Experiment No. 1
COMPARISON BETWEEN THE INCH AND THE CENTIMETER

Name:__________________________________ Score:____________/_____________
Schedule:_______________________________ Date Performed_________________
Group No.______________________________ Date Submitted:________________

I. OBJECTIVE
At the end of the experiment the student is expected to:
1. Determine by process of measurement the relationship between the inch and the
centimeter;
2. Compute the percentage error for length, area, and volume.

II. APPARATUS
 Meter stick/steel tape/ruler with metric and English scales
 Rectangular wooden block

III. PROCEDURE
1. Examine carefully the meter stick or ruler and determine the smallest possible reading in
both scales
2. Measure the length and width of one face of the wooden block, accurate to one-half
millimeter or 1/16 of an inch
3. Record three trials for each measurement
4. Tabulate the results below:

Average Average

5. Compute the average length in both unit of measurement. Determine the relationship
between the cm and the inch by dividing the average length in cm by corresponding
average in inches.
6. Compute the percentage difference using the formula below:

|TV − EV |
Percent Difference = x 100 % , where|TV −EV |is the amount of error .
TV

A. Length
Average Length =____________________cm =________________________inch
Therefore: 1 inch=____________________cm: True Value: 1inch = 2.54 cm
Amount of Error =____________________% Difference =________________%

7. Compute the surface area of the block by using average value of length and width in each
system of measurement. The relationship between the square centimeter and the square
inch can be found by taking the ratio between these area computed.

B. Area

Average Area =_________________sq.cm. =____________________sq. inches

Therefore: 1 sq. inch=____________sq.cm: True Value: 1sq.inch = 6.45 sq.cm
Amount of Error =________________ sq. cm % Difference = =___________%

8. Measure accurately the thickness of the block in both systems of measurement and from
the average values of each system; compute the volume of the wooden block.

Note: The ratio between volume in cubic centimeters and cubic inches will give the
relationship between the cubic centimeters

C. Volume

Average Volume =_________________cu.cm. =____________________cu.in.

Therefore: 1 cu. inch=____________cu.cm: TV: 1cu.inch = 16.39 cu.cm
Amount of Error =________________ sq. cm % Difference = =___________%
