A new version of the DTI is adapted to the BYB501 mechanics by inserting the current
DTI plug-in units (PBA’s) into an adaption magazine which will fit into a BYB 501
cabinet. This solution will be available after the CME20 R6.1 and CMS40 R3. This
solution will bring further benefits for the customer compared to the DTI in BYB 202
mechanics.

Data Transmission Interworking Unit (DTI) is a hardware platform implementing the

GSM Inter Working Function (IWF) for datacom Bearer Services and Facsimile
Teleservices. The DTI will bring new benefits to the customer and also be the basis for
new future data services compared to the GIWU.

The DTI will be able to co-exist with the current GIWU platform so no existing
hardware needs to be thrown away. The DTI platform will be supported from CME20
R6.1 and CMS40 R3 in BYB 202 mechanics.

This product description describes the performance, design, compatibility aspects,
dimensioning and and technical data for the DTI when adapted to BYB 501 mechanics.
In addition some characteristics of the GIWU and DTI in BYB 202 have been
emphasized in order to show the evolution and the benefits in upgrading to DTI in BYB
501.

Compared to DTI/BYB202, the main advantage is that the new version is adapted to
BYB501 mechanics. The hardware is otherwise identical. Through this adaption the
advantages of BYB501 are obtained, such as:

• Improved EMC characteristics

• Better floorspace utilization (1800X600X400 mm instead of 1900X720X400 mm )
• Since the cabinet is compliant to valid IEC and ETSI standards, other vendors
equipment can be placed inside the same cabinet that hosts the DTI.
• The BYB 501 is future proof and the cabinet need not be thrown away when future
generations of DTI are developed.
For a complete description of the benefits of the BYB 501 mechanics, please refer to
(1).

• AXE10 integration means benefits for Operation and Maintenance

• A decrease in hardware cost per data channel
• Smaller footprint and more channels pr. space unit. The DTI will require less space
compared to the GIWU since one 5 shelves cabinet can host 128 channels compared
to 90 channels in the 6 shelves GIWU cabinet on the same footprint (720X400 mm).
• The DTI is prepared for new higher speed data services, e.g. it includes V.34
modems.

The DTI is, as opposed to the current GIWU, integrated in AXE and based on a
Regional Processor Device (RPD) design. The above diagram shows the layout and
design of the DTI magazine. It can be seen that two connections exist to the MSC, the
first of which is the interface to the RP-Bus for communication with the CP for control
and the second, is the connection to the Group Switch for the ‘Traffic Circuits’.

Connection to the DTI from the APZ RP Bus is terminated on the “ Regional Processor
Bus Unit” (RPBU) PBA’s, which will relay and send information to/from the DTI’s
processor (PRO20), to and from the CP.

Communication between the ‘Regional Processor Device’ (RPD) and the ‘Traffic’ part
of the DTI, is conveyed via the “ Regional Processor Device Backplane” (RPDB) data
bus to the GS/IB, or to give it is full title “ Combined Group Switch Network Interface
Circuit and Inter Bus Board” . Here the RPDB bus is terminated and the Inter Bus, will
then take over and convey the information onwards to the “ Traffic” (TR) PBA’s. The
Inter bus and RPDB bus together, are termed the “ Control Bus” .

Description 5 (8)

The DTI magazine can contain upto 8 TR PBAs, each one of which will support 4 ‘data
channels’. Therefore, a total of 32 simultaneous data calls, can be supported by each
DTI magazine. The data traffic to and from the GS is conveyed via two 2Mbit/sec
backplane busses to the GSNIC part of the GS/IB PBA and then via two “ Digital Link -
2” (DL-2) PCM interfaces for ‘timeslot’ switching in the GS. Note that when the DTI is
adapted to BYB 501, the DL-2 link from the DTI can optionally be converted to a DL-3
link to the Group Switch.

Within the TR PBA reside two “ Device Processors” (DP), with each DP controlling
two TR devices. Each ‘data channel’ or TR device, will utilise two 64 Kbit/sec
timeslots, one switched towards the Mobile Station and the other switched towards the
external network. (i.e. PSTN, PLMN, etc.).

Theoretically a maximum of 1024 DTIs could be connected to the CP, however, in

practice this would be much lower. Hence, it could be stated that typically the maximum
number of DTI’s that could be connected to a single CME20 MSC would be between 50
- 100, or 1600 - 3200 ‘data channels’.

The figures below show the evolution of the GIWU and DTI in the AXE environment.
In figure 2, the GIWU is shown as an external node to the AXE and IOG system. The
GIWU is connected to the IOG via an X.25 connection and a 2 Mb system.

A GEMM2 magazine can optionally be supported to convert from the DL-2 interface of
the DTI to the DL-3 interface of the GS, which is shown in figure 4. Note that the
DL2/DL-3 conversion is an option for the DTI in BYB 501 mechanics only.

The DTI and the current GIWU can co-exist and be connected to the same MSC. Thus
no old hardware needs to be thrown away. However, for certain future data services, the
DTI may be a prerequisite.

When the DTI is available the current GIWU will be phased out. All sales to increase
capacity in an existing MSC must be based on the DTI.

 'LPHQVLRQLQJ
For the dimensioning of the GIWU and the DTI, please refer to the relevant ordering
informations e.g ref. (2) and (3) for CME 201 R6.1 and CMS40 R3.

No dimensioning rules are available for the DTI in BYB 501. This type of information
will be available in the relevant ordering information when the product is released. The
dimensioning of this DTI is quite simiar to the dimensioning of the DTI in BYB 202.
However a GEMM2 magazine is needed to convert from the DL-2 links from the DTI to
DL-3 links to the GS. The GEMM2 magazine has 16 general purpose board positions,
thus a fully equipped GEMM2 magazine can support 8 DTI’s.

 7HFKQRORJ\
The technology of the DTI on magazine level is the same as for the DTI in BYB 202,
please refer to ref.(3). Only the difference in technology from DTI in BYB 202 and DTI
in BYB 501 is mentioned here:

• GEMM2 magazine (optional)
