ABSTRACT

The basic principle of a bench vice is holding work piece in between it’s jaw’s against the
machining tools. When we hold the work piece in the vice, we can’t move or tilt it in any
direction. In this modified bench vice we added 4 degrees of freedom to the existing vice,
making it ergonomic.

The degrees of freedoms are given to anvil and sliding jaw. A pair of jaw faces are provided to
hold two work pieces at a time. Ans anvil can be used for small ahaping processess.

CHAPTER: 1

INTRODUCTION

Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilize
the soil and give life to the world’s wildlife. They also provide us with the materials for tools and
shelter. Not only trees are essential for life, but as the longest living species on earth, they give
us a link between past, present and future. It is critical that wood lands, rain forests and trees in
urban setting such as parks, are preserved and sustainably managed across the world.
Tree transplantation is the latest technology to suite the need to conserve trees. The trees are an
important part of our ecosystem, and play a vital role in maintaining the biodiversity of the area.
In order to facilitate construction of large scale projects without cutting of trees, this technology
has been developed. Since trees have been established for many years, it is not possible to lift a
tree overnight.

Tree planting is the process of transplanting tree, if performedproperly can result in the
successful regeneration of a deforested area. In agriculture and gardening, transplanting or
replanting is thetechnique of moving a plant from one location to another.Reforestation is the
commercial logging industries answer to the largescale destruction of old growth forests. As the
trees remove carbon dioxide from the air as they grow, treeplanting can be used as a
geoengineering technique to remove CO2from the atmosphere.

LITRATURE REVIEW

5. 1 INTRODUCTION

Vise is a mechanical screw apparatus used for holding or clamping a work piece to allow work to
be performed on it with tools such as saws, planes, mills, drills, screwdrivers sandpaper, etc.
Vises usually have one fixed jaw and another, parallel jaw which is moved towards or away from
the fixed jaw by the screw. Vises are used as holding devise on machines like lathes, milling
machine, drilling machine etc. and also by tool makers for holding jobs. Design wise three
types of vises are very common in use namely plain vise, swivel vise and tool maker’s vise
which is commonly known as bench vise. Vise is usually refers to a bench vise with flat, parallel
jaws, attached to a workbench. There are two main types: a woodworking vise and engineer’s
vise. The woodworker’s bench vise main characteristic is its integration into the bench. An
engineer’s bench vise is usually clamped or bolted onto the top of the bench. The handle is
usually adjustable so that it can be tightened in small places. There are four main types of bench
vises these are machinist vise, mechanics vise, post vise and woodworkers vise. The machinist’s
vise is considered as “cream of the crop”. They are stoutly made and are finely machined. The
jaws should match up perfectly, and they will be made of very high grade (60,000psi or greater)
cast iron. The mechanic’s vises are made of lower grade iron. They usually have an integrated
anvil area. The post vise is a blacksmith’s tool, these vises are made of forged wrought iron, not
cast iron, allowing them to have ductility. The woodworker’s vise is an undermount vise, usually
with a retractable dog for clamping work upon the workbench.
There are two main types of jaws used on vises: hard and soft. Hard jaws are available with
either a coarse gripping surface or are ground flat and smooth to increase accuracy. The latter
relies on pressure for gripping, instead of a rough surface. An unskilled operator has the
tendency to over tighten jaws, leading to part deformation and error in the finished workpiece.
Soft jaws are usually made from a soft metal (usually aluminum), plastic, or wood. They are
used to either hold delicate workpieces. These specifically cut jaws are often used in place of
fixtures and most commonly used in gang operations. They are also used for rapid change-over
type set-ups since they can be easily engraved with the part number, the job number, or other
information relevant to the job being run. Soft jaws are considered a consumable item, because
they are discarded or recycled after multiple uses.

5.2.1.1 INTRODUCTION

Vise is a mechanical screw apparatus used for holding or clamping a work piece to allow work to
be performed on it with tools such as saws, planes, mills, drills, screwdrivers sandpaper, etc.
Vises usually have one fixed jaw and another, parallel jaw which is moved towards or away from

5.2.1.2 Rapid Prototyping

Prototyping or model making is one of the important steps to finalize a product design. It helps in
conceptualization of a design. Before the start of full production a prototype is usually fabricated

Page 13

and tested. Manual prototyping by a skilled craftsman has been an age old practice for many
centuries. Second phase of prototyping started around mid-1970s,when a soft prototype odeled
by 3D curves and surfaces could be stressed in virtual environment, simulated and tested with
exact material and other properties. Third and the latest trend of prototyping, i.e., Rapid
Prototyping (RP) by layer-by-layer material deposition, started during early 1980s with the
enormous growth in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technologies
when almost unambiguous solid models with knitted information of edges and surfaces could
define a product and also manufacture it by CNC machining.

Page 14

RP process belong to the generative (or additive) production processes unlike subtractive or
forming processes such as lathing, milling, grinding or coining etc. in which form is shaped by
material removal or plastic deformation. In all commercial RP processes, the part is fabricated by
deposition of layers contoured in a (x-y) plane two dimensionally. The third dimension (z)
results from single layers being stacked up on top of each other, but not as a continuous z
coordinate. Therefore, the prototypes are very exact on the x-y plane but have stair-stepping
effect in z-direction. If model is deposited with very fine layers, i.e., smaller z-stepping, model
looks like original. RP can be classified into two fundamental process steps namely generation of
mathematical layer information an generation of physical layer model. Typical process chain of
various RP systems is shown in figure

5.2.1.4 Case Study
The Manufacturing industry is operating on tighter margins and ever increasing competition.
With more competition and ever changing consumer demands, small scale industries are
frequently realizing the necessity to reengineer their facility to satisfy the needs of many product
groups and styles. In the Mechanical Engineering field bench vise plays a vital role during
manufacturing of various components. Therefore we have selected the bench vise for the case
study. In market different types of bench vises are available to meet the industry demand but till
the existing bench vise can be modified in different types to complete the operations safely,

efficiently and to increase the productivity of manufacturing industry. We have manufactured the
proposed modified bench vice by using Rapid Prototyping process.

5.2.1.5 Objectives
1. Study of Rapid Prototyping and bench Vise.
2. Designing a conventional bench vise using Pro-E.
3. Design modification by value addition in the bench vise.
4. One side locking arrangement (C Clamp with one screw) for bench vise to make it
portable& fix bench vice on different tables at any location.
5. Providing surface plate with right angle plate on stationary jaw for measurement of right

 A better idea of the estimated cost of application development can be obtained.
 In prototype, a visual representation of the final application is gained and enables better
demonstration of the feasibility of our idea to other people (investors, colleagues, and
superiors).

5.2.1.8 Conclusions
Design process is achieved by relying on new design methods and with the help of computer
software’s like CATIA, UG, Solid works and Pro-E. The need of modifications in actual design
is to reduce overall cost of the product, increase the products life, minimizing material waste etc.
These are achieved in the modifications of bench vise. In the next phase of the project all
designed parts has to be converted into STL format. Using conventional methods, such as
casting, forging, machining etc. engineers are limited in the ability to design bench vise by the
drastic length of time required to prototype an idea.
Modified traditional fixed jaw to the shape of surface plate which helps to insure that either two
faces of work-piece are in 900 or not. When it is necessary to measure the 900 angle between
any two faces repetitively then this modification saves the time.

5.2.2 Design and Analysis of Modular Fixture for Machine Vice

5.2.2.1 Comparison Of Existing Screw –Less Machine Vice With Proposed

Screw Less Machine Vice

In the existing vice as shown in Figure 1. It has certain demerits such as clamping force required
to hold the component is not highly sufficient enough also the movement of movable jaw was
restricted due to the presence of triangular block. In order to overcome the drawbacks of existing
vice proposed model of vice was suggested. In the proposed model as described in figure 2. Is
said to be much simpler in design as compared to previous one. In this type attempt has been
made to design a modular fixture which is highly flexible in nature. In the proposed model
modular fixture was considered to be as movable jaw provided with Allen key slot this set up
was easier than previous model. The main advantages present in the proposed model was
minimizing the effects of clamping force since in this set up fixture was firmly placed on the
holes of base block very rigidly also the movement of Fixture was not restricted as like old
model as shown in fig 1.

VICE USING ANSYS:

Fig 5.6 Total Deformation on clamp for existing model

Fig 5.7 Total deformation for proposed model

Department Of Mechanical Engineering

Page 20
Modified Bench Vice Design project Report2019

In this analysis comparison was made between existing vice and proposed vice in terms of
deformation when a load is acting on the vice as shown in figures 3 and 4 respectively. 6
P.Sivasankaran In this analysis a load of 16000N was assumed to act on clamp part of existing
vice as described in fig 3. Due to the applied load on the clamp the deformation takes place on
the connecting plates which supports the cubic bar which is mounted on the triangular piece. In
this analysis the deformation rate was measured to be 0.003 m was shown in the fig 3.

Similarly the same type of deformation analysis is carried out for proposed model as indicated in
fig 4. In this type of analysis applied load is same like previous model. The direction of load
acting on the fixture is in forward direction as given in fig 4. The rate of deformation was
measured to be 0.00017m.

5.2.2.3 Inference from the results

SL.NO Existing Model Proposed Model

Deformation (m) Deformation (m)
1. 0.003 0.00017

Table 5.2 Interference

From the above results it was clearly indicated that the deformation rate for proposed model is
much less as compared to existing model. From this it is understood that the proposed model was
considered to be highly robust enough to withstand loads as compared to existing model of vice.

5.2.2.4 Conclusion

Thus the proposed model was evaluated in ANSYS software by calculating the deformation rate
for given load which is compared with the results of existing vice. From this analysis one can
choose second model or proposed vice for fabrication. In this analysis the material considered for
vice is cast iron based on that deformation results are obtained for both the models of vice.

5.2.3 Design and Fabrication of Automatic Machine Vice using

Microcontroller
5.2.3.1 INTRODUCTION
An incredible range of manufacturing systems use the force and power of fluids such as water,

oil and air. Powered clamps open and close with the force of pressurized air or oil, large presses

clear shape and form metal with hydraulic pressure and assembly torque tools fasten components

with pressurized air. In each example, Fluid power provides the energy necessary to exert

significant mechanical forces. The Most the small scale industry the requirement of the man

power is more. In required more time, Energy, man power as well as the maintenance. The

machine vice is the work holding device that will hold the job. The worker need to be hold or

grab he work piece for loading and unloading. Since, as a mechatronics engineering we came up

with a solution at low cost automation technique using electronics and the mechanical devices.

This system will comes with the automatic loading and the unloading techniques and release as

with the peripheral timed controls.

5.2.3.2 LITERATURE REVIEW

[1] Bench Vice is a holding machine that Machine vises are mounted on grinding machines,
drill presses and milling machines. Abrasive chop saws have a special type of machine vise built
in to the saw. Some people use a machine vise as a bench vise because of the low cost and small
size.
[2] Dr S K Patel has designed and developed a work holding Vice for the Drilling and milling
purpose. This project brought the idea about the machine vice for drilling purpose as well as the
other machining purpose. For large scale production of different materials a lot of time is wasted
in set up of the device and clamping the device. Trial and error method is usually practiced until
the axis of the hole is properly aligned with the axis of the drill. In such a situation a lot of time
is being wasted to maintain the accuracy. Eventually it increases the operator’s fatigue. Thus drill

jig increases productivity by eliminating individual positioning, marking and frequent checking.
The main advantage of the jigs is interchangeability.

5.2.3.3 MODIFIED MACHINE VICE

Fig 5.8 Modified machine vice

The modified machine has a feature of self-adapting of the different complicated work pieces.
What the additional features is there will be no more flywheel for rotating to hold or tight the
work piece. It automatically sense the object and hold the work piece to the excel environment.
It’s also release the work piece after completing the work or process. Thus the final product is a
complete solution for the manual and increasing the speed rate of production.

he automatic machine vice is operated with the pneumatics. The machine vice is made to the
controlled with the DCV at the fixed rate of the compressed air. The operation is made to follow
a sequence of timed control by the cocked timed programmed with the PC microcontroller.
There is an IR sensor which will continuously monitor the presence of object or work piece. We
also add a Buzzer alarm which will inform that the vice is going to close. The operation begins
with the presence of object detection by the IR sensor and signal is fed to the microcontroller as
shown in the figure 04. When the object is detected the buzzer alarm produces a sequential sound
for the 2-4 seconds. The microcontroller actuates the DCV for the pneumatics and the cylinder is
operated. Depend up the various operation like holding, screwing, drilling, boring, face and top
surface milling and many can be done dependency of the specific operation. The microcontroller
has an advantage of re-write the program as well as electrically erasable and store at the any
instant. After the operation the vice is retracted. We follow slow forward extinction and the fast
retraction while returning. Depend up on the operation the clocked time can be changed. Here we
use default timing for the demo version.

5.2.4 Design and Modification of Bench Vice by Increasing the

Degrees of Freedom

5.2.4.1 Introduction

Increasing the accuracy and productivity are the two basic aims of mass production. As we
know the solution to this is by reducing the manual fatigue and also reducing the set up cost of
the machine. In this case the device that fulfils our needs is the use of jigs. Let us take one
example. Let us consider that one gets an order of say 1000 products. There need to be drilled
three holes on this product. In such a case the designer tries to draw out every single hole with
the help of square, straightners, scribers and center hole. In order to align the axis of the drill
with the axis of the hole we generally go for trial and error method. Accuracy is the main
problem in such cases. In doing so accuracy increases the work load on the operator. Hence
using of jig to position and guide the tool to its right path is preferred rather than using scribers,
square, straightners or center punch etc. Thus, the productivity is increased which is done by
eliminating individual marking, positioning and frequent checking. Interchangeability is the chief
advantage here. All the parts fit in properly except only the similar components are
interchangeable. One does not need to repeatedly unclamp and clamp the object for various
purposes like positioning as the locating, guiding and clamping of the tool is done by the jig
itself. Bushing is used which is a tool guiding tool. So, it reduces the presence of skilled laborer.
Drill jig helps to ream, drill and tap at a much faster speed and with great accuracy as compared
to holes done conventionally by hand. The responsibility to maintain the accuracy of the hole is
now shifted from the operator and given to the jig. May it be a drill fixture or a drill jig the
necessity of a clamping device is inevitable. In case of a drill jig bushings are used. These drill
bushings guide the drill bit during the drilling operation. Generally, work piece is held by a
fixture and the fixture is arranged in such a way that the loading and unloading of the job is fast.
As we all know a fixture is a production tool which is mainly used to hold, locate and support the
work piece firmly to the table. Feeler and Set blocks are sometimes used to provide reference of

Department Of Mechanical Engineering

Page 26

the cutter to the work piece. The main concern is the fastening of the fixture. These fixtures also
help in simplifying the network operations which are performed on special equipment.

 A screw clamp is used on the base of bench vice.
 By turning the handle fitted with the clamp, we can place the bench vice in any table.
 The movable anvil can rotate about 360 degree increasing the degree of freedom.
 By the movability of anvil we can even place the work piece outside of the table making
the machining process more comfortable.
 Static jaw and sliding jaw are placed on the anvil.
 Static jaw is permanently fixed in to the anvil , while the sliding jaw can be removed
from the anvil.
 Unlike the existing vices these modified bench vice consists of two pairs of jaw heads to
hold work piece.
 Since it have two pairs of jaw heads, two work can be carried out at a time.
 Both the heads of sliding and static jaws can be rotated 360 degree about perpendicular
their axis.
 This helps in holding the work piece in any angle.
