GUMAOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
II. Rationale:
Reading is an exercise for the mind. It helps kids enjoy and open doors of new
knowledge to enlighten their minds. But this will not happen if our learners have difficulty in
reading.
The result of Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) conducted last October, 2021,
show that there are 322 non-readers in Key Stage 1. While the conduct of Phil-IRI of the same
month, there are 254 students who fall in the Frustration Level for Key Stage 2.
With this data that we had, we conducted distant reading remediation to assist students
with difficulty in reading. This remediation is being done because of the following reasons:
Effect of the pandemic - There is a hard time to focus on reading because the
learners can’t go to school. Children have different needs for support. Support
includes the availability of reading materials, one-on-one reading session from
teachers, and additional learning accommodations. Without access to these
resources, children who require additional help begin to fall behind and are
unable to catch up. This is putting them at a major learning disadvantage.
Lack of support from the family members either both are working or incapable of
guiding the child due to educational background, economic situation, etc.
Difference in Learning Styles- There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution for learning.
Every student has a slightly different learning style that works best for him or
her. When a student isn’t able to learn according to his or her learning style, it
makes it difficult to build core skills—including reading.
The remediation worked among learners who have the resources needed to
communicate and undertake the process with the guidance of the teachers. However, the
majority of the underprivileged learners are not given the same opportunity due to the
restrictions brought by the pandemic. From these students come a number of candidates for
dropping out. As a means to help these children stay in school, we are conducting Project GES
in Reading and Comprehension: Extreme.
The Alert Level that our city is enjoying right now and the trend that the covid situation
has been showing these past few weeks offers a good opportunity for teachers to make
learning more accessible to the students.
In coordination with the three barangays, the learning extension hubs will be utilized as
our venue for this activity. Learners who live nearby the school will be accommodated in the
school.

Noted by:
Reading is an essential skill that every learner should learn. But some learners had
difficulty with this because of some reasons.
With this problem encountered, Gumaok Elementary School continued its Reading
Remediation; Project GES in Reading to Project GES: Extreme. This new name emphasizes that
the beneficiaries are those students with extreme difficulty in reading.
