Calamba, Danica G. Ethics (Module 4)

BSBA FM-1D

Activity:

1. I would say yes, we have different perceptions on how we define happiness. Happiness

should be something that comes from within us, that doesn’t require anything to be

activated or for us to feel. Many of us objects happiness as the main purpose of life and

the end goal of life. But in reality, people keeps pursuing happiness and ended up

defining happiness is what makes them pleasurable. We made different things to gratify

ourselves and ended up letting our happiness depend on those things. Happiness is what

makes us contented in life. Reality check, we have a never ending wants and desire, we

weren’t satisfied of what the world can only offer and provide. We seek for happiness

but in reality we only seek for things we can never have. Putting it simply, happiness is

the pursuit of pleasure.

2. Tortures can be justified if it is the only resort to gain and gather information from the

suspected criminals, if it is the only way to save the life of others, and if it is solely for

the betterment of the people within a community, country or the world itself.

3. Not all pleasures are comparable, pleasures have different types of intensity. What

pleasure for us today would never mean that it is the same as it is for tomorrow because

of unending wants and desire.

Module 5

Activity:

1. In my own opinion we can never achieve equality unless everyone is involved

and everyone wants to achieve it. Equality is an admirable goal, but it is

impossible to be achieved if there is single person doesn’t want it. We have

different thoughts and perceptions. Even with twins, they’re not equal and have

independent thoughts. Everybody has born with different talents and abilities, so

how come we could bring equality. Equality is an admirable goal but still not

possible to happen.

2. Common goods pertains to anything that is beneficial and naturally shared by all

members of a certain community. Common good must benefit the people also the

world around you. Since society is important, we must ensure that the benefits are

equally shared and focused on people’s well-being. Goods and resources are

distributed with the existence of the distributor not such person or organization.

Resources should be equally given to everyone.

3. As far as I know individuals makes the state, putting it simply we must prioritize

first the individuals before the state. A state’s constituents—a group of individuals

—must be given priority, when defining and prioritizing demands for civilization

to work over the long term.

Module 6

Activity:

1. Well if it’s in times of war, it’s expected that many soldiers will die. It’ll cause terrible

human losses. Though deciding to launch a bomb would be very beneficial and strategic

plan to win, still launching bomb won’t guarantee anyone that that bomb will only kill

your enemies, it could also your allies and also those innocent people nearby. Although

you’ll lose your chance of winning the war, at least we value the essence of life of others

who shouldn’t be involved in a war.

2. Utilitarianism revolves around the concept of “the end justifies the means,” while

deontology works on the concept “the end does not justify the means.” They’re the

opposite of each other.

3. If it’s according to Kant’s theory, Robin Hood’s action are morally wrong. Kant’s theory

is derived from deontological ethics. Even if the intention was good but the action is

wrong, it is still wrong. From a deontological point of view, Robin Hood’s actions are

unethical as they go against the laws set up by society. If you were to look at it from this

point of view, it doesn’t matter if Robin Hood is stealing from the rich or stealing from

the poor, the consequences doesn’t matter; the concept of “right” or “wrong” is based

purely on whether an action violates the law.
