Description 3 (11)

1 Introduction
This document describes the Input/Output Group 20 (IOG 20). The AXE system uses a support
system called I/O that handles data transport to and from AXE. The I/O acts as an interface
between AXE and external systems, including billing centres, operation and maintenance
centres, and staff involved in handling subscribers, tracing faults, recording traffic, and
otherwise managing the network.

The I/O system is equipped with different kinds of stores :

 Hard discs
 Floppy discs
 Optical discs

IOG 20 is built on a completely new Hard ware platform. IOG 20 has basically the same
functionality as its predecessor, IOG 11, but IOG 20 has substantially higher performance,
thanks to changed internal structure and usage of new Hardware and faster processors.

2 Performance
The main improvements are:

Higher performance such as:

 Increased processing power

 Increased throughput
 Increased disk updating speed
 Increased data link transmission speed

Reduced cost of ownership:

 Reduced physical size => lower rental cost, less spare parts, less cabling => easier to
maintain
 Reduced number of board types => less spare parts
 Reduced power consumption => reduction of operational costs

Compared to previous I/O systems, the IOG 20 is much smaller. One cabinet in BYB 202 can
now be fitted into only one sub-rack in BYB 501

The processing capacity and throughput is up to five times better than IOG 11, and the power
consumption is reduced by a factor three.

The disk updating speed is increased four-fold, and the storage capacity 6 times compared to
IOG 11.

Description 4 (11)

A considerable reduction in types of printed circuit boards - down to seven compared to 25 in

IOG 11 - is achieved through the use of modern technology allowing higher integration on each
board. This makes not only maintenance easier (emphasised even more through better HW-
diagnostics) but the need to store spare parts is cut dramatically.

IOG 20 is based on a new processor, Motorola 68060, and industry standard internal buses.

Further, to underline the intentions to make the system open to generally available components,
the introduction of the industry standard VME bus is one significant step in that direction.
Another initiative along the same line is the use of ethernet for connections between nodes.

Initially, IOG 20 is available in three configurations :

 Basic configuration in two sub-racks with parallel Regional Processor (RP) bus interface.
(IOG 20B-P)
 Basic configuration in two sub-racks with interface towards the new serial RP bus (IOG 20B-
S)
 Compact configuration in only one sub-rack with interface to new serial RP-bus- (IOG 20C)

All configurations provide full redundancy: that is, all the hardware is duplicated.

IOG20B-P and IOG20B-S include floppy disk, one or two optical disks, and one to three hard
disks per side.

IOG20C includes one hard disk and one optical disk per side.

IOG 20 is fitted into the new metric equipment practice BYB 501.

Description 5 (11)

3 Design
The design is based on seven different boards - not counting the power supply - available in
three different configurations, Compact and Basic for the serial RP bus, and Basic for the
parallel bus, all fitted into equipment practice BYB501.

In the Basic configuration, the full secondary storage range is three hard discs and one optical
disc 5.25 inches each, while the Compact version has one hard disc and one optical disc - 3½
inches.

As data communication with the surrounding world the Basic has four, and the Compact three,
Line Unit Modules (LUM).

All three versions are equipped with adapters for standard VME board sizes and back planes
with standard VME connectors.

The internal buses used are the standard VME, Small Computer Standard Interface (SCSI) and
Ethernet

In the standard version, V24/V28, V35, V36, G703 and Ethernet are supported, and can be used
in any combination.

The CPU-60, the RPV, and the LUM are based on Motorola’s M68060.

Several interfaces are supported. Commands, printouts, and file transfer to/from IOG 20 can be
sent using the Ericsson MTP protocol over X25 with speeds up to 2Mbit/s. File Transfer and
Access Management (FTAM) can also be used for file transfer to/from IOG 20.

The basic configuration has up to 16 ports, and the compact configuration has up to 12 ports for
connection of data channels, terminals, and Alarm Interface (ALI) per side.

There will be three versions of the IOG 20. (One Basic - 2 sub-rack - version which operates
with the parallel RP bus - IOG 20B-P.) The IOG 20 interfacing the new serial RP bus comes in
the following two configurations:

 Basic IOG20B
 Compact IOG20C
