ALFONSO UGARTE

Alfonso Ugarte was born on July 13, 1847, in the city

of Iquique, province of Tarapacá, Peru. He was a

Peruvian miner entrepreneur, farmer, merchant, and

military man. He graduated as an accountant in the

city of Valparaiso. In 1876, he worked managing the

saltpeter companies of his family. He participated in

the battle of Tarapacá. During the Pacific War, he was willing to travel to Europe on

business, but decided to stay to personally contribute to the defense of his hometown.

So, on June 7, 1880, he mounted his horse, jumped off a cliff and brought with him the

flag of Peru, for which he died crashed into the rocks. He was a brave person.
