1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to represent a suitable model for ZXUR 9000 GSM
dimensioning. It is noted that the document is a “living” document and shall be continually
updated to reflect any changes/outputs/adjustments throughout the course of the ZXUR
9000 GSM capacity design, implementation, hardware configuration modification and
software upgrade provided by operator.
1.2 Scope
The documentation presents the ZXUR 9000 GSM hardware architecture, traffic profile
analysis, board’s processing capability, and principles for board dimensioning.
The dimensioning in this document is suitable for software version UR13, and will change
due to software version upgrade.
The ZXUR 9000 dimension is based on the traffic profile from the operator. The following
are the essential requirements for the ZXUR 9000 dimension, and can be considered as
the input of the dimension.
2.1.2 CS Erlang
PDCH number means the number of PS channel, which is calculated from the
requirement of PDCH channel per cell or per TRX by the operator.
2.1.4 PS Data
PS data means the traffic in PS service, decided by the PDCH number and the code rate.
2.1.5 eBHCA
The concept of BHCA in ZXUR 9000 is different from its general idea, and named by
eBHCA (Equivalent BHCA). In this document, eBHCA is a comprehensive consideration
of all traffics and signal messages in busy hour. The eBHCA contains not only CS/PS call,
but also other signaling requirements, such as handover, update and etc. Different
signaling consumes different resources of ZXUR 9000.
Normally eBHCA is calculated based on the following messages combination. Each item
can be measured in live network, and the example date is recommended value by ZTE.
Example of Convert
Signaling Model (per user) Unit
Requirements Coefficient
1 Erl/ Subscriber 0.03 Erl 6300%
Intra-BSC HO/
6 1 Times/Busy Hour 40%
Subscriber
In which:
The idea behind the busy hour is that the traffic is not leveled throughout the day. There
are some peak hours in a day which are busy and have more traffic than normal hours.
During these hours traffic is at maximum level, and generally is used for network
planning and dimensioning. The traffic in busy hour is calculated up to operator, and
normally 4 hours per day are recommended.
Convert Coefficient is related to CS call that, how much capacity is occupied to process
other signaling.
And, Equivalent BHCA per BSC= (0.03×63+ 1.2×1 + 1.1×1.37 + 2×0.31 + 0.7×0.28 +
1×0.40+ 0.2×0.46 + 8× 0.20+ 1.1*0.17) * user number per BSC
The data of “Example of Requirements” in Table 2-2 are default traffic profile, which
should be modified according to the requirements of operator. Consider the redundancy
of the gap of the different network, the default value of equivalent BHCA per user is 9-10.
According to the requirements from the operator, the transmission interface type for
ZXUR 9000 will be listed in Table 2-3 and Table 2-4 below:

Gb interface
There are some other default parameters used in the ZXUR9000 hardware dimension,
the value of the default parameters is based on ZTE’s mode, shown in the following
table:
Notes:
(2) The transmission redundancy and process redundancy can be changed by operator.
The ZXUR 9000 is a standard 19-inch built-in cabinet, the height* width* depth of which
is 2200* 600* 800 (mm).
The cabinet of ZXUR 9000 has 3 shelves. Each shelf has 28 slots (1-14 in front and
15-28 in rear).
Master shelf is mandatory, and at least one master shelf needs to be configured. It has
the master clock distribution function and located at the bottom of cabinet.
Slave shelf is optional, and 0 to 2 slave shelves can be configured, which are regarded
as the capacity expansion of master shelf, and the first slave shelf is suggested to be
configured at the top of the rack.
Based on the functionality, the boards are classified into three types such as process
boards, interface boards and switch boards.

In ZXUR 9000, process boards are responsible for the control plane and user plane
processing. Interface boards are responsible for the transmission interface and protocol
processing. Switch boards provide system control, data switch, system operation and
maintenance.

Each shelf has 28 slots, 14 slots in front and 14 slots in rear. Interface boards and switch
boards locate at the rear and the process boards locate at the front.
In which:
There are 14 slots in rear, and 4 slots are mandatory for EGBS and EGFS. Only 10 slots
available for interface boards. And all slots in front can be used for service board, and the
O&M board is included in the number of service board.
4.2.1 UMP
The number of UMP is fixed for 4, 2 for OMM and 2 for OMP. The slot number for OMM is
5-6, and for OMP is 7-8 in master shelf.
4.2.2 USP
The process board can be divided into USP and ETCB. USP fulfills control plane and
user plane processing, for A interface adopting IP Ethernet transmission type, USP
processes CS and PS service; for A interface adopting TDM transmission type, USP only
processes PS service, with the CS service processed by ETCB; for TC remote, USP is
responsible for PS service and another NE named iTC fulfills the transcode function.
According to the board capacity, the number of processing board is calculated. The
capacity of processing board for GSM is listed in the Table 4-2:
In which:
The switch board provides large-capacity and non-blocking switch function for system
control management, communication between service processing boards and traffic
connection among multiple access units.
4.3.1 EGBS
EGBS is the switch board of control plane, and 2 pieces EGBS provide intra-shelf (52G)
and inter-shelf (4G) control plane switch channel. The slot number for EGBS is 19-20.
EGBS in the master shelf is also in charge of the control plane channel between slave
shelves and master shelf.
4.3.2 EGFS
EGFS is the switch board of user plane, and 2 pieces EGFS provide intra-shelf (68G)
and inter-shelf (20G) user plane switch channel. The slot number for EGFS is 21-22.
EGFS in the master shelf is in charge of the user plane channel between slave shelves
and master shelf.
EGFS in master shelf also works as a clock board, which is responsible for the clock
supply and external synchronization.
The configuration principles for the switch boards are described in Table 3-1:
Generally, the bandwidth of PS is larger in the downlink compared with the uplink, in
order to simplify the calculation, only the downlink bandwidth is calculated in this
document, and assumption the bandwidth of uplink is equal to downlink.

each interface.
