1. Câu điều kiện ở dạng đảo (đảo ngữ ở điều kiện IF, còn vế chính vẫn giữ nguyên)
- Type 1: If +S+ Vs-es,… -> Should+ S+ Vo
If there is any difficulty,…-> Should there be any difficulty
If he likes it,…-> Should he like it
- Type 2: If + S+ Ved/ Were adj/ N…-> Were+S+ to V/ adj/ N
If I were in your shoes,…-> Were I in your shoes,…
If he loved me…-> Were he to love me,…
- Type 3: If+ S+ had (not)+ P2,…-> Had +S+ (not)+ P2
If he had studied harder,..-> Had he studied harder,…
If it hadn’t rained yesterday…-> Had it not rained yesterday,…

2. Trường hợp đặc biệt của câu điều kiện.

*) Type 1: Các liên từ có thể thay thế cho If
a) Unless= If…not
If you are not happy, I’ll take you out for a while.
→ Unless you are happy, I’ll take you out for a while.
If you don’t like him, tell him.
→ Unless you like him, tell him.
b) Provided that/ Providing that: Miễn là
So/ As long as
I’ll lend you 10 thousand dong for breakfast as long as you promise to pay me back tomorrow.

c) On condition that: Với điều kiện là

I’ll go on condition that you go with me.

d) Once: Một khi

Once she makes decision, no one can change her mind.

e) If+ S+ Vs-es, Vo
If you are hungry, go to a restaurant.
If you feel cold, don't open the door.

f) What if..= What will happen if…

What if I come late
= What will happen if I come late.

g) Supposed that/ Suposing that: Giả sử

Real condition: Supposing that it rains, can we go to the cinema?
Unreal condition: Supposed that it rained, what would you do?

h) In case: trong trường hợp.

Bring your umbrella, in case it rains.
In case there is a fire, dial this number.

In case of+ N:
In case of rain, bring your umbrella
In case of fire/ emergency, dial this number

*) Type 2 and 3:
- Without : mà không, nếu không
What would our life be without electricity?( Type 2)
Without his help, I would never have been successful. (Type 3)
- But for (= If it hadn’t been for) Type 3: Nếu không nhờ/ có…
But for her father’s support, she would not have been able to conduct the survey.
(= If it hadn’t been for her father’s support, she would not have been able to conduct the survey.)
- Otherwise+ real condition : kẻo, nếu không thì
We must be back before midnight, otherwise I will be locked out.
Otherwise+ unreal condition : kẻo, nếu không thì

- If only: Giá mà
If only + present tense/future tense: diễn tả hi vọng trong tương lai
If only he comes in time = we hope he will come in time.

If only + simple past: diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở hiện tại
If only he loved me.
If only + past perfect: diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở quá khứ
If only I had not believed him.
If only ….would do: mong có sự thay đổi trong tương lai
You are driving too dangerously. If only you would drive slowly.
= I wish you would drive slowly.
-“As if/ as though” sentence: cứ như thể là…
As if/as though + present tense: diễn đạt hành động có thật
It looks as if it’s going to rain.
He appears running from a fierce dog.
–> It looks as if he is running from a fierce dog.
As if/as though + simple past: diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở hiện tại
It’s very cold today. It looks as if/as though it were autumn now.
(thực ra bây giờ đang là mùa hè)
She says as if she were my boss.
As if/as though + past perfect: diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở quá khứ
He looked as if he had seen the ghost.
