Content

• To what spec should electronics comply?

• What parameters are quality controlled under

the wing today?

• What is reality under the wing today?

• What further opportunities?

2
What specification?

• EI 1598 2nd ed.

• No technology defined
• Performance is described
• For water and dirt

3
Quality parameters today

• Water
• Chemical Water detector
• Dirt
• Millipore
• DP (therefore dirt filtration performance)

5
What is the bigger problem?

• Water
• 15-30 ppm
• Dirt
• 0,5 – 1 mg/l

• That‘s about 2 dimensions difference in

volume

6
Quality parameters today

Tank volume of a A380 is 310.000 l

The checked fuel volume is 0,010 l
Therefore the checked fuel is 0,00000323 %
of the total tank volume
The time
(approx. 3-5 Min)
to do that and
the waste
produced do
add up for all
refuellings

11
What are the next steps?

Ideas:
• Have a quality control the whole process
from refinery to aircraft
• Therefore find sources of problems
and solve the problem at it root cause
• Exchange elements only on performance
(Is water shedding or water absorbing
still okay?)

12
Conclusion

• Free water is the biggest thread to fuel

quality
• In hydrant I may occur at all times
• Free water sensor will give a constant
quality control
• A lot of opportunities ahead for cost saving
and quality improvement
