite all of the struggles, mental
health can be managed and the same time prevented. According to his

experience, he battled hid depression for a long time ever since when he
was a student in a university, lying in his bedroom for a year telling his self
that he just only bored and he can’t accept that he has mental health
problem. What made me worry about his experience and might I will
experience too is that everybody has bad days, but depression can make
everyday a bad day and depression is a viscous cycle that without help it
is impossible to break.

b. What were your thoughts regarding the signs and symptoms of this
mental health issue? Have you experienced any of these yourself or
in someone you know?
Just what I’ve said, everyone can feel or experience this type of
mental health problems or issues. From the signs and symptoms of Harry,
it is very dangerous when this mental health issue if become worse, he
said that he feel trapped and isolated by his mental health problems and
not to be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel. At first, I thought that
having a bad day is just normal for me, because sometimes I observed
myself that from the moment I woke up, I already have this bay mood and
I don’t know why and I didn’t care about and I think I should start caring for
mental health because we don’t what will happen if it will get worse or not
especially that we are in pandemic we are in quarantine, feeling isolated at
home or even in our own rooms which it lower our productivity level.

c. How would you react if you noticed these in someone you care
about?
During this pandemic, there’s a possibility that it can occur to many of
my friends, and family members especially that they are now more stress
about life and school works. First, we should have to be sensitive what we
are going to say or to do with them, if I noticed some symptoms of mental
health problems from someone I care about is that I have to show or to
feel them that I always at there side if they need someone to talk, I am
always one call away because sometimes she causes of stress, anxiety
and depression is that they literally own their problems in and trying to
solve it by themselves. Just what Harry said that prevention is the key to
this issue so as early as possible if I noticed some symptoms, I always
ready to lend my hand.

d. How might taking action benefit you and the person you care about?
Taking action benefits me in way that it can give me knowledge about this
mental health issues and it can serves me as prevention and the same
time awareness so that I can be aware of myself and it will gives me some
ideas on how to manage it. For the person I care about, it benefits them

the same as for myself, and in a way that they should always know that if
they experiencing some circumstances, that I am always here for
them and to prevent them to enter the tunnel that have no light or even
shadow.

e. What actions could you take to help someone who is exhibiting

these signs and symptoms?
One reason why most us can feel stress and anxiety because of our
own problems that we have never open to anyone. Even we are not a
doctor or expert we can help them to ease their stressful life and there are
many ways to support somebody you care about. First, it is important to
respond sensitively to someone. Try to open conversation to him/her, be
open and non-judgemental listener and let them share whatever they want
and know your limits and be with him/her if he/she needs you. But if it
serious, try to ask him/her to consult a doctor or expert.

f. What do you believe is important for anyone to be aware of if they

know someone with this mental health issue?
I believe and it is a must that anyone should know if the have or
someone have with this mental health issue. It is a very serious problems
especially to the youths nowadays and especially we are experiencing
pandemic which sometimes it can lead to suicide and the fact that there is
an increasing of people who committed suicides. So that, if we are worried
about mental health of others, we can help them, care and support during
their tough times and in return, they could also help us in our tough times
too.

g. What experiences have you had that are related to this story? What
was similar? what differed?
The shared experiences that is similar to Harry and most of us is
having bad day sometimes or having bad mood. We have similarities with
Harry, during this pandemic and like Harry, I would spend my days on bed,
unwilling or unable to move and even to refuse socialize, I am sometimes
replying only to the group chats of my classmates for my studying but still I’m
not focusing and I want to escape but not able to go nowhere. The only
difference with Harry’s experience is that even though we have similarities I
keep going with my studies or school or just because I’m not that have mental
health problems as Harry and unlike Harry I’m able to drink and eat foods on
time. And unlike him, I am not aware of my actions what’s going inside and
the relationship between my body and mind.
