Definition
Test: Test refers to the tool, instrument or set of questions to measure a dimension, quality or condition, of
a person, object, event.
A test is a tool to evaluate the skill, knowledge, capacities or aptitudes of an individual or a group.

Measurement: Measurement refers to the quantitative form of assessment and also refers to the scores
obtained through test. Measurement is requisite for evaluation in a quantitative form of numbers or scores.

Evaluation: Evaluation is a decision making process which helps to make grading and ranking. It is a
technique by which we come to know at what extent the objectives are been achieved.

Importance of Test, Measurement & Evaluation in Sports

1. To frame the objectives: Test and Measurement helps in setting the target or goal according to the
need and requirement. By adopting the Test and Measurement techniques the physical education
teachers gets an accurate idea about the progress made by the students.
2. To evaluate the learners: In the field of physical education and sports, Test and Measurement helps
in collection of data which further helps in evaluating the learners ability separately. It also helps the
sportsperson in enhancing his sports performance.
3. To evaluate teaching programme: Test and Measurement is a scientific tool which helps the teacher
to adopt correct methodology upon the sportsman so that desired results may be achieved.
4. To discover the needs and requirements of the participants: Needs of the participants are correctly
assessed by the scientific approach of Test and Measurement. It helps in knowing where more
emphasis is needed so that target may be achieved.
5. Evaluates student’s achievements: Student’s achievement can be determined whether he has
reached the goals of the learning tasks or not through test, measurement and evaluation
6. Recognises Nature of difficulties: It diagnosis the nature of difficulties. The weakness of the learner
can be identified through measurement and evaluation particularly with diagnostic test.
7. Motivation: After knowing the results of the achievement test, the student’s interest is increased
especially if he gets a high score. If his score is low, he strives hard to get highest score in the next
examinations
8. Prediction of success: Success and failure of the student is predicted through measurement and
evaluation. For example a student who always gets high scores in all his subjects main show that he
is sure to pass and passing means success.
Calculation of BMI & Waist – Hip Ratio

BMI: Body mass index is used to measure the body composition in the body composition tells us about our
physique.
Formula: BMI is calculated by taking the person's weight (in Kg) and divide by height 2 (in meters).

BMI = Weight (in Kg) / Height x Height (in meter)

BMI Classification
< 18.5 Under weight
18.5–24.9 normal weight
25.0–29.9 Overweight
30.0–34.9 class I obesity
35.0–39.9 class II obesity
≥ 40.0 class III obesity

WHR: Waist Hip Ratio mean the ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of hips.

Formula: A simple calculation of the measurements of the waist girth divided by the hip girth.

WHR = Circumference of the Waist / Circumference of the Buttock

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy WHR is:

• 0.9 or less in men
• 0.85 or less for women

Measurement of health related fitness

Health related physical fitness test for Indian school children between the age group of 9-18 years, developed
by Fit India Mission in 2019.

There are five areas of health related fitness. They are:

1. cardiorespiratory endurance
2. muscular strength
3. muscular endurance
4. flexibility
5. body composition

600mt Run/ Walk (Cardiovascular endurance): The test is recommended to assess cardiovascular endurance
for school children by asking them to run or walk for 600mt and record the time for coving the distance.

Partial Curl Up -30sec (Abdominal/ Core Strength): The curl up test measures abdominal muscular strength
and endurance of the abdominals and hip-Flexors, important in back support and core stability.

Push Up for Boys/Modified Push Up for Girls (Muscular Endurance): Upper body strength and endurance
is tested through the Push-Up test for boys and modified Push-Up for girls.

Sit and Reach Test (Flexibility): is the test for assessment of flexibility of the lower back and hamstring
muscles.

BMI (Body Composition): Body Composition refers primarily to the distribution of muscle and fat in the
body.
