ABSTRACT
CAPTAIN ALBERT AGUILAR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Junior High School Level

This study aimed to determine the possible effect when students listen to their

preferred music genre during a test. This research answers the following question; [1]

What is the profile of the students correlating with the scores they obtained during the

test and the genre they chose. [2] Is there a difference with the score of the students that

listened to the genre they prefer and the students that did not.

The researchers used the Systematic Stratified sampling, which divides the

population into groups called strata. The population will be separated into two groups

namely; Group A (selected students that will listen to their preferred genre; Pop, and

selected students that does not prefer the said genre), Group B (selected students that will

listen to their preferred genre; Ballad, and selected students that does not prefer the said

genre).

CHAPTER I.
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Music has fulfilled a major part in different cultures. It has been valued by

the society for almost 10,000 years ago. Hence, everybody has a different musical taste,

different musical genre emerged and been named since the early 1800’s. Each has a

unique music preference which differ from one another and it play’s a big role with

understanding their personalities. Everywhere we go, music is present (Rentfrow,

Goldberg, & Levitin, 2012). Listening unintentionally and intentionally adds up to more

than 5 hours, an average estimate for most teenagers (Levitin, 2006; McCormick, 2009).

On the other hand, there is almost 1,264 genres of popular music, according to Glenn

McDonald, an engineer and “data alchemist”. Studies conducted by Rentfrow and

Gosling (2003) proved that music preference is directly related to a person’s personality

and behavioural characteristics via observing individuals with different music preference.

(Hurless, Mekic, Peña, Humphries, Gentry, & Nichols, 2013)

This research aims to solely know if students would listen to their preferred music

genre, would it increase their capability in doing better with their quiz. Letting students

listen to their preferred music genre can provide them motivation or can be a hindrance

with them in perfecting their quiz, because they are distracted once they hear it. Being

able to address what student’s will need to make a better performance in test is great for

them to enhance their capability in of perfecting or passing the test. But, is listening to

music will actually make them perform better?

Alternate Hypothesis

Ha: There is a significant effect when student listens to their preferred music

while taking a test.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on determining the effects of listening to a preferred music

genre of students during an English quiz. It will cover the following parameters; (genre of

music to be observed) Pop Music, (K-pop, hip-hop), ballad (love songs, sad songs, OPM

ballad song), the results shall only be interpreted via the result of both the genres

combined and the other group (which will not be listening to any music), students from

10- Ptolemy will be the respondents for this research. This study will not discuss about

the following; effects of each genre mentioned to the results

Significance of the Study

The researchers believe that the information data gathered about the effects of

listening to a preferred music genre of students during an English quiz would be

beneficial for the following:

STUDENTS – This study can help students to excel and perform better during test.

TEACHERS – This study will help teachers fine a better way to create a motivational

and positive environment for students during tests.

Definition of Terms

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The chapter presents the related literature and the related studies after the through

in - depth search done by the researchers.

Related Studies

Foreign Studies

According to the study conducted by Fitzpatrick (2006), stated that during the

Ohio Proficiency Test (OPT), with music being played with each classroom, students that

is highly linked with music and instruments outperforms students that shows no interest

towards music. She also discovered that results shown a pattern of increased achievement

by lower SES (socioeconomic status) instrumental students, who surpassed their higher

SES noninstrumental classmates by the ninth grade in all subjects, therefore can be

concluded that before being subjected to listening to music while taking a test, students

that are inclined to music performed poorly, but giving out the OTP with a the twist of

playing different instrumental music really helped them.

Another study suggests that the flow state along with the students own

composition being played during examination helps a lot for them to perform better.

“The concept of flow has been developed by Csikszentmihaly in his model of

optimal experience as one fundamental concept associated with positive psychology.

Flow state research originated from Csikszentmihaly’s intention to understand the

phenomenon of intrinsically motivated activity (later called autotelic activity). He created

the idea of flow by observing people who dedicate themselves almost totally to activities

like sports, literature, music making, rock climbing, dancing, games, sailing, chess etc.
CAPTAIN ALBERT AGUILAR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Junior High School Level
The flow state that occurs during these activities is characterized by subjective sense of

well-being and control, intense and focused concentration, an appropriate balance

between challenge and skills, unambiguous feed-back, merging of action and awareness,

loss of self-consciousness, distortion of time and clear goals. Subsequently,

Csikszentmihaly published an exhaustive theoretical model of the flow state

operationalized through nine factors. The model also included the implications of flow on

personal development, personality, skills, happiness, family life and work” (Enescu,

2015).

Another study reveals that aspects of flow is positively correlated with the

subjective well-being of musically inclined students. “students experience flow during

different musical activities, frequently during music performance, in a concert, rehearsals

or individual instrumental study” ((Fritz & Avsec, 2007).

The aforementioned researches all tackles about the positive effect of students

being subjected into listening to music while taking up their test. This research will differ

from the already stated researches in a way that this research will not only subject

students to listen to a specific music, but to their favorite or preferred music, which the

researchers guess more effective to make students perform better.

METHODOLOGY
This chapter present the methods used including research design, sampling

techniques, data gathering procedure, research instruments and the chosen statistical

treatment for the study.

Research Design

This study utilized quantitative research employing numerical type of research

design to acquire the required data. Participant observation is a period of intensive social

interaction between the researcher and the subjects, in the latter's environment. It

becomes the full-time occupation of the researcher. Participant observers are trained in

techniques of observation, which distinguishes them from regular participants.

Corpus of Data

Sampling Technique

The researchers applied the Systematic Stratified sampling, which divides the

population into groups called strata. The population will be separated into two groups

namely; Group A (selected students that will listen to their preferred genre; Pop, and

selected students that does not prefer the said genre), Group B (selected students that will

listen to their preferred genre; Ballad, and selected students that does not prefer the said

genre).

1.) The students must be from grade 10- Ptolemy (STEM)

The Respondents

The researchers chose forty-six (46) students from 10-Ptolemy

CAPTAIN ALBERT AGUILAR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Junior High School Level
Research Instrument/s

The main tool that the researchers used in this study is the survey questionnaire as

well as the result of the test. The set of survey questionnaire was constructed so that the

specific music in each genre that will be played during the exam could be classified, and

it was made by the researchers. The second tool was used is the result of the test. The test

result states if listening to a preferred genre is effective.

Procedures

In order to conduct the survey within the designated school the researcher

requested permission to the subject teacher of the test that will be observed. For

collecting raw data, the researchers used the test results. This allows the researcher to get

the required data. The researchers asked for permission first before conducting the

survey, playing the music during exam and before recording the test results. The

participants were informed.

To interpret the data effectively and concisely, the researchers first conducted a

survey to determine the specific music in each genre that will be played during the exam.

The exam then occurred and the researchers played the music in each designated groups.

The results was then recorded and computed.

Statistical Treatment

Weighted Mean

This will be used to determine the average mean of the effects of listening to a

preferred music genre of students during an English quiz

Standard Deviation
CAPTAIN ALBERT AGUILAR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

mean average.

Percentage and Frequency

This would be used to normalize the frequency counts and percentage distribution of

personal related variable of the respondents.

f
Formula: %= x 100
N

%is the percentage N is the total number of respondent

f is the frequency 100 is the constant value

Independent T-test

The independent t-test (also called the two sample t-test, or independent-samples

t-test, is an inferential statistical test that determines whether there is a statistically

significant difference between the means in two unrelated groups.

In order to analyze the data statistically the research will use Graph Pad. Graph

Pad is a scientific software that includes portions of the manual for different statistical

treatments.

RESULT, ANALYSIS AND INTERPETATION

This chapter presents the results, the analysis, and the interpretation of the data

gathered from the respondents.

What Are The Effects Of Listening To A Preferred Music Genre Of 10-Ptolemy During

An English Quiz In CAA Nat’l High School-Main

Table 3 illustrates the comparison of the scores each student from different

groups (Listened, Did Not Listened) achieved. The two tailed P value is equivalent to

0.7878 and the mean of the two groups is 0.098.

It can be deduced from the results that listening to a preferred music genre is not

statistically significant. It is provided from the data gathered that the scores from the

group that listened to their preferred music genre (sd=1.191, mean=7.848) did not much

differ from the group that was subjected into listening the music genre they do not prefer

(sd=1.232, mean=7.750)

According to Walworth (2013), listening to a preferred music genre does not

really have a big impact in such doing activities that correlates to focusing and in need of

deep thinking, rather than listening to songs that they prefer, for it is inevitable to have a

song in genre that a certain person does not like. Listening to a song that a person is

really into, which is stated by Walworth (2013) can be a bigger help.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the study conducted by the researcher. This

also contains the conclusions and recommendations based on the findings of the study.

Summary

This study is about effects of listening to a preferred music genre of 10-Ptolemy during

an English quiz, which aimed to solely know if students would listen to their preferred

music genre, would it increase their capability in doing better with their quiz. 45 students

is used as respondents via using the of Odd and Even, and Random sampling technique.

The result is as follow:

1. Listening to a preferred music genre is not statistically significant.

Conclusion

Based from the findings of the study, the following can be conclude:

1. Student listening to the genre they prefer or do not, don't affect their

performance during a test.

Recommendation

On the basis of the findings and conclusions of this study, the researchers

recommend the following:

CAPTAIN ALBERT AGUILAR NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Junior High School Level
1. If teachers really want to help students perform better during an activity that requires

focusing, and engaging the students in their musical well-being as well. They may go for

playing a specific music each student does prefer and not just genre that can consist

hundreds of different songs that the students will not probably fancy.
