1 Introduction
The key product connecting the AXE system with the surrounding world is the ETC 5, where
five indicates a new generation. All services provided by this product are, for the first time,
gathered on one single half size (115 mm ) board. Exchange terminal circuits are found in all
AXE exchanges regardless of configuration or type of network.

Greatly reduced in size the ETC 5 has several new features compared to earlier releases of
exchange terminals : a code conversion that makes smooth connections to other networks, HW
prepared to Synchronisation Status Messages, which will optimise network synchronisation.
There are at least eight more - all listed under "Technology".

ETC5 is the interface unit between an E1 ( G703, 2048 kbits/s) digital path and the group switch
in an exchange. ETC5 terminates 32 channel PCM trunks/time slot. Figure 1 shows ETC5's
place in the network.

The ETC5 board is implemented in the building practice BYB 501 and is housed in the Generic
Extension Module Magazine 2 - GEMM 2 - subrack, which also contains the RP-pair and the
DL MUX-pair, which multiplexes the time slots from the ETCs into one bit stream to the group
switch.

ETC5 is based on ITU-T recommendations, ETSI standards and stable drafts as per March 1996
which gives new functionality as follows:

The most significant feature provided by the ETC5 is the introduction of transmission
performance supervision according to ITU-T recommendation M.2100 and M.2120

The size reduction of 50% compared to ETC4 is made possible by the design of a new ASIC.
This five fold reduction together with the use of 3V logic, contributes to a drastic reduction in
power consumption.

3.1 New Features in ETC5

 Slip supervision together with M.2100 and M.2120
 Introduction of Automatic CRC-4 mode
 HW prepared for Synchronization Status Message (SSM). Enables an optimized network
synchronization.
 Increased capability for tone sending and attenuation
 A <->m law code conversion which gives smooth connection to networks that uses m-law
 Possibility to send m law coded tones
 Possible to set the slip hysteresis between 5 to 30 TS
 Selectable quiet (idle) code pattern
 ISDN primary rate access (30B+D), V3 layer 1 interface.
 ETSI V 5.2 layer 1 capability.

3.2 Functions in ETC released earlier

 TS16:
 CAS Multiframe Structure
 Through Connected
 Connected to Signalling Device Interface
 2048 kbit/s add/drop (DIP) e.g. for #5 inband signaling
 TS0 spare bits (Sa) one by one connected to GS or RP
 Tone sending (audible tones e.g. dial tone) towards DIP or GS
 Digital Attenuator (Receive)
 Idle Pattern Generator (DIP/GS)
 AIS Generator (DIP/GS)
 8 kHz synch signal (Receive) to the Clock Module
 In-service maintenance (e.g. parity, alarm exercise, ..)
 Restart Self Diagnostics

3.3 Compatibility
From a SW point of view the ETC5 is compatible with ETC4 i.e. it is possible to run current
ETC4 (ETC3) SW together with ETC5 HW.

4 Technical data
 The board size is 115 x 175 x 20 mm ( H x D x W )
 Subrack : GDM-H, GEMM 2, half size
 Spacing 20 mm
 Power consumption 2 W
 Conforms to all EMC class B standards
